Pros on the Rail

Johnny Chan playing in Event #54
Johnny Chan playing in Event #54
Ten-time WSOP bracelet winner Johnny Chan is also in the crowd today checking out the final table. Johnny Chan is also the last player to ever win back-to-back WSOP main event championships. That is a feat that may never get replicated ever again due to the gigantic fields. When Chan won in 1987, he outlasted a field of 152 players. The next year in 1988 there were 167 entrants.

Chan lost heads-up to Phil Hellmuth in 1989. Had he won that main event he would have run off three-consecutive world championships. No one has ever won three in a row and only Chan, Stu Ungar, Doyle Brunson, and Johnny Moss have won consecutive championships.

Hand #40 - Jon Kalmar

Hand #40 - Raymond Rahme has the button in seat 1, Jon Kalmar raises from middle position to 1 million, and Jerry Yang calls from the big blind. The flop comes {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs}, and both players check. The turn card pairs the board with the {10-Hearts}, and they check again.

The river card is the {5-Spades}, Yang bets 1.5 million, and Kalmar calls.

Yang says, "Good call," and shows 9-x for nine high. Jon Kalmar shows A-x to win the pot with ace high.

In 1982, instead of bracelets given to event winners at the WSOP, champions were awarded watches to commemorate their victory. Billy Baxter and David Sklansky won two events that year. They both won two watches.

At the 2007 WSOP main event, all of the final table players will be given watches by Corum, thier official sponsor.
