Chip Leaders Battle

Level 14 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
William Givens
William Givens

William Givens just took round one in what will surely be the first of many battles between two of the largest stacks in the room seated next to each other.

He opened for 15,000 when action folded to his small blind, and Kou Vang defended. On the {5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop, Givens bet 14,000 and Vang called. A {9-Diamonds} hit the turn, and Givens continued his aggression with 32,000. Again, Vang called. When a {k-Clubs} fell, Givens fired 70,000 and Vang immediately announced a call.

Givens showed {k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} for two pair, and he dragged the hefty pot.

"Now I Know You're Not Calling, I Better Bet Less"

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Blake Bohn raised to 20,000 from the button after a player limped in early position.

"Fold, it's a lot," he said.

"That's what I wanted you to do," the limper responded as he called.

Both players checked until fifth street, when the board read {4-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. The first player checked, and Bohn reached for his stack. His opponent responded by reaching for his own.

"Now I know you're not calling, I better bet less," Bohn said. He bet 25,000.

"I can't beat anything but a bluff," Bohn's opponent said. After some thought, he called.

Bohn tabled {j-Spades}{2-Spades} for trip jacks, and his opponent mucked {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} face up.

Vang Eliminates York and Sandness in Three-Way All In

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Kou Vang may be the chip leader now.
Kou Vang may be the chip leader now.

Mark Sandness open shoved from middle position for 79,000, and action folded to Kou Vang's small blind. He moved all in as well, and Colin York called off his stack out of the big blind.

York: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Sandness: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Vang: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The flop came {6-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{5-Clubs}, no help to anybody besides Vang since all three players whiffed. The {9-Diamonds} turn gave Vang a set and meant only York was drawing live with diamonds. A black card arrived though: the {8-Clubs}, and Vang sent both of his opponents to the rail.

Level 12 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Patrick Steele
Patrick Steele

Patrick Steele came into the day with a below average stack, but he has turned things around early on.

In a recent pot, he three-bet to 31,500 after a middle-position player opened to what looked like 12,000. The player called, and a {6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs} hit the board. Steele fired 35,000 and watch his opponent tank for three or four minutes before folding.

Players are now on a 10-minute break.

Campbell Picks Off Yazdi

Level 12 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

Michael Campbell opened for 7,500 in the cutoff and got called by the button and the small blind. He then continuation-bet 13,000 on the {7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop, and only Reza Yazdi on the button continued. A {6-Hearts} turn put a four-straight on board and led to two checks, and a {2-Clubs} hit the river. Campbell checked, and Yazdi bet 35,000. Campbell thought briefly before calling.

Yazdi shook his head and showed {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, while Campbell had a better pair with {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}.

Gioia Staying Hot

Level 12 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Gene Gioia hasn't slowed down.
Gene Gioia hasn't slowed down.

The two days off haven't cooled off Gene Gioia yet, as he's still dragging pots. In a recent hand, Kelly Whitlock bet 12,500 from the cutoff on a {9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop after one check, and Gioia called on the button. The small blind folded, and Whitlock bet 17,000 on the {q-Spades} turn. Gioia called once more, and a {10-Spades} finished out the community. Whitlock check-called 25,000 from Gioia, and he showed {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for trips on the river. Whitlock turned over {q-Hearts} as she mucked, showing she'd been outdrawn.
