Marafioti Gets Some Value

Matt Marafioti limped in from the small blind and Peter Jetten checked his option. Marafioti checked to Jetten on the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop. He bet 30,000 and Marafioti called. Both players checked the {A-Clubs} on the turn. The river fell the {7-Hearts} and Marafioti checked a third time. Jetten tanked for about 60 seconds before settling on a 90,000 bet. Mariafioti called.

Marafioti showed {J-Clubs}{10-Spades} for the straight and Jetten mucked. Marafioti is up to 815,000.

Stein Moves Jetten

Peter Jetten and Sam Stein had built a pot of close to 200,000 by the time the river arrived on a {8-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {J-Hearts} board. Jetten was leading the betting, and he fired out a healthy wager of 150,000, about a third of his remaining stack.

When Stein slid out a raise to 355,000 total, Jetten sunk in his chair, and he asked the dealer to pull in the call so he could see what he was facing. It was another 205,000 to him, and Jetten had just 340,000 in front of his spot. He mumbled to himself for several minutes, throwing out the occasional expletive as he toyed with the decision. Finally, he folded.

That leaves him with just those 340,000 chips, and Sam Stein is now sitting right at the million-chip mark.

Birds on the Rail

We haven't yet reached our "official" final table but a decent-sized rail has started to form over the last half-hour. A group of 2+2-ers has taken over one side, while about two dozen Russians and Germans are conversing in their native tongues on the other. Many of the Germans are wearing their national colors of red, yellow, and black and carrying German flags. A few bracelet winners are hovering around as well-- Scott Seiver (who offered to fetch Matt Marafioti a Red Bull for $500) and Alex Kravchenko, who has been stealthily camping out in media row in between bouts of pacing.

Kings of Cards

Tom Marchese
Tom Marchese

Tom Marchese opened for 55,000 and Konstantin Bucherl made the call.

Like a starving supermodel, the flop was the beautiful, yet frightening {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. Marchese bet 65,000 and Bucherl called. The turn was a fourth king, the {K-Spades} and Marchese led again, this time for 135,000. Again, Bucherl called. The river was the {8-Spades} and after a long think, Marchese made it 390,000 to go. Bucherl tanked for several minutes before folding his hand.

Marchese is up to 1,390,000 while Bucherl fell to 765,000.

Jetten Saves Some

When the table folded around to the blinds, Peter Jetten opened to 90,000 from the small. Big blind Sam Stein took a good look at his stack before saying, "Pot," and Jetten shrunk. he had just 275,000 chips left in his stack, and it quickly became obvious that he couldn't call all in. He shook his head and mucked his cards, saving those nine bigs for a better spot.

Stern Helping Calderaro's Cause

Short stack James Calderaro is opening up a little breathing room thanks to Dani Stern. Three hands ago, Stern opened from the button with a raise to 70,000. Calderaro announced a pot reraise from the big blind, but he didn't move.

"Can you put it out there?" Stern asked.

"What? You can't see it here?" Calderaro asked, now moving his towers forward. Stern let him finish, then folded. "I knew that's what was going to happen, that's why..." Calderaro trailed off.

Just now, Stern opened another pot to 70,000, and Calderaro promptly potted it again. Stern folded more quickly this time, and Calderaro has worked his stack back to a half-million chips with those no-showdown pots.
