Lapossie Leads Day 1a; Cheong Advances with Top 5 Stack

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Matthew Lapossie - Day 1a Chip Lead
Matthew Lapossie - Day 1a Chip Lead

On Friday, Day 1a of the River Poker Series Main Event kicked off at WinStar World Casino and Resort. This $2,500,000 guaranteed prize pool event saw a grand total of 366 entires on its first starting flight. The field played down to the top 10%, or 37 players on Day 1a, resulting in a 15-hour day of poker. At the end of the day, it was Matthew Lapossie who led the tournament field, bagging up 658,000 in chips.

With just 10% of the starting field remaining, this means that each returning player is guaranteed a payday. The amount, however, will remain undetermined until registration for the tournament closes on Day 1c.

Lapossie jumped out to a huge chip lead just after the dinner break when he eliminated three other players in one hand. Lapossie held pocket queens to do the deed and after that moment commanded the largest stack in the room by a mile. He rode that momentum through the rest of the day and finished on top.

Right on Lapossie's heels, however, was Austin Lewis with 652,000. Lewis is having a stellar month, coming fresh off a victory in the CardPlayer Poker Tour Choctaw Main Event where he pocketed over $183,000 in prize money. He's guaranteed another payday with a good shot at another deep run here.

Quite possibly the most notable player to advance to Day 2 is 2010 World Series of Poker November Niner Joseph Cheong. Cheong had a roller coaster of a day, busting one bullet very early in the day. On his second bullet, he found himself short early once more, with our Live Reporting team spotting him as low as 8,000. He worked his magic and built that stack up as the day progressed, and ultimately put 511,000 in the bag. With this many chips in Cheong's arsenal, he'll certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the later stages of the tournament.

Other notable players to bag up at the end of Day 1a include Lynn Samples (401,500), Scott Clements (386,000), Pete Kaemmerlen (327,000), Jonathan Gaviao (310,000), 2012 River Poker Series Main Event runner-up Andy Robinson (204,500), Arthur Morris (126,500), Rep Porter (122,000), and Christian Harder (62,000).

While these players all advanced onto Day 2 and are guaranteed a payday, others came out and fell before the final hand of the day was dealt. Some of those to fall on Day 1a include Bryan Campanello, TJ Cloutier, Clint Tolbert, David "ODB" Baker, Allen Kessler, Noah Vaillancourt, Kyle Bowker, Kevin Saul, Ari Engel, David Tuthill, and WinStar poker ambassador Maria Ho. All of these players are likely to return to the felt on later starting flights to try their hands once again.

Play for Day 1b kicks off on Saturday at 12 p.m. local time. Players should expect a long day of poker as the 1b field will once again be whittled down to the top 10%. PokerNews will be on hand with all of the latest updates from the tournament floor.

Lapossie Felts Three in One Hand

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Matthew Lapossie
Matthew Lapossie

We didn't catch the hand but saw Cord Garcia walking away from his table yelling "showers" to a friend. When we arrived, Matthew Lapossie was stacking a massive pot to add to his already overwhelming chip lead. We asked Lapossie what happened and he said that it started out with a player moving all in for approximately 15 big blinds with {7-}{7-}. The player after him also moved all in with {10-}{10-}. Then there was yet another all in, this time the player held {A-Spades}{K-Spades}. The action was on Lapossie who had all three covered and he made the call with {Q-}{Q-}.

The board was a good one for Lapossie was it came {Q-Spades}{10-}{3-Spades} to give him top set. He would still have to fade the flush and straight draw the player holding {A-Spades}{K-Spades} had though if he were to win the pot. The turn was the {6-} and the river would come the {K-Clubs} and Lapossie would eliminate the other three with his set of queens. His stack was at an impressive 340,000 — which leads the field by a large margin at this stage of the tournament.

"That was one of the more interesting hands I've ever dealt," said the dealer as Lapossie could only shake his head in disbelief along with the rest of the table.

Lapossie recently took 7th place at the Little One for One Drop tournament at the World Series of Poker and would love to top that performance with a deep run here. He's certainly in position to do just that so far.

Massey Scores Knockout with Top Two

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Aaron Massey
Aaron Massey

Aaron Massey and an opponent took a flop of {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}{9-Diamonds} in a raised pot. Massey was first to act and led out for 900. His opponent instantly raised the action to 6,000 and Massey quickly called.

The turn was the {8-Hearts} and Massey flung out a single orange T5,000 chip. His opponent responded with a raise all in for approximately 28,000, prompting Massey to look back down at his cards.

"Set of nines?" he said out loud before announcing a call.

Massey: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}
Opponent: {K-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Massey's top two pair were in a commanding lead and he scored the knockout after the {10-Clubs} completed the board. The 2012 River Poker Series Main Event champion now has roughly 82,000 just over halfway through Level 6.

Baker Scores Double KO; Flirts With 100K

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
David "ODB" Baker
David "ODB" Baker

David "ODB" Baker has just scooped a massive pot that gave him what is certain to be the largest stack in the room at the moment. We arrived as the last of the money went in on the flop, but Baker was kind enough to recap the action.

Four players took a flop of of {K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Action checked around to the original preflop raiser who continued for 1,550. A player called and Baker made it 4,500 to go. One of the original checkers raised all in for 10,200 and the preflop raiser called. Action folded back to Baker who moved all in over the top. The preflop raiser contemplated for some time before calling for roughly 26,000 more. Baker had both of his opponents covered with two community cards to come.

Baker: {K-Spades}{9-Spades}
Preflop Raiser: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}
Opponent: {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Baker's top two pair were in the lead but both of his opponents were drawing live for their tournament lives. Fortunately for ODB, the turn and river bricked out for his opponents with the {7-Hearts} and the {6-Spades}. Baker's two pair held up and he scored the double knockout, bringing his stack to right around 95,000.

Steven Doubles Early

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Brandon Steven
Brandon Steven

We arrived in time to see Dan "Wretchy" Martin and Brandon Steven involved in a hand on a flop of {5-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{A-Diamonds}. Martin led out and Steven came over the top with a raise. Martin three-bet to 4,750 only to have Steven ship all in over the top for what looked to be just under 20,000. Martin called and the hands were turned over.

Martin: {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Steven: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Both players flopped sets but Steven's jacks trumped the fives. The board finished with the {4-Spades} and the {K-Clubs}, allowing Steven's set to secure him a double up. He scooped the pot and brought his stack up to around 45,000. Martin, on the other hand, was left with just about 4,800. He was eliminated from play soon after.
