The Grand Dame of Poker

That's the title Jeffrey Pollack gave to Wendeen Eolis in 2007 after she recorded her 5th cash at the World Series of Poker. Eolis was the first woman to ever cash in the Main Event, finishing 25th in 1986 for $10,000. In 1993 she cashed in the Main yet again, finishing 20th for $12,000.

We're going to keep our eyes on the Grand Dame today as she starts her quest for a third Main Event cash.

Saout Chips Up

On a board reading {9-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} with around 4,000 in the pot, Antoine Saout led out for 3,025 with his lone opponent in the hand check-calling.

The river fell a third six - the {6-Diamonds} - and after a check, Saout splashed the pot with three 5,000-denomination chips amounting to a bet of 15,000.

After a few moments of deliberation, Saout's opponent tossed his cards into the muck to see the 2009 November Niner collect the pot and move to 36,100 in chips.

One for the Sheik

There was 1,125 in the pot preflop and three players to a flop of {2-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Eddy Sabat checked and Shawn Sheikhan bet 800. The player on the button folded and Sabat made the call.

The turn was the {8-Spades} and Sabat checked. Sheikhan's bet of 1,500 received a call and the {3-Spades} bet on the river. Once again Sabat checked and Sheikhan threw out a bet, this time 3,300. It was enough to get Sabat to fold and Sheikhan is already up to 33,000.

Early Fumble For Emmitt

Emmitt Smith and one opponent saw a flop of {10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Smith checked, his opponent bet 500, and Smith called. The turn brought the {Q-Spades}. Smith again checked, and his opponent bet 2,000. Smith check-raised to 4,000, and his opponent made the call.

The river brought the {Q-Diamonds}, pairing the board. Smith checked, and his opponent checked as well.

"Straight," said Smith. "Straight," echoed his opponent. They tabled their cards. Smith's opponent showed {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts} for the king-high straight. But Smith had {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} -- not quite the straight he'd announced.

"That's what you call a turnover," said Smith with a grin. The football great slips to 25,000 here in the early going.

Andrew Seidman Building Up Some Karma

Andrew "BalugaWhale" Seidman can been seen in the field today, but it's not without a pair of crutches tucked underneath his seat. When we asked him what had happened, he informed us that upon getting in last night he was playing some basketball at a friend's house where he really busted up his ankle.

"And if that's not enough, my apartment burned down last week!" he added.

Rough times for Seidman, but he's still got a smile on his face. "I'm building up some real karma," he said.

Hopefull that karma kicks in during the WSOP Main Event.

Fancy Sweating That...

Within just a few minutes we heard the rather unexpected cry of: "All-in and a call!" and like a jet-propelled whippet we raced over to the crime scene to check out the action.

The man with the chalk outline had gone out with {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}, all the chips going in on a {K-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} with Corey Emery holding {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} for top set. Although Emery commanded the dealer to "pair the board" before each subsequent street, it was unnecessary as the {3-Diamonds} turn and {6-Diamonds} river were both blanks, and we had our first exit of the day.

But as he collected his wooden spoon, the fallen player was reflective in defeat, commenting with a smile: "Did you see how he sucked out with those kings?"

Meanwhile, Emery is your new chip leader with 60,000 and wearing a smile that would require a crowbar and a tub of Vaseline to remove. "He had top set, but fancy sweating that ****," commented our field reporter, which made me laugh.

Keller Finds Double

On a board reading {9-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{A-Spades}{7-Hearts} and the pot sitting at around 22,000, Shawn Keller moved all in for his last 19,575 and was immediately snapped off by his opponent.

Keller tabled his strong, but still vulnerable {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}, only to be relieved when his opponent slammed down his {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}.

The table looked quite bemused as Keller raked in the pot to move to 61,000 and change.

Do I Know You From Somewhere?

Over in this corner of the Pavilion we noticed that Joe Hachem and Steve Dannenmann are siting at adjacent tables.

In case you don't recall, Dannenmann finished runner-up to Hachem in the 2005 Main Event. While it's unlikely that they will find themselves at the same table anytime today, it is interesting to see the two playing so close together.

More Perusing of the Pavilion

We're spotting a few more familiar faces as we make our first rounds here in the Pavilion Room, among them David Chiu, David Saab, Bill Edler, Paul Parker, and David Tuchman.

Justin "Boosted J" Smith is here, too. As are Steve "MrSmokey1" Billirakis, Prahlad "Spirit Rock" Friedman, and Chris "Jesus" Ferguson.

Cornflakes & RedBull

It would appear as though the players in the orange section had RedBull on their Cornflakes this morning, as danafish responds to our second "All-in and a call" of the day.

As she left, Paul Jackson approached from the feature table and reported with a raised eyebrow: "This guy just check-called 15,000 on the river with king high. Other guy had a full house."

Early signs suggest that players are trying to become the 2010 WSOP Champion on Day 1d.
