Maras Flips for His Tournament Life

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

John Maras opened with a raise, how much we're not quite sure, and Robbie Kent responded by three-betting all in for 41,000. Action folded back to Maras, who had slightly less than that, and he called off.

Kent: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Maras: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

It was a flop, and Maras was just looking to hold. That proved easier said than done though as the {k-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop gave Kent top two. Neither the {10-Diamonds} turn nor {7-Hearts} river helped Maras, and he was eliminated in the penultimate level of Day 1b.

Wayne's World

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

A short-stacked player shoved his last 25,000 from middle position and Wayne Sahl, who barely had him covered, called. The rest of the players folded and the cards were turned up.

Sahl: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Opponent: {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Sahl was ahead, and he maintained it as the board ran out a clean {3-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}. With that, Sahl is up to 65,000.

2001 WSOP Finalist Schrier Sails Off Into the Sunset

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Stanley Schrier
Stanley Schrier

Back in 2001, Omaha's Stanley Schrier finished third in the World Series of Poker Main Event. It was a feat that earned him $699,315, and was especially impressive considering the finalist in the field of 613.

If you recall, that was the year Spain's Carlos Mortensen defeated Dewey Tomko in heads-up play to win the $1.5 million first-place prize. Also at that final table were Phil Gordon (4th - $399,610), Phil Hellmuth (5th - $303,705), and Mike Matusow (6th - $239,765), while another future superstar barely missed out in Daniel Negreanu, who finished 11th for $63,940.

When "Kid Poker" learned Schrier was playing today, he was quick to point out that was the year he finished 11th despite being the chip leader with 12 left:

Schrier, who will turn 80 this year, was firing is one and only bullet on Day 1b, but unfortunately it just came to an end. He got his last 20,000 or so all in preflop holding the {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} only to run into a player holding the {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. The board ran out {k-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and Schrier hit the rail. Schrier won't return this evening, but he did say he'll be making the trip to Vegas this summer and is looking forward to playing the Super Seniors Event at the WSOP.

Hebda on a Heater

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 300 ante
Joe Hebda
Joe Hebda

RunGood Ambassador Joe Hebda caught fire in Level 10.

First, he won a massive pot when both he and another big stack clashed on a {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} flop. There was already 14,000 in the pot when a raising war broke out that saw Hebda's opponent get his stack of 40,000 or so all in.

Hebda: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {j-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Hebda was well out in front with his cowboys, and he took down the pot after the {7-Hearts} blanked on the turn followed by the {8-Spades} on the river.

Not long after, Hebda opened for 3,300 only to have fellow RunGood Ambassador Bryan Campanello three-bet all in for 43,000. Action folded back to Hebda and he made the call.

Hebda: {j-}{j-}
Campanello: {a-}{q-}

It was a flip, but the proverbial coin would not come down in Campanello's favor as the board ran out a dry {k-}{7-}{6-}{k-}{9-}. Hebda closed in on 200K with that pot, while Campanello has to wait until the Day 1c flight in 90 minutes to try again.

Almerli Takes the Long, Lonely Walk of Loneliness

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 300 ante
Dan Almerli
Dan Almerli

Dan Almerli was nursing a short stack most of the afternoon, but then a rush of cards saw his stack go from under 10,000 to six times that amount. Unfortunately for him, as quickly as the cards turned in his favor they reversed their tracks.

We missed his elimination, but Almerli told us he became involved in a big three-way hand holding pocket nines. His opponents held jacks and tens respectively, and when all was said and done Almerli found himself without a chip to his name.

WSOP Bracelet Winner Enters the Field

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 300 ante

RunGood Ambassador and World Series of Poker bracelet winner Bryan Campanello entered the field right before the close of registration. Since then he's been stacking chips.

Most recently, Campanello got his stack all in on a {9-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop holding the {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} against an opponent who held {a-}{q-}. The {4-Spades} turn and {9-Hearts} river gave Campanello the double, and he is already up to 55,000.
