Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Maryland Live! Casino

MSPT Maryland Live!
MSPT Maryland Live!

Day 1a is in the books, and the second of three flights at Mid-States Poker Tour Maryland Live! Casino kicks off in less than an hour here on the outskirts of Baltimore.

The first flight saw some notables bag up, including chip leader Mo Mostafa (238,900), MSPT team pro Blake Bohn (142,600), and Christian Harder (104,500). Some of the players failing to advance included Blake's fellow tour pro Matt Alexander, Adam Friedman, WSOPC ring winner Jeromy Bittan, and MSPT points leader Mark Hodge. We can expect all four of those and more to return for another crack at this growing prize pool.

The plan for the day is to play 14 levels, each lasting 40 minutes as part of the Allen Kessler-approved structure. There will be breaks every three levels, and with play kicking off at 11:15 a.m., things should wrap up just after 9 p.m. local time. Each player begins with 20,000 in their stack, and blinds start off at 50/100.

"I'm Not Good Enough to Fold"

Matt Alexander

Matt Alexander bet 1,200 from early position on a {7-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} board against two opponents, one of whom quickly folded. Stan Jablonski made it 3,200 from the big blind though, and Alexander called. The river brought a {10-Spades}, and Jablonski bet 6,500.

"I'm not good enough to fold a straight," Alexander said with a smile, tossing out a call and showing {a-Diamonds}{4-Spades}.

"I was counting on you being good enough to fold," Jablonski said with a laugh, showing {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. "I was going for the other end."

Hodge Busts Jablonski

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

Mark Hodge, pictured at MSPT Golden Gates.

We found Stan Jablonski and Mark Hodge both all in on a {j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop, with Jablonski at risk for about 9,500. A third player was thinking things over but decided to fold, and Hodge turned up {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, well ahead of Jablonski's {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}. An {a-Clubs} turn ended the drama right away.

Jablonski headed to the registration desk to reenter.

Ho Puts a Beat on Friedman

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Huan Ho opened for 650 in the hijack, and Adam Friedman three-bet to 1,400 on his left. Ho came back with 4,500, and Friedman splashed in an exaggerated call. Ho bet 7,000 on the {7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop, and Friedman called. Ho continued his aggression with 17,000 on the {3-Diamonds} turn, and Friedman counted out his stack and thought for a couple of minutes before moving in for about 10,000 more. Ho asked for a count of the raise.

"That's no pair," Friedman said with a smile.

He was right, but Ho called anyway with the {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}, and his draw was live as Friedman had {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. The river brought a {6-Diamonds}, giving Ho a flush.

"I knew I had the best hand," Friedman said before heading to the registration desk to reenter.

Hodge Doubles Up

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

Mark Hodge bet 6,500 from the small blind on an {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} board, and his opponent on the button called. Hodge checked the {2-Clubs} river, and his opponent asked how much he had. It looked to be about 21,000, and the player said he was all in. Hodge leaned back and asked for a count, and the shove covered him. He slid forward his stack about a minute later.

"Ace-high," Hodge's opponent said softly. Hodge indicated he wanted to see, and the player showed {a-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. Hodge showed {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and took the pot with top two.

Alexander Takes a Hit as Jacobini Stacks Up

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Matt Alexander
Matt Alexander

Three players got it all in on a {4-Spades}{a-Spades}{j-Diamonds} flop, with Mid-States Poker Tour Team Pro Matt Alexander covering both of his opponents.

Alexander: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Billy Jacobini: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}
Third player: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Top two was the best hand for the moment, but Jacobini grabbed a big lead when he nailed a flush on the {9-Spades} turn. The {8-Hearts} river changed nothing, and Jacobini had 29,200. That was enough to cover the player who flopped two pair, and Alexander shipped the requisite amount to his right.

Bond Doubles Through Zekus

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Nick Bond
Nick Bond

Brian Zekus opened for 4,000 under the gun and got a call from his left. Action folded to Nick Bond, who made it 11,000 on the button. Zekus said he was all in, and Bond snap-called and tabled two queens. The only problem was, the third player had yet to act. He folded, and Zekus showed {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. He was dead by the turn on the {6-Spades}{2-Spades}{k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{3-Hearts} board, and Bond took his new chips and his short penalty.

Friedman Bags Huge Lead on Day 1b

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

World Series of Poker bracelet winner Adam Friedman busted a bullet early on, but he didn't let that deter him, ultimately bagging 285,600 in chips to take the overall lead in the Mid-States Poker Tour Maryland Live! Casino Main Event. He finished with about 50,000 more than Day 1a leader Mo Mostafa and will have more than 150 big binds when Day 2 commences on Sunday.

Notable East Coast grinder and Maryland native Justin Liberto (176,400) finished the day in second place. Others who were among the 14 Day 1b survivors included MSPT Team Pro Matt Alexander (145,600), Nick Bond (127,700), Avon Wilson (118,200), Billy Jacobini (113,100), Joe Cashen (100,900), and Brian Zekus (33,400). The flight drew 78 players total.

Friedman got cut to piece by the Huan Ho buzzsaw on his first bullet, making a call for his stack on the turn in a four-bet pot. With about 23,000 in the middle, Ho bet 17,000 on a {7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} board from the cutoff seat, and Friedman put in his whole stack of about 27,000 in after thinking things over for a couple of minutes.

"That's no pair," Friedman said with a smile when Ho didn't immediately call, asking for a count instead. He was right, as Ho called with the {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds} but found the {6-Diamonds} on the river to bust a disappointed Friedman, who held the {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}.

The Ohio native hopped right back in and quickly ran up a stack, partially courtesy of MSPT points leader Mark Hodge. First, Friedman got three streets of value with a flush draw that turned into top pair. Then, he got it in on a {10-Spades}{7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{q-Clubs} board with {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, dominating Hodge's {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. Friedman continued to chip up from there, hitting a combo draw all in on the turn for stacks to bust one player and then having another opponent call off on the river against his aces up.

Players who fired and missed included MSPT Pro Nick Pupillo, Stan Jablonski, Greg Davis, and Jordan Hogans. They'll have one last chance to qualify for championship Sunday as Day 1c begins Saturday at 11:15 a.m. local time. Players who advance from there will join the 28 players who have thus far made it through to Sunday.
