Carpenters Aren't the Only Stud Experts

Who will win the gold bracelet?
Who will win the gold bracelet?
Welcome, poker fans, to the first $10,000 "World Championship" event of the 2009 World Series of Poker. Today the very best players seven-card stud players in the world will enter the Amazon Room, pull up a chair at an eight-handed table, and try to win the title of Seven-Card Stud World Champion.

Last year 158 players entered this tournament. It was a relative unknown, Eric Brooks, who took down the tournament and the $415,856 and gold bracelet that went along with it.

This year the official 2009 World Series of Poker Staff Resource Guide (a 232-page tome we wouldn't force anyone to read) is predicting a field of 166, an increase of eight players over last year. We'll see how accurate that prediction is soon enough.

Play should be underway at 5pm. PokerNews, the official live-update provider of the 2009 WSOP, will be there all the way from the first bring-in bet to the final elimination. Stick around! A world champion is in the making.

Let's Get it On

The players are in their chairs, and the turnout looks a little shaky so far for this pro-heavy field. There are only 79 players registered so far, though we expect a few dozen more to add their names over the next couple hours. After the uttering of the most famous words in poker, the cards are in the air, and we are underway here in the Seven-Card Stud World Championship!

Who's Here?

Things are starting to fill out a bit at the tables in the back right corner of the Brasilia Room. A partial list of players in attendance would include Jerry Buss, Chad Brown, Bill Chen, Michael Mizrachi, "Miami" John Cernuto, Katja Thater, Chau Giang and Daniel Negreanu, but there are plenty of other notables in the field. Check out the chip counts page for a full rundown of who we've spotted so far.

And of course, the defending champion, Eric Brooks, is here to try to pull a Thang Luu and go back-to-back in this event.

Late Arrivals

The field has risen to 120 players as John Hennigan, Barry Greenstein, Toto Leonidas, Todd Brunson, David Benyamine, Marco Traniello, Jen Harman, and Scotty Nguyen have taken their seats.

Registration is open for another 90 minutes as another few dozen are expected to trickle in.

Tables of Doom

In a $10,000 world championship event for a game that only hardened poker veterans play it's difficult to pick out a particular table that's the "toughest" table in the field. We submit these three tables for your consideration:

* David Benyamine, Jen Harman, Barry Greenstein, Eli Elezra
* Bill Chen, Mel Judah, Scotty Nguyen, Rob Hollink
* Matt Glantz, Daniel Negreanu, Perry Friedman, Shawn Sheikhan

Schulman Strikes it Rich

David Benyamine was the bring-in showing the {7-Clubs}. Nick Schulman completed with the {J-Spades} in the door, and Benyamine was the lone caller.

Fourth street brought Schulman the {9-Diamonds}, and he put out a bet of 200. Benyamine came along after drawing the {Q-Hearts}.

On fifth street, Schulman's {A-Hearts} was worth a bet of 400, and Benyamine called after picking up the {3-Clubs}.

Sixth street gave Schulman the {5-Clubs} and Benyamine the {J-Hearts}, and both players checked this time.

On seventh street, Schulman bet once more, and Benyamine called.

Showdown
Schulman: ({K-Clubs}{10-Clubs}) {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} {5-Spades} ({Q-Diamonds})
Benyamine: (X-X) {7-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {J-Hearts} (X)

Beyamine had no answer for Schulman's Broadway straight, sending a nice early pot across the felt.

19th Hole

Rumor has it Phil Ivey will be joining us shortly. We overheard Barry Greenstein chatting with the rail, and it seems Ivey is killing the first few levels of Day 1 on the golf course. Notorious for making a late entrance, we fully expect to see Ivey after he works his way back to the clubhouse.

Other notables who have just taken their seats include Andy Bloch, Dario Minieri, David Oppenheim, and Rafe Furst. There are 128 players so far, with another 40 minutes left to register.

Sugar Bear on a Quest for Candy

"Hey candy girl!" Al 'Sugar Bear' Barbieri called out. "How much for a candy bar this year? $2.50? $3?" Upon hearing the various prices for candy (all $3 or more), Barbieri waved her off.

"What, $3 too much for you?" asked one player at the table.

"I'm broke!" said Barbieri. "We've all been broke at some point."

"If you want a candy bar, you should buy a candy bar," someone else said. "You won't pay $3 for candy, but you have no problem with the juice you paid for this tournament?"

"Alright, alright you all shamed me into it," replied Barbieri. "CANDY!"
