Not So Sweet for Sugar Bear

Al Barbieri
Al Barbieri
In a heads-up pot between Al "Sugar Bear" Barbieri and Jan von Halle, the two men watched a flop come down {10-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {2-Spades}. Barbieri came out with a bet of 12,000 and Von Halle put in the call.

Fourth street came the {6-Diamonds}. Barbieri bet again, 31,000 this time. Von Halle looked like he wanted to do something drastic, but he elected to simply make the call to see the last card.

The river was the {Q-Clubs}, and Barbieri moved all in. Von Halle instantly called, tabling {K-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} for the straight. His flush draw never materialized, but he filled in his gutshot on the river for the stone cold nuts. Barbieri showed his {2-Clubs} {2-Diamonds}, and he would pace behind the table for a few minutes before making his way to the payout desk, looking rather peeved.

Rapid Fire Eliminations

The short stacks are still getting their chips in a middle like the room is on fire. We just witnessed a four-way all-in confrontation, all pre-flop. One player had pocket tens, another had pocket nines, a third had pocket jacks, and the fourth had {A-Hearts} {10-Spades}. A flop of {6-Spades} {6-Clubs} {j-Diamonds} pretty much decided things in favor of the player with pocket jacks.

Charania Chugging Along

Mohsin Charania
Mohsin Charania
Mohsin Charania may have been edged out for the chip lead over the last hour or so, but he's not in reverse by any means. With Charania in the big blind, a player in the hijack seat opened with a raise to ~5,000. When it came to Charania, he moved all in, and his opponent called off his remaining 15,000, tabling {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts}. Charania turned over {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts}, and the race was on.

The big stack pulled away right out of the gate as the flop came down {10-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {8-Spades}. The {Q-Spades} and {2-Diamonds} filled out the board, providing no salvation for the at-risk player. Charania claims another victim, and he's still hovering right near the top with 190,000.

Break it Down

We've played two levels today, and it's time for a 20-minute break. The line at the cardboard pizza/stale coffee stand has now replaced the line at the payout desk as the most popular place in the room.

Blinds: 1,000/2,000

Gettin' There

We've just ticked under 200 players remaining as the knockouts continue at a blistering pace. More than 2,500 players have come and gone through 12 levels.

Setback for Jacob

Alex Jacob
Alex Jacob
Alex Jacob was sitting with the button when a player two seats to his right open-raised all in for about 17,000. Jacob peeked down at two red eights and quickly called the raise. His opponent opened two red jacks. We thought we were in for a good sweat on a flop of {J-Clubs} {9-Spades} {10-Spades}, but the {9-Clubs} turn took all the drama out of the hand. It made jacks full of nines for Jacob's opponent and left Jacob drawing dead.

Jacob still has plenty of chips.

Baker KO's Wong

Amanda Baker
Amanda Baker
Amanda Baker opened the pot with a raise to 5,000 from middle position. Mark Newhouse called from the button, and Christopher Wong moved all in from the small blind. The total amount was 15,900, but Baker wanted to play for more. She reraised all in herself, successfully isolating herself against the at-risk player.

Showdown
Baker: {9-Diamonds} {9-Spades}
Wong: {Q-Clubs} {K-Spades}

The board would run out {A-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {9-Clubs}. By virtue of her full house, Baker sends a player to the exit, chipping her way up to around 75,000 in the process.

Kang Keeps Climbing

When Benjamin Kang stands up, it certainly draws the eye. We walk up to his table as a flop of {Q-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {7-Clubs} is spread on the board, and about 25,000 chips are already piled in the middle of the table. We see that Kang is all in for 31,700, now standing behind his chair towering over the table. He has been put at risk by a big-stacked opponent across the table.

The young opponent tabled {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} for the overpair, but Kang had flopped lucky, his {6-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} turning into a set. The {A-Hearts} was a blank on the turn, and the {3-Clubs} that fell on the river was safe as well, neither man holding a club. With his timely set, Kang has earned a big double up, sitting with right at 90,000 now.
