"Hot Chips" Accumulates Chips

Robin Larsson limped from early position before Tiffany Michelle raised it up to 50,000 from the cutoff. The blinds folded and Larsson made the call.

They saw a flop of {4-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Larsson check-called the 80,000 bet from Michelle. The turn was the {6-Clubs} and again Larsson checked it over to Michelle, who bet enough to put Larsson all in. With about 300,000 behind, Larsson went into the tank before eventually giving up his hand.

Michelle is now up to 1.35 million chips.

Kostritsyn Headed the Wrong Way

Alexander Kostritsyn has found the going pretty tough early in Day 5. He took a flop of {J-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {J-Clubs} in a raised pot against Pontus Khosravi. The two players engaged in a game of chicken with Khosravi all in for 317,000 and Kostritsyn making the call.

Khosravi: {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}
Kostritsyn: {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}

Kostritsyn couldn't overtake Khosravi when the board ran out {10-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}. He is down to 420,000 after starting the day with over 1.1 million. Khosravi climbs to 670,000.

Davis Dents David

On a board of {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} Sean Davis fired out 100,000 before being raised an additional 150,000 from David "Chino" Rheem. Davis thought for a long time before making the call. The river was the {10-Clubs} and was quickly checked down by both players.

Sean showed down pocket jacks to take down the pot as Rheem mucked his hand. Rheem has taken a few recent hits to be back under 800,000 while Davis gets things moving in the right direction to move up to about 900,000.

Graddus Terwiss Cha Van Eliminated

Graddus Terwiss Cha Van - Eliminated
Graddus Terwiss Cha Van - Eliminated
We caught up to this hand just before the turn card came out. The board read {K-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} {4-Clubs} and Victor Ramdin had checked dark over to his only opponent, Graddus Terwiss Cha Van. The {K-Spades} hit the turn and Cha Van moved all in. Ramdin quickly called and they showed:

Cha Van: {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}
Ramdin: {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}

Cha Van was drawing dead. The turn was the meaningless {8-Spades} and Ramdin took down the pot. Graddus Terwiss Cha Van was eliminated and after the hand Ramdin looked around at his table and said "See...they never believe me...they think I'm crazy."

No Way, Jose

We came upon this one with the board showing {J-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Sarkis Akopyan had all of his chips in the middle, and Jose Barbero, who had Akopyan well covered, was there as well. The pot was about 750,000.

Akopyan had {A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, well behind Barbero, who'd flopped a set with {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. But the {6-Hearts} turn and {10-Hearts} river gave Akopyan the backdoor flush and new life. Akopyan claims those 750,000 chips, and Barbero is now down to 900,000.

Cornel Pazara Eliminated by Mark Vos

Cornel Pazara, gracious in defeat
Cornel Pazara, gracious in defeat
On a flop of {Q-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} {5-Clubs}, Cornel Pazara led out from the big blind, Mark Vos raised, Pazara moved all in and Vos made the call.

Pazara {J-Hearts} {9-Spades}

Vos {K-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}

After ESPN's cameras swarmed to get in place, the {8-Diamonds} immediately fell on the turn, making Vos's flush. The river was the {3-Spades} and Pazara was eliminated.

"Nice hand. Good luck to the rest of you guys," said Pazara as he shook his tablemates' hands and made a gracious exit.

Pazara's orange and yellow towers were shipped across the table to Vos, whose chip castle is growing by the minute. He's now up to 1,825,000.

Hellmuth Makes a Big Laydown

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth
On a board of {6-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}, Phil Hellmuth was involved in a three-way pot with Felix Osterland and Barry Leventhal. Hellmuth checked from middle position and Leventhal moved all in for 399,000.

Leventhal said, "If I lose, I'm gonna go to the buffet."

There was some additional chit-chat but Osterland eventually folded and the action was on Phil Hellmuth.

"I know you got something," said Hellmuth.

"I got a bluff," replied Leventhal.

After some additonal back-and-forth between the two men, Hellmuth eventually folded {Q-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} face up.

"Wow! How can you fold that?" asked David Saab from a nearby table.

The table encouraged Leventhal to show but he eventually mucked face down.

Bad Time To Make a Move

Before the flop Mao Qiu raised to 35,000 from late position and Nicholas Sliwinski called in the small blind. James McManus raised to 110,000 from the big blind and both Qiu and Sliwinski called. The flop came {10-Spades} {9-Hearts} {6-Hearts} and after Sliwinski checked McManus bet 170,000. Qiu then came over the top for 750,000 and after Sliwinski stepped aside McManus made the call.

He held {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} to Qiu's {K-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} and after the {9-Spades} came on the turn Mao was looking for a jack to save his tournament life. Instead the {5-Hearts} fell on the river and Qiu was eliminated from the Main Event. McManus now sits with a 2.7 million stack.

Overheard at the Tables

Blue #31

"...I turned my hand over and the guy said, 'That wins.' Then he said, 'Oh wait!' A 650,000 chip pot. No way he should have done that."

"Back a few years ago, you were allowed to hit a guy for that. They'd just ban you for twenty minutes..."

Green #5

[after counting down the table chip leader's stack]: "I just need to count something."

Blue #11

"He's not gonna root that hard against himself..."

Blue #35

Jeremiah Smith approached Mark Vos' table and was stopped by a security guard, who asked to see Smith's media badge.

Vos: "This gentleman's name is Jeremiah Smith. He came into today as one of the chip leaders."
