While carousing around the tournament area, we noticed that there was a hand on Table 285 with five up-cards.
Strange, right?
We came to find out that while dealing seventh street, the dealer slipped, and Shawn Sheikhan's seventh card was exposed. The rules state that if one down-card is dealt up, the subsequent cards should be dealt up as well. So, David Fox's seventh card was dealt up, and the boards looked like this.
Sheikhan: (X)(X) /
Fox: (X)(X) /
Sheikhan tossed out a bet, which brought up another question: Can a player bet if his card is exposed? The consensus was yes. The only way a player would be forced to check is if he purposefully exposed the card, which Sheikhan did not.
The bet stood, and Fox opted to make the call. Sheikhan opened up for a ten-six-four, and won the pot.
We caught up with the action on fourth where Scott Pfeffer led out and Thomas Hunt III made the call. On fourth and fifth, Hunt bet and Pfeffer called. Hunt checked blind on seventh and Pfeffer made a bet. Hunt called and his opponent revealed for an eighty-seven. Hunt turned over however which gave him an eighty-six for a better low and the pot.
The 100-chip ante cost Alexander Kostritsyn half his stack, and he called all in for 100 with a up right behind the bring-in. "Under the gun raises all in," he said with a smirk. "Respect that." Around the table, Owais Ahmed completed with a , and that got him heads-up with Kostritsyn, freerolling for the knockout. The boards ran out thusly:
Ahmed: () / ...
Kostritsyn: () / ...
Kostritsyn went ahead and stood up after fifth street, gathering his belongings as he was drawing nearly dead. He did manage to run out a ninety-eight by the end, but Ahmed's eighty-seven had Kostritsyn's elimination sealed.
Alexander Wice was just heads up with Alan Sternberg on Table 276, and when we arrived the boards looked like this:
Wice: (X)(X) /
Sternberg: (X)(X) /
Wice check-called a bet from Sternberg, and on sixth street, Wice was dealt a , and Sternberg a . They got two bets in, enough to put Sternberg all in, and the hands were opened.
Wice:
Sternberg:
Wice caught a on seventh, giving him an eight-seven-six and the lead, but Sternberg pulled a to make an eight-six-four.
"Don't see how you faded the three threes," Bryan "The Icon" Micon joked after the hand.
We caught up with the action on fourth where Max Weinberg bet and Michael Mills called. Chad Brown came in with a raise though which was met with a re-raise from Weinberg. Mills got out of the way and Brown made the call. On all remaining streets, Weinberg bet and Brown called. Weinberg revealed for a 7-5-4-3-A low while Brown showed for a 7-5-4-3-2 low that was one worse than Weinberg’s.
We caught up with the action on sixth where big-stack Tommy Chen bet and Bryan Micon called. On seventh, both players checked and Micon announced “Jack”. Chen took his down-cards and slammed them down which made it seem to us and several others at the table like he was angrily mucking them. However the cards were face up and showed for a ten-low which was good to give Chen the pot.
Michael Binger completed and Lacey Jones raised. Binger made the call and led out on fourth. Jones called and then she led out on fifth. Binger called and he led out once again on sixth. Jones came in with a raise this time which Binger called as both players checked seventh. Jones showed for a 7-6-4-2-A low while Binger flashed for a worse seventy-six before he mucked.
