Day Closes with Field in the Money, Locke Leads

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Day 1 of Event 21, $1,000 No Limit Hold’em, of the World Series of Poker has wrapped up. The event saw 2,799 entrants sign up for 11 levels of action but only 228 remain. Edward Locke appears to have the chip lead with 133,200.

Forming the chase pack behind Locke are Joseph Cappello (124,000), Efran Garcia Louzao (97,800) and Chris McClung. Notables Kory Kilpatrick (89,900), Dan Smith (66,000), Austen Johnson (62,000), Martin Staszko (38,700), John Duthie (33,800), Christian Harder (28,800) and Maria Ho (27,600) are still in contention and have the experience to climb the counts.

It was a day marked by attrition as players by dozens filed out of the tournament room. Late in the day the tournament averaged 4.7 eliminations per minute with the final number being 3.9 eliminations per minute.

Notables Tommy Vedes, Tristan Wade, Amanda Musumeci, David “Doc” Sands, Liv Boeree, Vanessa Selbst, Jose “Nacho” Barbero, Chad Brown, David Williams, Brian Hastings, Dwyte Pilgrim, Scott Clements, Fabrice Soullier and David Benyamine all the event a shot but did not advance to Day 2.

The money bubble popped as the field rolled into Level 11. They played three rounds of hand-for-hand play before Fentisov Viacheslar was eliminated. The board showed {10-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {A-Spades} {9-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} and John Manggunio moved all in on the river. Viacheslar called and tabled pocket queens for a set but Manggunio used the river queen to make a straight holding {K-Hearts} {J-Hearts}.

Day 2 will begin a 1:00 p.m. PST tomorrow in the Amazon Room. The schedule calls for the field to play ten levels or to a final table nine – whichever should come first. Follow all the WSOP action live on PokerNews.com
