An Evening of Razz

Katja Thater returns to defend her title
Katja Thater returns to defend her title
Razz makes its debut at 2008 WSOP (excepting brief appearances within several mixed-format events) in Event #26, $1,500 Razz. Razz is a game from the stud family where seven cards are dealt in total, with successive rounds of betting after the first three, and the goal is to construct the lowest possible hand, such as A-2-3-4-5... the unbeatable nuts in this format.

Action gets underway at 5pm PDT in the Amazon Room. Last year's $1,500 razz event drew 341 entrants and was captured by Katja Thater; her victory was worth $132,653.

Who Likes Sushi?

Tournament Director Jack Effel
Tournament Director Jack Effel
Senior tournament director Jack Effel just made a unique announcement over the P.A. which is paraphrased below.

"A few of you have approached me and let me know that you like to eat sushi on your dinner break but you can't. The reason for that is because the sushi kitchen closes at 8 o'clock. So out of the four or five hundred of you here, I've gotta think there is thirty or forty of you that want some sushi. So if you want me to keep the sushi kitchen open for you, and you'll go eat there tonight, raise your hand."

A few dozen players, amused by the nature of this announcement, smiled and shyly raised their hands. Effel looked around the room and got an approximate count.

"OK," he said, "that should be enough." "I'll see what I can do and report back to you later."

Effel headed toward the media perch and spotted WSOP media director Nolan Dalla in borderline hysterics.

"What's so funny?" Effel asked. Dalla replied "In all my years in this business, I've never heard an announcement like that."

David Sklansky Takes Down a Pot

David Sklansky faced a bet on 5th street.

Sklansky: (X) (X) {A-?} {A-?} {5-?}
Opponent: (X) (X) {A-?} {6-?} {3-?}

After making the call, 6th street brought each player respectively:

Sklansky: (X) (X) {A-?} {A-?} {5-?} {8-?}
Opponent: (X) (X) {A-?} {6-?} {3-?} {10-?}

His opponent check-called a Sklansky bet.

Both players checked 7th street, and David Sklansky showed ({3-?}) ({4-?}) {A-?} {A-?} {5-?} {8-?} ({J-?}), which was good enough to win the pot.

Davis Sklansky now has 2,800 in chips.

"PearlJammer" Takes in a Pot

Jon "PearlJammer" Turner was involved in hand against an opponent, calling down until 6th street.

Turner: (X) (X) {K-?} {5-?} {7-?} {3-?}
Opponent: (X) {X} {J-?} {5-?} {6-?} {6-?}

"PearlJammer" led out after his opponent paired, prompting a quick fold. Turner then flashed the {6-Hearts} as he gathered the chips, and is now back at the starting stack of 3,000.
