Kido Pham Confounded

A player under the gun bets 200 and Kido Pham calls in the cutoff. The flop is J-3-4 and the player checks. Pham makes it 400 and the player calls. The turn is an 8. Both check. The river is a 5 and the other bets 700. Pham folds.

On the very next hand, Pham raises to 200 and the same guy re-pops to 500 in the big blind. Pham calls. The flop is {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. The player checks and and Pham goes all in. The opponent calls and has him covered. He has {A-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Pham has {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. Pham has 3,000 left.

Poker Legend Just Sat Down

Berry Johnston, 1986 WSOP Champion and one of the few players here with a huge banner up along the wall, is a member of the Poker Hall of Fame and is competing today. He's known as a gentleman player. In 1985, during the Main Event, he got into a monster pot with T.J. Cloutier. Johnston had A-K and Cloutier had A-J. Cloutier caught a jack on the river to knock Johnston out. He gracefully got up told his wife he was eliminated. His wife, who didn't know a thing about poker, said "Oh good, I'm hungry, can we go eat at the buffet now?"
"OK, if that's what you want to do," Johnston said.
It was poetic justice that Johnston won the following year.

Fabrice Soulier Takes Out an Opponent

On a flop of {8-Spades}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs}, Fabrice Soulier checked, a middle position player moved all in for his last 800 and Soulier called. Soulier was ahead with the {5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} while his opponent held {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. The turn was the {3-Hearts} and the river made Soulier two pair with the {5-Clubs}, eliminating his opponent.

Soulier was up to 9,000 after the hand.

John Juanda Picking Up Blinds

John Juanda is sitting at a table of awe-struck players. Most of them will remember playing at the table with him, not what their cards were. In the meantime, Juanda is betting out and picking up blinds. Good position for Juanda.

Table Chatter

One player at David Williams' table just will not shut up, chattering non-stop about everything from the hands in play to what great reads he is making.

"Sometimes, I just get this... FEELING about what cards are coming, you know?" he announced to the table.

"So, basically you're a warlock?" Williams deadpanned.

The entire table, and most of the surrounding area busted up.

An Inspirational Player

Ryan Smith
Ryan Smith
There is quite an inspirational story in progress. Ryan Smith is playing in a wheelchair with a long breathing tube supplying his oxygen. At the age of 3, he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. His friend sitting next to him is Mike Gauthier, who physically holds the hole cards for Smith to see. Smith pulls from the breathing tube to softly say fold, raise, etc.

What is so wonderful about poker is that Smith has as good a chance as any player to do well. If a gold bracelet is issued for courage and inspiration, it would go to Ryan Smith.

No Way, Jose

Aaron Williams breaks another player with pocket aces - the third time in two hours he's had the hand. He's won all three times. His opponent is all in for 5,000 and Williams calls with aces. "Don't tell me you have aces again!" says the opponent with A-10. "You're the Terminator!"

Williams is now at 27,000.

The Warlock Eliminates David Williams

If you check a few posts down you'll see the hilarious one-liner David Williams had about a player talking non-stop about his UNCANNY card sense. Williams said, "So, basically, you're a warlock."

Well, at least for today that chatty player, Mike Fraser, had the last laugh. Williams moved in his last 700 with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. Fraser called with {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and they held up. No word yet on whether Fraser's powers extend beyond the felt.
