Event #2, $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em on Tap

Join us at noon today for the start of the first large-field event of the 2008 World Series, a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em tourney that highlights the opening weekend. This one is expected to be a record-setter for a $1,500 buy-in event, with over 3,000 players already registered by late Friday evening and hundreds more expected to sign up for the noon Saturday start, the first of two opening days (1a, 1b) for the event. It's the first of several busy weekends here at the Rio, so check back early and often for the latest updates from the Amazon Room!

Players Taking Their Seats

The players are starting to fill the Amazon Room here at the Rio with a huge field expected to hit the felt today for Event #2 of the 2008 World Series of Poker. We’ve received word that we’ll be close to a full field in the vicinity of 2,000 players today, with the event initially to be spread over four different rooms here in the Rio!

We’re about 15 minutes away from our scheduled start time, so lock in to PokerNews for all of the live action!

Is This the Right Room?

While the majority of the action is going on in the cavernous Amazon Room, not all players were fortunate enough to be assigned a seat there. The start of today's event is actually split into four separate areas. Some players are set up in the Tropical Room, where the satellites were being held prior to the start of the series. There are also entrants seated in front of Buzio's Seafood Restaurant here in the Rio, as well as in the poker room on the casino floor. We are busting at the seams with players here in Event #2.

A Case of Nerves

For a room full of several thousand poker players, staff and spectators, the Amazon Room has an odd sense of quiet to it. The dominant sound is the riffling of chips, punctuated by periodic declarations of "check," "bet," "raise" and "call". There is a nervous energy in the room, undoubtedly because many of the players are playing in their first WSOP event.

Big Room, Familiar Faces

Some of the toughest poker players are here competing in today's event, including Ted Forrest, Freddy Deeb, Erik Seidel, Kido Pham, "Miami" John Cernuto, David Sklansky, Greg Raymer, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Vanessa Rousso, T.J. Cloutier, Tim Phan, and Phil Ivey.

Khan Runs Into Trouble

Hevad "Rain" Khan called a middle position player who bumped the pot preflop to 150, but after the small blind raised to 550, and the original raiser called, Khan reraised to 1450. The small blind moved all-in for 2950, as did the middle position for a remaining 3200. Khan had both players covered and made the call.

The small blind turned over {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}, the middle position player showed {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Khan held {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}.

The board ran {10-Clubs}{A-Spades}{5-Hearts}{10-Spades}{K-Hearts}, leaving Khan short stacked around 500 as the pocket fives held up.

I've Got a Headache Already!

The Amazon Room is buzzing in anticipation with many overly excited players hitting the WSOP felt for the first time. We overheard one player comment, “I’ve got a headache already!” before turning his chair around to enjoy a nice early massage.
