Jason Mercier Eliminated in 22nd Place ($7,881)

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Jason Mercier - 22nd Place
Jason Mercier - 22nd Place

Before the level changed, Jason Mercier raised the pot (14,000) out of the cutoff, leaving around 12,000 or so behind. The action folded to JJ Liu, who tanked for quite some time before re-raising Mercier all in. He instantly called.

Mercier: {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Liu: {a-Clubs}{6-Spades}

The flop fell {k-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, giving Mercier both backdoor straight and flush draws, and the {j-Diamonds} on the turn was the best non-queen, non-eight card in the deck. Now, Mercier was open-ended, could make a flush with any diamond, and an eight would still give him a best hand with a pair of eights.

Unfortunately for Mercier, the {j-Spades} bricked on the river, and he was eliminated.
