Bruno KO'd

C'est la vie, Bruno
C'est la vie, Bruno
In the last hand before dinner, Bruno Fitoussi fell victim to Finnish chess champion, Tomi Nyback.

Fittoussi raised it up with aces and committed half his stack on jack high flop and called the rest when Nyback put him in. Nyback flopped top two pair that held up to bust the formidable Frenchman.

Mizzi Chips Away at Friberg

Sorel Mizzi opened for 8,000 from the cutoff and Erik Friberg called from the button. The flop was {J-Clubs} {9-Spades} {4-Clubs}. Mizzi slid out a 20,000 bet, leaving himself 21,500 behind. Friberg called. The turn came the {3-Clubs} and Mizzi moved all in. Friberg folded and Mizzi picked up a nice pot.

Mizzi Doubles Through Friberg, Cracks Aces

Sorel Mizzi limped in for 3,000, and Erik Friberg raised to 13,000. With the action folded back around to Mizzi, he declared a pot-sized reraise. Friberg immediately moved all in and Mizzi called.

Friberg: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {8-Spades} {9-Spades}

Mizzi: {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {8-Clubs}

The flop came down {K-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {5-Spades}, Mizzi snapping off Friberg's aces as he hit his set. The turn was the {3-Hearts} , the river was the {Q-Hearts} and Mizzi doubled up to 158,500. Friberg was left on 103,000

Early Observations

Put your knives back in the draw, it would take a chainsaw to cut the tension here! On my table, Allen Cunningham, Alex Kravchenko and Stephen Kjaerstad are eerily silent, with most of the table talk deriving from the mouth of Neil Channing. At one point, Channing took the conversation kicking and screaming into the world of food, with Joe Beevers offering up the following gem of culinary trivia: "Did you know, there are more Indian restaurants in the UK than the whole of India?"

Meanwhile, Theo Jorgensen appears to be the most aggressive player at the table, picking up the blinds preflop on two consecutive hands. Just before I left, Beevers led out for 7,000 on a {Q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades} board (the flop had been checked around), before folding to a reraise of 27,000 from Jorgenssen.

"How about a last longer with me and Donnacha?" suggested an observant Channing. "I'm a huge favorite to bust first," replied Jorgensen declining the offer.

"Timex" Recharged

Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald
Mike "Timex" McDonald just took a significant pot from Shaun Deeb that bumped him up to approximately 136,000 in chips.

Deeb opened with a raise to 7,500 from UTG+1. McDonald called from the button, as did David Penly from the big blind.

The flop came down {3-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} and Penly checked to Deeb, who made a continuation bet of 18,000. McDonald called and Penly opted to let the two young guns battle it out.

The turn brought the {6-Hearts} and Deeb immediately checked to McDonald, who checked behind.

The last card off the deck was the {A-Diamonds} and Deeb checked once more, allowing McDonald to bet 32,500. Deeb made a quick call and McDonald revealed the {A-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} for a full house. Deeb mucked.

"I suck for checking the turn," Deeb said after the hand. "I had the nuts -- king-jack (of hearts)."

"I think that's the biggest pot I've won all tournament," said McDonald, as he stacked up his new chips -- 136,000 of them in all.

"...and you had to suck out to get it," Deeb fired back. Deeb dropped to a still-manageable 190,000 in chips after the hand.

Deeb Killing Time...

Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb
"Timex," that is. One hand after Mike McDonald won his biggest pot of the tournament, Shaun Deeb recaptured his lost chips and then some with the elimination of his young counterpart.

Deeb opened the pot with another preflop raise and upon seeing this, McDonald remarked, "How many chips do I want to win this hand?" McDonald made the call and saw the flop come {2-Clubs} {9-Spades} {K-Clubs}.

Deeb then made a continuation bet of about 13,000, according to his estimations, and McDonald responded by raising the pot. Holding {Q-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} {6-Spades}, Deeb responded with a raise of his own, unknowingly putting McDonald to a decision for the rest of his chips.

McDonald made the call and turned over {A-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} {10-Spades}. Needing a club, a queen, an ace or a ten to stay alive, McDonald watched as the board blanked out {8-Spades}, {9-Hearts}, clinching the pot for Deeb.

Rough math would indicate that Shaun should have just over 300,000 in chips at the moment, but we'll get a better count after he finishes stacking the chips.
