Stud Hi/Low Kickoff Set for 5pm

Tom Schneider hopes to be too busy in the H.O.R.S.E. championship to defend his Event 45 title
Tom Schneider hopes to be too busy in the H.O.R.S.E. championship to defend his Event 45 title
The second of two events getting underway on Thursday jumps from the gate at 5pm PDT. That's Event 47, $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi/Low (Eight or Better), with the first eight levels of play set for Day 1 play.

In 2007, this event was one of two that Tom "Donkey Bomber" Schneider captured on his way to become the WSOP's Player of the Year. Schneider triumphed over 667 others, and survived an up-and-down final in the process, collecting $147,713 and his second bracelet with the win.

Big Name Pros Absent

It was a bit of organized chaos in the Brasilia Room to start the tournament, as registering players were given seat assignments in the Orange section of the Amazon Room across the hall -- where the $50,000 HORSE tournament is running. Everything appears to be straightened out now.

With the $50,000 HORSE tournament on Day 2 and only 12 players busted from that field, there is a notable dearth of top-tier professionals in the Stud Hi/Lo field. That has opened up some space for some of the less notable (but still talented) professionals to make their mark and try to snag a gold bracelet.

Sweet Svetlana Loses to Wheel

Picking up the action on fifth street:

Svetlana Gromenkova x-x / {7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: x-x / {3-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

The opponent checked and Gromenkova bet. The opponent called.

Sixth:
Gromenkova {3-Diamonds}
Opponent: {5-Hearts}

The opponent bet out and Gromenkova called.

Seventh:
Gromenkova x
Opponent x

The opponent checked in the dark and Gromenkova checked. "I got a wheel," the opponent said. "I thought I'd check it since we're playing a friendly game here."

Gromenkova: (x-x){7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}(muck)
Opponent: ({A-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}){3-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

The opponent won the pot.

Straight vs. Kristy Gazes

We caught this one on the end, but Kristy Gazes and two other players went to seventh street. One opponent turned over a straight and took the pot.

Kristy is right next to Svetlana Gromenkova at Table 3. Should be one to watch.
