Lisandro Jams Jamshidi

Just before the break, we picked up a sleeper pot on the flop. The board read {J-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {3-Hearts}, and action was on Sirous Jamshidi. He checked, and Jeff Lisandro bet 400, which Jamshidi called. The turn card came the {7-Hearts}, and Jamshidi checked again with grander intentions. Lisandro bet 1,100, and Jamshidi made it 3,000 straight. When Lisandro reraised to 13,000, Jamshidi moved all in and was quickly called.

Showdown
Jamshidi: {3-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}
Lisandro: {6-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}

Lisandro had spiked his straight to leave Jamshidi drawing dead to a board pair. The {2-Spades} on the river was a blank though, giving Lisandro the double up.

Jamshidi - 18,000
Lisandro - 50,500

Maridu Gets a Walk

With half of her table, including the small blind, still not back from break, Maridu Mayrinck found herself in the big blind.

Action folded back to Mayrinck who wasn't pleased. "Oh come on. Jesus," she said before showing {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}.

"We're playing short and no one wants to steal my blinds? Really?"

"Big Blind Special, Baby"

A player in middle position min-raised to 400 and got three callers, including the small blind and Scotty Nguyen from the big.

Action checked to the player in late position who bet 1,000 on a flop of {Q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. The small blind folded and Nguyen check-raised to 3,500, stealing the pot.

"Big blind special, baby," he said before scooping up the pot without showing his hand.

Frank Kassela Rivered

On a board of {9-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {K-Clubs} Frank Kassela checked from the small blind and a player in early position bet 3,000. Kassela made a check raise to 10,000 and was called.

The river brought the {A-Diamonds} and both players checked it down.

Kassela: {K-?} {9-Diamonds}
Early Position: {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}

The player in early position makes a better two pair on the river with ace-king, dropping Kassela to 21,525.

Mercier's Kings Paid

Isabelle Mercier

The small pots may not seem like much at the beginning of a poker tournament, but they add up later on. With 1,500 in the pot, Isabelle Mercier bet 600 on a flop of {9-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}. One opponent called the bet. Both players checked the {8-Hearts} turn. On the river {3-Hearts}, Mercier fired 1,500 chips into the middle. When she was called, she opened {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}. That was enough to collect the pot.

Four Jacks On 14!

There is one clearly overjoyed individual over on Table 14 right now. Not only did he eliminate his short-stacked opponent when his {J-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} held up against {K-Spades} {Q-Spades}, but he earned $100 worth of Jack Link's beef jerky for making quad jacks on the {J-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {3-Spades} {9-Hearts} {J-Spades} board. Ship the beef nuggets!

Cantu Moves back in the Plus

Brandon Cantu raised to 600 and the big blind called. The flop came down {K-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {4-Clubs} and after his opponent checked, Cantu fired out 625. The player made the call.

The turn brought the {5-Clubs} and both players checked. The river fell the {2-Diamonds} and Cantu's opponent checked. Cantu fired a bet and his opponent folded, moving Cantu up to 32,000.

A Historic Day for the WSOP

As another successful WSOP nears its completion, we think it's important to take a moment to recognize an epic milestone for the Series.

In its 40th year of existence, the WSOP has just officially crossed the $1,000,000,000 mark for total prize money awarded. That's one billion dollars, in case you're having trouble counting zeros. Though the complete numbers for this year's prize pool are still in the works, running tallies from today's entries confirm the milestone.

"It’s nice to reach this milestone during the 40th annual WSOP," said Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. "What’s most remarkable is that nearly two-thirds of this amount has been awarded in just the last four years. Poker is alive and well and here to stay."

For the fourth consecutive year, the total prize pool for 2009 will eclipse $155,000,000, making this far and away the most lucrative sporting event in the world. For the sake of comparison:

- Since 1959, the Daytona 500 has awarded $21,327,256 in prize money. Over the last three years, the Main Event champions at the WSOP have earned a combined $29,402,416
- Wimbledon has just finished up for 2009, paying out about $20,500,000 to its participants. That's less than one quarter of the total WSOP prize pool this year.
- Since 2001, the Kentucky Derby has paid its winners a total of about $16,700,000. The last two Main Event champions have earned a combined $17,369,517.

Our sincere congratulations go out to the WSOP and the entire staff over the past forty years for making this the premier gaming event in the world.

Chop Chop for Court

When a player in middle position raised to 600, Court Harrington re-raised to 1,700 from the small blind. He got the call and both players checked down the board that came {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{J-Spades}{Q-Spades}.

Harrington turned over {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} while his opponent showed {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts} to chop up the pot.
