Event #11: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better Championship

Day 3 Started

Catch-22

Guillaume Rivet - Le chip daddy
Guillaume Rivet - Le chip daddy

Welcome back for Day 3 of the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Championship. Today is the final day of this event. At least that's what the schedule tells us. In reality, though, the chances of us playing down to a winner within the allotted twelve hours is quite slim. In this event last year, 23 players returned for Day 3, and it was well after sunrise before Sammy Farha slipped the bracelet on his wrist. We have a ten-level cap on the day, so we'll likely still have a partial table full of players when the clock runs out.

Guillaume Rivet has a pile of chips in his bag, working his stack up to 809,000 by the end of Day 2. His nearest challenger is Alessio Isaia, and he'll be a favorite to make his second final table of the 2011 WSOP today. Mike Sexton bubbled the final table of this event last year with a 10th-place finish, and he'll be looking to carry his 321,000 chips a little farther than that this time around.

Joining those fellas are the likes of Richard "Chufty" Ashby, Steve Billirakis, Josh Arieh, Eric Buchman, and our two favorite Deebs, Shaun and Freddy.

Things are set to get rolling in about 25 minutes, and we've got a ringside seat for the action. We'll reduce this field as far as we can before we run out of levels on what will no doubt be an action-packed day. Stay tuned!

Oh to Be Young...

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante

The players on Table 286 is engaging in some interesting conversation about the new generation of poker players.

"I feel so old," Steve Billirakis announced. "I don't know how they do it."

"They play eight hours, go over hand histories for four hours, and then chat with three other great players for another four hours," Josh Arieh added. "It's like they work 16-hour days."

"I hate stats though," Mikael Thuritz piped up.

"Me too," Arieh responded. "HUD's will be banned when poker is legalized too."

The table continued to discuss head up displays (HUDs) and there affect on the game as a whole. The majority of them agreed that they are bad for the game, and should be barred if online poker is ever legalized in the United States.

Lind Bites Isaia

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante

George Lind raised preflop, and Alessio Isaia defended his big blind to go heads up.

The flop came {K-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {10-Spades}, and Isaia check-raised Lind's continuation bet. Two bets went in apiece, and the {K-Hearts} turn drew another bet from Isaia. Lind called, and Isaia bet the {A-Hearts} river as well. Lind raised now, and Isaia quickly mucked.

Isaia is down to 455,000 after dropping that pot, while Lind climbs to 265,000.

Billirakis Building

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante

We've seen Steve Billirakis drag a few big pots early, and it's moved his stack up into the high 300,000s.

The last pot we watched saw Billirakis raising from the small blind and Mikael Thuritz defending his big. Billirakis bet the {10-Clubs} {5-Spades} {8-Spades} flop, and Thuritz raised. Billirakis reraised right back, and Thuritz called to see the {K-Hearts} turn. Billirakis check-called a bet now, and he led back out with a big bet of his own following the {4-Spades} river. Thuritz called the last shell, and he'd only get a quarter of this pot.

Showdown
Billirakis: {A-Spades} {2-Spades} {6-Clubs} {7-Hearts} (nut flush, nut low)
Thuritz: {A-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} (nut low)

Mr. Billirakis is up to about 365,000 now, doing good work over there on the middle table.

Jim Grove Eliminated in 22nd Place ($16,329)

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante

Guillaume Rivet opened with a raise, and Jim Grove three-bet for most of his chips a couple seats over. Rivet called.

The flop came {2-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}, and Grove raised his last 15,800 chips into the pot with Rivet looking him up.

Showdown
Rivet: {A-Spades} {Q-Spades} {4-Spades} {8-Spades}
Grove: {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} {6-Spades}

Grove's overpair was ahead, but the turn {Q-Diamonds} was a disaster. He needed help in a hurry, but the river {J-Clubs} was a blank, ending his day in 22nd place. That's good for more than $16,000, and the first paycheck of Day 3.

Gonzalez Wheels Miraculous Double

Action folded to Fabrizio Gonzalez in the small blind who put in a raise. Richard Ashby called out of the big, and the board came {9-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Hearts}. Both players checked.

The turn brought the {3-Hearts}, Gonzalez checked, Ashby bet, and Gonzalez tank-called all in. The hands were opened.

Ashby: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Gonzalez: {10-Spades}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}

Ashby had a vicegrip on the high, but any low card would give Gonzalez half of the pot and he would scoop with a deuce. Miraculously, the {2-Diamonds} spiked on the river to give him the wheel and the entire pot! Gonzalez's rail jumped with excitement, while Ashby was left muttering under his breath.

Eric Buchman Eliminated in 21st Place ($16,329)

Eric Buchman - 21st Place
Eric Buchman - 21st Place

Eric Buchman got the remainder of his stack in the middle against Mikael Thuritz with the board reading {5-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}.

Buchman: {2-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}
Thuritz: {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Buchman hated seeing Thuritz's hand, and was in desperate need of some help. He found none from the {7-Clubs} on the turn or the {k-Hearts} on the river however, and was eliminated in 21st place.
