"Quinze minutes," came the announcement, prompting players from their seats. That's 15 minutes to enjoy the first break of the day.
Jean-Jacques Mars paused a moment to reposition the large unlit cigar in the corner of his mouth, then pushed out an opening raise from middle position. It folded to the button who raised, and both blinds got out. Mars put out a four-bet, and when his opponent promptly pushed all in, Mars immediately shrugged and gave it up.
Mars showed his hand -- -- as he folded, and his opponent returned the gesture, turning over his
. Mars preserves his stack of 22,000 as we near the end of Level 2 and the day's first break.
With about 5,300 in the pot and the board reading , two players checked to Dominik Nitsche and he promply bet 2,800 from the button. One of his opponents came along to see the
turn card.
Both opted to check and did so once again when the river card hit. Nitsche turned over
, better than his opponent's holdings to increase his stack to about 35,000.
After a couple of players limped, a player in late position raised to 500. Both the cutoff and button called, as did French businessman Guillaume Darcourt -- winner of this year's WPT event in Bucharest, Romania -- in the big blind. The two limpers called as well, meaning a half-dozen players, then, saw the flop come . All folded to the cutoff who bet 725, and only Darcourt made the call.
The turn brought the and checks from both players. The river was the
. Darcourt pushed out a bet of 2,350, and when his opponent called he immediately mucked his hand. His opponent showed
for an ace and the two pairs on board, and scooped the pot.
Darcourt slips under 12,000 on that one.
Marvin Rettenmaier raised under-the-gun to 375, and the next player to act flat called. Then Ronan Collet bumped it up to 1,425. Pierre Canali wasn't about to let his button go without a fight. He four-bet to 3,725. Rettenmaier and the flat-caller quickly folded, and after a minute, Collet called Canali's raise.
The flop fell , and Collet bet out 3,400. Canali quickly called. After the
on the turn, Collet fired 8,500. Canali didn't like it. He spent several minutes sighing and grimacing. Another player at the table took a call on his cell phone and proceeded to chat away for the rest of the hand. Eventually, Canali found a fold, slipping to around 20,000. Collet, on the other hand, is looking healthy with around 43,000.
Having slipped to about 22,000 during Level 2, Alex Gomes has gained a little back. Seeing a raise to 450 and a call in front of him, Gomes re-raised to 1,700 in middle position. The table folded around to the original caller and he came along.
The flop was checked by both, landing the
on the turn. It was checked to Gomes and before he even set down the chips for his bet, his opponent folded and surrendered the pot.
Gomes is back up to about 25,000.
Pierre Canali minimum-raised to 300 from early position, then Surinder Sunar made it 1,000 from middle position. It folded back around to Canali who made the call.
The flop came , and both players checked. The turn then brought the
and a bet of 1,875 from Canali, which Sunar promptly called.
The dealer burned a card and dealt the river. This time Canali fired out 5,000, and after thinking for a while Sunar made the call. Canali tabled his hand
-- two pair -- and Sunar shook his head, acknowledging the better hand as he showed his two red kings.
Sunar slips to 18,000 on that one, while Canali pushes back to around the starting stack of 30,000.
The chip denominations in play today are a bit unusual, and the existence of two different pastel oversized chips could prove tricky. Here is a breakdown of the colors:
Yellow - 25
Black - 100
Blue - 500
Red - 1,000
Oversized Pink - 5,000
Oversized Purple - 10,000
