Kelly Takes Advantage of His Advantage

Dan Kelly
Dan Kelly

Shawn Buchanan raised from the button, and Dan Kelly called out of the big blind to go heads up to the flop.

It came {2-Spades} {9-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}, and Kelly check-called a 230,000-chip continuation bet. Buchanan checked behind on the {4-Hearts} turn, though, and Kelly took the opportunity to lead out for 475,000 when the {2-Clubs} landed on the river. Buchanan couldn't call; he slid his cards into the muck, dropping down under 3.5 million.

Shawn Buchanan raised to 175,000 from the button, and Frank Kassela passed from the small blind. In the big, Dan Kelly slid in a three-bet to 480,000 total, and Buchanan made the call.

The flop brought {2-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {7-Spades}, and Kelly continued out with a small bet of 365,000. After a few minutes of careful consideration, Buchanan mad a deliberate reraise to 770,000, and Kelly folded with a quick frown.

Kelly - 6.5 million
Buchanan - 4.1 million

Buchanan Bluffs Kassela

Frank Kassela opened for 175,000 from the button, Shawn Buchanan raised to 535,000 from the big blind and Kassela called.

Both players checked the {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop. The turn was the {2-Clubs} and Buchanan led out for 425,000. Kassela called and they went to the river. It was the {5-Clubs} and Buchanan bet 1,060,000. Kassela gave up his hand and Buchanan took down the pot, showing {K-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for only king-high.

Buchanan is up to 5.2 million.

Kassela Bullies Buchanan

Frank Kassela raised to 200,000 from the button, and Shawn Buchanan called to see a flop from the big blind.

It came out {2-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {9-Spades}, and Buchanan check-called a bet of 295,000. That brought them to the {7-Diamonds} turn, pairing the board. Kassela wasn't slowing down now, and he fired out a second bullet 475,000 chips strong. Buchanan pulled out a stack of greens (500,000) and cut them down, then pulled another stack out of his pyramid and staged it in front of him. He shuffled another handful of chips, shooting sideways glances across the table now and then.

Eventually, he folded.

Buchanan - 4.1 million
Kassela - 4.5 million

Frank Kassela Eliminated in 3rd Place ($556,053)

Frank Kassela, 3rd place
Frank Kassela, 3rd place

Shawn Buchanan completed the small blind and Frank Kassela checked his option in the big blind.

The flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Buchanan checked to Kassela, who bet 80,000. Buchanan raised to 260,000 and Kassela came back over the top for 710,000. Buchanan called. The turn came the {10-Diamonds} and Buchanan checked again. Kassela bet 1,000,000, Buchanan moved all-in and Kassela made the call!

With 7,280,000 in the pot, the cards went on their backs.

Kassela {Q-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Buchanan {5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Kassela sprung back like he'd been electrocuted when he laid his eyes on Buchanan's hand- an open-ended straight draw against his two pair. The entire audience rose to their feet as the dealer burned and turned the river.

It was the {2-Spades}. Kassela threw his hands up in the air as Buchanan made his straight. So much for being an 82% favorite with one to come.

Buchanan's fans erupted in cheers, although their man hardly moved a muscle as the massive pot was shipped his way, and Kassela exited the stage in third place. With his finish today, Kassela has 285 points in the WSOP Player of the Year race, 60 points ahead of second-place John Juanda, and is a near-lock to win POY honors.

We're on a brief pause while the stacks are counted up and the table is prepared for heads-up play.
