Helman Holding Steady

Jackie Helman is one of several players in today's event participating in the Onnit Labs' Last Sticker Standing promotion. Players sporting Onnit stickers are not only competing against the rest of the field, but each other, too, with the one lasting the longest winning a cool $750.

Helman maintained her starting stack for the first couple of levels. Just now she was involved in a hand in which she bet from late position following a {9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop and got a caller in her opponent on the button. There was about 1,800 in the middle, then, when the turn brought the {J-Diamonds}. This time Helman checked, and when her opponent fired a bet 900, Helman folded, ensuring she's going to be lasting longer.

Weisner Chipping Up

Melanie Weisner
Melanie Weisner

A player in middle position limped, the small blind called, and Melanie Weisner raised to 400 from the big blind. The original limper called and the small blind folded, and we were off to a flop of {Q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs}. Weisner bet 600 and the other player called. The turn brought the {6-Diamonds} and both players checked. When the {6-Spades} hit the river, Weisner fired 700 and her opponent called once again. Wesiner rolled over {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for two pair, and the other player mucked.

Danielle Barille Exits

Danielle Barille
Danielle Barille

After having her stack crippled, PokerNews' own Danielle Barille lost a flip and the rest of her stack.

A player in middle position raised to 450 and action folded around to Barille, who shoved for 1,450. The original raiser called, and the cards went on their backs:

Barille: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Seat 2: {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}

The board rolled out {Q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Barille's pair of tens finished second best.

Gertrude Giving the Ladies Event Another Go

Gertrude Schimmel
Gertrude Schimmel

Gertrude Schimmel limped in from middle position, and it folded around to the big blind who checked. Both checked the {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop and {8-Diamonds} turn. When the river brought the {J-Hearts}, the player in the big blind bet 300, and after holding up her cards to recheck them, Schimmel made the call.

Schimmel held {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for the straight, better than the {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} of her opponent, and she claimed the small pot.

Schimmel held up her cards because her eyesight isn't so good. Nor is her hearing. But her poker skills are spot on, as the 94-year-old has been playing the game well over 50 years.

Schimmel is a retired deputy chief inspector of the New York Police Department who used to play at the WSOP regularly. She's cashed five times in the ladies event in the past, including final tabling in 1998 when she finished fourth.

Her niece is here assisting Schimmel a bit with reading the board and following the action. She told us how Schimmel hadn't played at the WSOP in a while, but this year had an idea she wanted to come back again and give it another go.

She also explained how her best game is seven-card stud — which used to be the game here in the ladies event up until 2000. But Schimmel seems to be holding her own just fine thus far in our no-limit hold'em tournament.

LePage Cruising

Annie LePage "can't lose" today, according to one of her tablemates. LePage just eliminated a player at her table with {A-Spades}{10-Clubs} against {Q-Spades}{J-Spades} after all the chips went in preflop. The board ran out {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Spades}, and LePage increased her stack to 11,200.

Peck Prospering

Beth Peck is one of the early leaders in the Onnit Labs Last Sticker Standing promotion. We just witnessed Peck and three other players see a flop of {K-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. The first player to act bet 1,000, and Peck quickly raised to 2,500. Everyone else folded, and Peck scooped the pot to boost her stack close to 12,000.

Peck can win $750 if she outlasts the other women wearing an Onnit Labs patch today. She's well on her way!
