Vasile Buboi Bounces Ludovic Riehl

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Ludovic Riehl Has Hit the Rail Here on Day 2
Ludovic Riehl Has Hit the Rail Here on Day 2

Ludovic Riehl decided to smooth call a preflop raise with {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}, playing for a big score rather than the sure win, and in doing so he opened the door for Vasile Buboi to take the rest of his chips.

The action began before the flop, when Riehl opened for a raise and Buboi three-bet. Riehl may have ended the hand with a four-bet, but he flatted instead, bringing on a flop of {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}.

Buboi checked to Riehl, and with top set on a draw heavy board, he led right out for a bet of 23,000. When Buboi responded with a check-raise to 100,000 even, Riehl studied for a moment before announcing himself all in.

The snap-call by Buboi immediately suggested that top set was no good, and indeed he turned over the {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a flopped flush. Standing in hopes of pairing the board, Riehl watched as the turn came {10-Clubs}, and the river {3-Hearts}.

Just like that, the young French pro went from holding pocket rockets to holding a payout slip for a 32nd place finish, while Buboi solidified his position for a final table run.

Nicolas Cardyn Carves Up Kid Poker

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Nicolas Cardyn Just Pulled the Wool Over Daniel Negreanu's Eyes Here on Day 2
Nicolas Cardyn Just Pulled the Wool Over Daniel Negreanu's Eyes Here on Day 2

We saw Daniel Negreanu going through his familiar routine of talking through a hand, and we soon found out why as he was faced with a bet for most of his chips.

The action started before the flop, when Negreanu opened for an undetermined amount, and called a raise to 25,000 made by Nicolas Cardyn.

When the flop fell {7-Spades}{q-Spades}{10-Spades}, Cardyn went for the power play and moved all in for his last 78,100. Negreanu began to calculate and contemplate, speaking to himself as he did so.

"You have the nine of spades and the nine of hearts..." he said, working through the various permutations to arrive at the correct conclusion. "That's exactly what you have isn't it?"

With Cardyn sitting perfectly still, Negreanu searched for a read to work with, but no clues were forthcoming from the impassive Frenchman.

Eventually, after counting out the chips he would be left with in the event his hand was no good, Negreanu announced "OK, I call," and moved a stack forward to signify his commitment.

When Cardyn rolled over the {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}, Negreanu exclaimed "oh s--t!," before tabling his {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

"Nice hand," he continued. "I thought you had two nines."

The turn ({6-Diamonds}) and river ({5-Spades}) brought no help to Negreanu, and with the misread most of his chips were shipped across the table.

Jonathan Little's Stack is Anything But Here on Day 2
Jonathan Little's Stack is Anything But Here on Day 2

Moments after hand for hand play ended with the bursting of the money bubble, we noticed Jonathan Little and Daniel Negreanu were getting lonely over at the far table, and a bit of investigation revealed the reason.

With Little adding an entire wing to his already massive chip castle, it became clear the Day 1 chip leader had notched yet another elimination.

We found out that one hand after eliminating Ryan Eriquezzo with {A-}{A-} against {10-}{10-}, Little engaged in a preflop raising war against an opponent holding {K-}{K-}.

After all of the chips were in the middle, Little found himself way behind with his {A-}{K-}, but an ace in the window gave him the unlikely advantage in the hand. Two blanks later, and a massive pot was being pushed his way.

Shortly thereafter, we saw a short stack move his last 38,200 in for an all-in move, and Little took time away from stacking his mountain of chips to make the call.

Little's {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} put him in a race against the vulnerable player's {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}, but with the rush Little was on, it was no surprise when the flop came {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{3-Spades}. The turn ({a-Hearts}) and river ({3-Hearts}) changed nothing, and another pelt was added to Little's growing collection of fallen foes.

The Worst Sweat of His Life

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Ryan Eriquezzo Can Relax After a Particularly Brutal Bubble Sweat
Ryan Eriquezzo Can Relax After a Particularly Brutal Bubble Sweat

Ryan Eriquezzo just moved all in for his last 36,900 holding {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}, and Jonathan Little made the call to put him at risk.

Before the hand could play out, however, they players were forced to wait until every other table had concluded their last deal, meaning Eriquezzo was forced to wait for five minutes with his tournament life hanging in the balance.

"This is the sickest sweat ever," he said, while Little told him that they were flipping. "Let's just get it over with."

Eventually, the tournament director authorized the dealer to do her thing, and after Little turned over his {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}, she rolled out the {5-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop.

Eriquezzo was in no mood to wait any longer.

"Faster please," he asked jokingly, while the dealer turned the {7-Hearts}. "Thank you!"

The {6-Spades} on the river was meaningless, and Eriquezzo retook his seat one step closer to the cash.

'Bout Time to Hit the Ol' Dusty Trail

T.J. Cloutier Just Made an Unexpected Departure from Day 2
T.J. Cloutier Just Made an Unexpected Departure from Day 2

With just a few eliminations separating T.J. Cloutier from his third cash in four WSOP events this summer, the living legend of poker showed that true pros are always gunning for first place. Unfortunately for Cloutier, a bold play ended in spectacular fashion, ending his tournament abruptly after he had cruised throughout much of the day.

The action began before the flop, when Cloutier opened for 4,200 from the small blind. Mike Sowers elected to defend his big blind with a three-bet, making it 12,000 to play.

Cloutier then snap-shoved for his remaining 150,000 or so chips, and Sowers responded with a snap-call, tabling the {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. Sheepishly turning over just {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, Cloutier had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, and a final run out of {2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}{7-Spades} left him with nothing but crumbs.

"How's that for A-B-C poker," opined Cloutier, still proud of his ability to go toe to toe with the online generation at the age of 73 years young.

After counting out the stacks, Cloutier told Sowers "I didn't think ya had that much," before making a hasty exit from the Amazon Room.

Negreanu Wins One With a River Bet

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Daniel Negreanu on Day 2
Daniel Negreanu on Day 2

We heard no table talk coming from Daniel Negreanu's direction, which had to mean "Kid Poker" was involved in a hand.

Sure enough, Negreanu was playing the turn with the board reading {4-Spades}{8-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. After his opponent checked, Negreanu fired away with a bet of 12,400, and the the other player called to see the {7-Diamonds} drop in on the river.

Another tap of the table by his opponent induced a bet of 24,000 by Negreanu, which was enough to force the fold. Negreanu's stack has been swinging a bit lately, but after this last hand he has things moving in the right direction as the money bubble nears.

Give a Little Bit

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jonathan Little on Day 2
Jonathan Little on Day 2

Jonathan Little just claimed a massive pot after forcing Chris Klodnicki to an extremely difficult decision on the river.

The board read {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Spades} by the turn, and both players checked to see the {A-Diamonds} fall on the river.

After Klodnicki led out for 25,000, Little announced himself all in, putting Klodnicki's last 95,000 or so chips at risk if he elected to call.

Calmly eating his All American Dave dish, Klodnicki tanked for more than five minutes while pondering his next move, even whispering "ace-five or ace-nine?" to himself a few times while he assessed the situation.

Eventually, Klodnicki made the call, and when Little revealed the {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts} his initial suspicions were confirmed. Just like that, Klodnicki hit the rail short of a cash, while Little regained some momentum after entering Day 2 as the chip leader.

Waxman Ends Baldwin

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Matt Waxman Got the Better of Eric Baldwin in the Latest Encounter
Matt Waxman Got the Better of Eric Baldwin in the Latest Encounter

Matt Waxman opened to 4,000 from under the gun, before Eric Baldwin raised to 9,200 from the big blind. Waxman thought for a minute, before making the call, as both players saw the flop come down {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. Baldwin threw out a continuation bet of 8,200, which was called after another short pause from Waxman, as the {A-Diamonds} made its way to the turn.

Baldwin now went into the tank, before throwing out a bet of 21,200, all whilst Waxman was staring him down. With the bet in the middle, Waxman looked over to the board, and made the call, as the {J-Diamonds} completed the board. Baldwin would again think for a minute, before reaching for all his chips, and sliding them into the middle.

Waxman grunted as the bet went into the middle, throwing himself back into his chair.

“What’s wrong with you man?” said Waxman, not too happy about the river bet.

Waxman would again ask Baldwin a question, before repeating his name several times, trying to get an answer or response, as Baldwin sat there motionless.

The tank lasted almost five minutes before Waxman finally made the call as Baldwin tabled his {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

“Sorry, I had you,” said Waxman, tabling his {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for the nut-flush.

“Wow! I wanted you to call,” said a surprised Baldwin, as he stood up from the table and walked towards the rail.

Waxman sat there raking in the pot, before saying, “I don’t know how he ever has the {Q-Diamonds} there.” “I just had to see his cards.”

Negreanu Makes the Perfect Read, Eriquezzo Makes Better Bluff

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Daniel Negreanu is Putting on a Show for the Railbirds Here on Day 2
Daniel Negreanu is Putting on a Show for the Railbirds Here on Day 2

A hand just went down that thrilled the railbirds, and it gave Ryan Eriquezzo's heart a little jolt too.

Playing a heads-up pot against Daniel Negreanu, Eriquezzo responded to an opening raise of 4,300 by "Kid Poker" with a three-bet to 12,200.

"How much more does he want?," Negreanu asked the dealer, before plunking his calling chips into the pot.

Negreanu quickly checked when the {10-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop hit the board, and Eriquezzo opted for a bet of 11,100. Negreanu was not impressed, however, and he raised it up to 27,100. After Eriquezzo called, the turn came {J-Spades}, and that's when things became interesting.

With the straight and flush draws both getting there on the turn, Negreanu elected to lead out for 31,000, and Eriquezzo immediately moved all in over the top.

"What a dirty card," shot Negreanu, as he clapped the cushion on the table. "That's a pretty sick turn."

Negreanu then asked for a count, and after determining that he would need to risk 65,300 more, he went into the tank to calculate all of the factors evident only to a player like Daniel Negreanu.

"This is so stupid, I might fold the best hand here," he said while mulling his options. "You seem like the type to do that with aces, and the ace of spades."

Eriquezzo sat still as a stone during Negreanu's interrogation, even as a massage attendant dutifully rubbed his back and shoulders, trying his best to avoid giving the hand reading master any additional information.

"I don't think I'm folding here," said Negreanu, continuing an internal monologue but delivering it to an audience of spectators and fellow players. "But, you could have ace-king with a spade, and you'll still get there some of the time."

Eventually, despite it appearing to all the world that Negreanu was poised to call, his hand went soaring into the muck.

"Whew!," said Eriquezzo, exhaling in relief while showing the {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for a perfectly executed semi-bluff. "It looked like you were never folding there."

"Nice hand," offered Negreanu, shaking his head seemingly to confirm his initial suspicions, and to chide himself for not pulling the trigger. "I thought you might have something like that."
