Layne Flack had a good day at the office

A total of 79 players made it through eight one-hour levels today, and will restart at 2:00 PM tomorrow with the aim of making history by making a World Series of Poker final table.

From what we could see at the frantic end of play bagging up period, Shawn Buchanon leads the way with 61,800 chips. John Monnette (43,000), Layne Flack (34,300), and Josh Arieh (33,100) all come back with healthy stacks and will be happy with their progress. Jean-Robert Bellande was down to around 2,000 chips in the last level but managed to spin that up to 25,200 at play's end.

Bill Chen (13,200), Richard Ashby (12,000), and Marvin Rettenmaier (2,000) all had bad last levels and were clearly frustrated with their late progress, but at least they're still in.

The same cannot be said for Doyle and Todd Brunson, Shaun Deeb, Vannesa Selbst, David "Viffer" Peat, Daniel Negreanu and Andy Bloch who were amongst many marquee players who failed to advance to day two.

Rettenmaier Mad to Bluff Chen

Bill Chen opened to 1,000 from the cut-off. Marvin Rettenmaier and Allen Kessler both called out of the blinds.

Chen and Rettenmaier both drew two and Kessler drew three. Chen's 500 bet was called by both players and each player drew one less than they did the last round. Now Rettenmaier led for 1,000 and only Chen called. Rettenmaier stood pat and Chen drew one before he called another 1,000 from the German.

"You got it," said Rettenmaier and mucked. Chen opened {3-} {2-} {8-} {4-} {10-} .

Jean-Robert Bellande is down to 2,100 after he had a really strong hand but lost out to two players in a four-way pot where two players were all in.

His {5-} {3-} {4-} {2-} {8-} was beaten by {6-} {4-} {7-} {2-} {5-} and {7-} {4-} {2-} {5-} {3-} .

"WOW," he bellowed, not quite believing what he was seeing.

Bakes' Stack Rising

David "Bakes" Baker has moved tables after his table broke in the orange section, and he's chipping up just as well over here.

The small blind raised into his big blind and he called before both drew two. Baker bet and the small blind check-called. On the next draw round the small drew two again and Baker only the one. The small blind wanted to hang around and check-called a 1,000 bet before both stood pat.

Baker went for another 1,000 bet, was called, and opened {2-} {6-} {7-} {3-} {4-} . The small blind mucked.
