Day 1b of the MSPT Iowa State Poker Championship Main Event has come to a close and surviving players have bagged up until Sunday's Day 2 restart. Iowa's own Randy Perkins put the most chips in his bag with an impressive 445,000.

A total of 316 entrants fired today's flight. For the second night in a row, players made it down to 12 percent of the field before reaching the end of level 15, so 37 players will move on to Sunday's Day 2 and resume play at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Early on in the day, Perkins went on a heater to build an early stack. He flopped a set against pocket aces to cross the 100,000 mark and never looked back.

CJ Peake was one player unable to find a bag, despite doubling his stack in the first few hands of play. Other players left without a bag were Mitchell Bank, Craig Casino, Gary Herstein, Andy Rogowski, Steve Vang, and Rob Wazwaz. Bank went out late in the day for the second flight in a row after a late-night cooler left him short-stacked.

Sarah Stefan (312,000), Elizabeth Ethridge (269,000), and Angela Jordison (254,000) all found big-stack bags. Stefan scored a big double knockout about halfway through the day and rode that momentum to a top-ten stack.

Players will return on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and join the players from the other two flights.

That does it for today's coverage. PokerNews will be on hand the rest of the weekend to follow this one to what is sure to be an exciting conclusion.

Level 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Jeff Fielder
Jeff Fielder

David McKim raised from under the gun and found four callers to head to a flop in a swelling pot.

The dealer flopped {j-Hearts}{k-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and McKim continued with a bet of 35,000. Just on his left, a player moved all in for 76,000. Action folded to Jeff Fielder on the button who also moved all in, his stack at 95,000.

McKim didn't seem to love it, but he did make the call.

Opponent: {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Jeff Fielder: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}
David McKim:{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Fielder had his opponents right where he wanted them. The board ran out clean with no drama and Fielder scooped it all to jump into a top spot on the leaderboard.

David McKim
David McKim

Action picked up on the river of a large pot between David McKim and Mitchell Bank. The full board showed {3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades}{k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}.

McKim moved all in on the river and had just barely less than Bank. Bank made the call to see the terrible news.

McKim showed {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} for the rivered full house and Bank revealed {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} for top pair down the drain.

"Are you kidding me? Again?" a distraught Bank said.

Scotter Clark
Scotter Clark

Action picked up on the turn in a heads-up pot. The board showed {9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}.

Ryan Phan bet out 15,000 from the blinds, and in late position, Scotter Clark made the call.

The river fell the {3-Diamonds} and Phan moved all in, enough to cover the stack of about 80,000 that Clark had behind.

"Just picking on the short stack, aren't you," Clark said out loud. After thinking for about a minute, Clark flicked in a chip for a call.

"You're good," said Phan as he showed {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}.

Clark turned over {k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for top pair that he held on with to score the double.

Stefan Takes Two Out, Catapults Near Top of the Leaderboard

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Sarah Stefan
Sarah Stefan

A player in early position moved all in for 19,500 and action folded to Sarah Stefan. She three-bet up to 50,000 in middle position. Everyone folded until action was on the big blind. He thought about it for a while, but decided to go with his hand for slightly less than the 50,000.

Early position: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}
Big blind: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Sarah Stefan: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

With three aces out there, it was battle of the kickers and Stefan's was best.

The flop hit no one when the {5-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{10-Clubs} came out. The turn drilled the shortest stack when the {3-Spades} hit. Stefan came back on the river when the {k-Spades} fell, giving her the best hand and sending two to the rail.

Opponent: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Angela Jordison: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

No ace came on the flop {10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{j-Spades}, but Jordison now had to dodge a king as well. The turn was the {9-Diamonds}, adding chop outs to the list. The river was the final queen, the {q-Clubs}, to give Jordison the set and the knockout.

Marshall Lagani
Marshall Lagani

Action started on the river in a heads-up pot with about 40,000 in the middle. The board read {8-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}.

The player in the small blind led for 15,000. Marshall Lagani was under the gun and announced, "Raise...I guess I'm all in." The total bet was 49,500.

His opponent started talking. "Do you really have ace-king here?" he asked out loud. After about two minutes, he did make the call.

"Nuts," said Lagani, as he showed {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} for quads.

"Nice hand," said his opponent as Lagani stacked chips.

Morrow Wins Back-to-Back Pots

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Albert Morrow
Albert Morrow

Action was found in a heads-up pot with Albert Morrow putting the pressure on his opponent. The flop read {6-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades} on the turn.

With about 25,000 in the pot, Morrow was in position on his opponent and moved all in. He had his opponent covered and the bet was for about 40,000 effective.

His opponent thought for about two minutes before letting out a yell of agony and folded his cards face up, showing {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

*****

The next hand played saw an early position raise to 4,000 and four players made the call, including Morrow in middle position.

The flop this time was {3-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{6-Spades}. The small blind led out for 19,000, all in, about a pot-sized bet. Everyone folded to Morrow who made the call fairly quickly after getting a count.

Small blind: {k-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Albert Morrow: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Morrow was in good shape with top pair against bottom pair. The {q-Clubs} turn did give his opponent a flush draw, but the {8-Hearts} river didn't complete it and Morrow took down the pot.

Garrett Can Beat Bullets

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Larry Garrett
Larry Garrett

In a blind versus blind battle, Larry Garrett sat in the big blind looking at a board of {9-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{j-Spades}{2-Spades}.

With about 20,000 in the pot, Garrett moved all in for 33,700. After quite a bit of thinking, his opponent in the small blind made the call and Garrett was at risk.

Larry Garrett: {j-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Small blind: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Garrett had two pair, but his opponent seemed to think he was ahead. The {3-Hearts} hit the river to improve Garrett to a flush, causing his opponent to throw his hands up in disgust. Once the small blind realized he was behind, he was a little more understanding.

"Nice hand, I should have raised preflop," he said.

Rawlings Bets Big, Gets Away With It

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Dennis Rawlings
Dennis Rawlings

Dennis Rawlings was heads up and in the big blind against a player in middle position with about 10,000 in the pot.

The flop of {k-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Spades} had just hit the board and Rawlings led from the big blind for 40,600. His opponent was thoroughly confused. After some thinking, he decided against the call that would have been about half of his stack.

"It's just not worth it," he said.

The table encouraged Rawlings to show, and he obliged by showing {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}.

"Nice bet, you weren't ahead," said his opponent. "I had ace-king."

EIther way, Rawlings took this one down and added to his stack to prepare for even bigger bets next time.
