Lingenfelder Takes Overall Lead After Day 1c at the SunBet Poker Tour Time Square Main Event

Level 14 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Benjamin "Guppie" Lingenfelder

The late registration for the 2024 SunBet Poker Tour Time Square Main Event has concluded at the Time Square Casino on the outskirts of Pretoria and the marquee event of the live poker series surpassed the ZAR5,000,000 guarantee thanks to the busy two final starting days.

Day 1c gathered the strongest turnout with 155 entries of which 24 players advanced while the turbo heat 1d drew another 85 entries. This boosted the overall field size to 418 total entries in the ZAR15,000 (~$790) buy-in to generate a prize pool of ZAR5,266,800 ($281,989). The top 53 spots will get paid and the money bubble will dominate the early stages of Day 2.

A new overall chip leader has been crowned and further notables punched their seats for the penultimate tournament day, on which the money stages will be reached. The top spot of Benjamin "Guppie" Lingenfelder comes under very unique circumstances, as his father Bennie Lingenfelder - a well-known member of the close-knit South African poker community - passed away just a few days ago on March 5, 2024 while the series was already underway. During the first break of the three Main Event starting days so far, all players observed a minute of silence in his honour.

"My dad would have wanted me to play this event," Lingenfelder had mentioned and he bagged up 614,000 chips. Only Elai Mazor came close to that amount on Day 1c and advanced with 592,000 while Danny Dayani claimed the final spot on the podium for Day 1c with 455,000.

Besides Mazor, Stephen Courtney finished the live stream table session on a high-note to claim 450,000 to his name while other notables such as Menesh Keshav (368,000) and Kinesh Pather (248,000) also earned top ten stacks. Sugen Singh claimed 425,000 to his name and was responsible for the final elimination of the night on Day 1c when his ace-queen beat the ace-king of Lagen Zackey in a preflop contest.

Zackey's father Warren, who finished 22nd in the 2009 WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas, was also among the late casualties as well when his short-stacked shove with eight-five suited had zero equity against Pather's big slick as of the flop.

Other notables who came up short in the penultimate starting day were Jon Per Persent, Greg Tucker, Rayhaan Adam, Ronit Chamani and Shannon Elizabeth. The latter was trying to improve upon her 114,000 stack from Day 1a as the bigger stack will be carried forward, but she first lost a big pot on the live stream table to then succumb with a short stack against Mathew Ord-Hume soon after.

Day 1c Concludes With Two Quick Eliminations

Level 14 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Lagen Zackey
Lagen Zackey

Tony van Eeden ran with pocket tens into the pocket kings of Menesh Keshav and that brought the field down to the last 25 hopefuls. One more elimination was required to end Day 1c and it would follow moments later on the other outer table.

Kinesh Pather raised to 12,000 and Sugen Singh in the small blind three-bet to 38,000. Lagen Zackey then four-bet jammed for the last 99,000 in the big blind and Pather asked for a count. He then folded while Singh reluctantly called.

Lagen Zackey: AK
Sugen Singh: AQ

The dominated ace paired up on the QJ7 flop, then stayed ahead on the 4 turn and 9 river to eliminate Zackey one spot away from making Day 2.

Elizabeth Eliminated but Will Return for Day 2

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Shannon Elizabeth
Shannon Elizabeth

Shannon Elizabeth had defended her big blind off a short stack and flopped second pair on 1074 with the Q7. However, the KQ of Mathew OrdHume got there when the board completed with the 4 turn and 8 river to end her run.

She can still enter Day 1d but also has chips from Day 1a at her disposal. The attempt to run up a bigger stack was however not successful.

Matthews Busts in a "Wild Hand"

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante

Stephen Courtney raised to 6,000 from an early position and was called by Brandon Matthews on the button as well as Teren Ramnundlall in the big blind. The flop brought J86 and Ramnundlall bet 12,000 first to act. Courtney raised to 25,000 only for Matthews to then jam for 78,000.

Ramnundlall folded and Courtney used three time bank extensions before he made the call.

Brandon Matthews: AK All in
Stephen Courtney: 1010

Matthews was behind but had all spades as well as aces and kings at his disposal. The 5 turn and Q river were blanks, as Courtney jumped out of his chair in relief with a "thank you, thank you".

Ahmed Karrim then confirmed all the details and added "you missed a wild hand".

Fabio Cornelli
Fabio Cornelli

On the J9610 turn, SM fired a bet of 30,000 out of the blinds and Fabio Cornelli moved all-in to get snap-called.

"You have it, eh?" Cornelli asked and was shown the 1010 by SM. The set of tens had one hundred percent already, as Cornelli's AJ had zero outs anymore as the blank 4 river ended his run.

Mazor Sends Kossew and Ioannoy Packing

Nic Ioannoy
Nic Ioannoy

Jedd Kossew raised to 3,500 and Nic Ioannoy called. Elai Mazor then three-bet to 14,500 on the button only for Kossew and Ioannoy to move all-in. Mazor asked for the stack size of Ioannoy's bigger shove, which happened to be for 53,300, and Mazor then called.

Jedd Kossew: JJ All in
Nic Ioannoy: 108 All in
Elai Mazor: AQ

"I like your hand ... I gonna need one of them," Ioannoy told Kossew.

The Q62 flop vaulted Mazor into the lead, which he retained throughout the 10 turn and 2 river to knock out two players.

"You told me you were gonna get me," Ioannoy told Mazor, who nodded while raking in the chips.

Taliwanth No More; Mazor and SM Thrive

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
SM
SM

Elai Mazor rivered a superior flush with KJ versus 76 on a board of 33274 to knock out an opponent before Nic Ioannoy then arrived and instantly got his 40,000 stack in preflop. Cliton Taliwanth called with the marginally covering stack and they flipped.

Nic Ioannoy: KQ All in
Cliton Taliwanth: JJ

"I have the same hand as yesterday when I busted you ..." Taliwanth joked and Ioannoy replied "ah, when you rivered the nine".

It was a classic flip and Ioannoy got there with the AK6102 runout.

Taliwanth was down to a mere 8,000 and all-in shortly after with the 55. Another short stack was involved with the K8 and SM jammed over the top to isolate both with the AK.

The current chip leader smashed the 722A4 runout to send two opponents packing.

It's All About SM Right Now

Level 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Marriette Language
Marriette Language

SM raised to 2,400 and Maverick Zackey called on the button, as did the big blind. On a K86 flop, the big blind check-folded when SM bet 5,000 and Zackey called. They headed to the 9 turn on which SM bet another 25,000 and Zackey called after using one time bank.

That led to the 4 river on which SM jammed. Zackey quickly called and was shown the AA.

"That's fucked up, " Maverick gritted as he briefly flashed the cards to the table and departed.

One hand later, SM raised the very same amount and Vishal Ghoorbin called one seat over. One further player came along before Marriette Language got her last 6,000 in out of the big blind without checking at her cards. SM reraised to 20,000 and isolated successfully.

SM tabled his KQ and Language joked "is that all?" before she turned over her cards: 43! "Oh, I have a chance," she joked.

Neither player connected with the A86J6 board and SM scored the second knockout in a row.
