Loehr Among Leaders

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

We found Eric Loehr all in on a board of {7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}, putting an opponent who had about 22,000 at risk. The pot was massive, containing at least 30,000 already, and Loehr's opponent agonized for a few minutes, apologizing to the table before eventally folding.

Loehr didn't show, but the Minnesota native has one of the heftier stacks in the early going.

Hudson Busts Kuznia With Vicious Cooler

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

According to Brett Kuznia, he three-bet to 2,500 after one player raised to 800 and got one caller. Only Mario Hudson came along, and both players checked a flop of {a-}{7-}{7-Clubs}. After a {9-Clubs} turn and {j-Clubs} river, Kuznia said the two eventually got it all in after a min-bet by Hudson, and Kuznia showed what he thought was a sure winner with {j-}{j-} for a full house. Unfortunately for him, Hudson had gone runner-runner straight flush with {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, busting Kuznia.

Root Turns a Straight

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

We didn't see the action, but three players had cards on their backs at Table 38 when we arrived, with the board having come {8-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. Jason Root had {7-Spades}{6-Hearts} in front of him for a nine-high straight, while Gennady Shimelfarb's {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} for a set had been outdrawn on the turn. A third player had {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for top pair.

Liu's Straight Takes It

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

Three players checked to the button on a flop of {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}, and the player there bet 1,200. Everyone called except Peixin Liu, who could have closed the action with a call but raised to 2,800. The bettor folded, and the other two players called. On the {5-Hearts} turn, Liu bet 2,800 again when checked to, and only the small blind called. Action went check-check on the {10-Spades} river, and Liu turned over {k-Spades}{9-Spades} for a straight.

Liu has found great success at Mid-States Poker Tour running aces, having notched a second-place finish for $51,401 in early 2013 and then following up with a fourth-place score for $22,297 in the first event of this year.

Kirby Check-Ships

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Jim Lawrence and Matt Kirby checked out of the blinds on a board of {10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{5-Spades}{7-Spades}, and a player in middle position bet 1,300. Both blinds called, and a {5-Hearts} finished out the board. The blinds checked once more, and the middle player bet what looked like 1,625. Lawrence quickly folded, but Kirby indicated he wanted to see his opponent's stack. Seeing it was 5,025 more, Kirby put the player all in, and he folded without much thought.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Mychal Sheridan
Mychal Sheridan

A player in the small blind put his last 10,225 in the pot on the end, with the board having come {10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Mychal Sheridan was considering his choices from early position when we got to the table, and he sighed and said he was calling.

"It's yours," the small blind said with disappointment, showing {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}.

Sheridan showed {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} for a king-high flush.
