$1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Low: End of Day 1

Five hundred and forty-four brave souls ventured into the Brazilia Room (some stopping in at the Amazon Room incorrectly) and entered this, the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi/Low event. Better known as stud-8, this is a game of halved and quartered pot odds, and lots and lots of split pots.

Many of the late entries in this game were recent bust-outs from other events, including Day 2 of the $50,000 HORSE event. Chris Ferguson, Hoyt Corkins and Tony G raced over from that event during this event's first break, just in time to take a seat at the same table. They wouldn't play together long, as their newly-minted table was one of the first to break.

When the dust settled at around 2:30 a.m. Pacific time, 117 players remained to fight it out in Day 2. Among them are big names such as Tony G, David Singer, Phil Hellmuth, and Men "The Master" Nguyen. All of them return at 3 p.m. Pacific to play down to a single table of eight. Fifty-six places pay. Everyone is likely praying that this Day 2 does not approach the 17 hours of the $5,000 Stud-8 Championship earlier this month.

See you back at 3 p.m. Pacific for all the action!

Live Poker is so Rigged

Bob Feduniak and Berry Johnston got involved in a pot just as we were ending the night. After fifth street, Johnston's chips were all in the middle. He opened {J-Hearts} {3-Hearts} / {J-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {2-Spades} for a pair of jacks; Feduniak had {A-Spades} {6-Diamonds} / {3-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} for aces up. On sixth street, Johnston caught the {J-Clubs} for three jacks; Feduniak caught the {3-Spades} for threes full of aces.

Both players squeezed the river, with Feduniak flipping the {A-Hearts} for aces full. Johnston had only one out left in the deck -- the case jack. He hit it, pulling the {J-Spades} to make four jacks. He doubles up to 8,200.

"Seat Open!"

As the last minutes tick off the tournament clock in the Brasilia Room, players still continue to bust. For many of these players, doubling up or busting is far preferable to coming back tomorrow afternoon with a teeny stack.

Chip Getting in on the Act

Chip Jett picked the right time to make a wheel. All in after fourth street against Phil Hellmuth and one other player, Jett made an ace-to-five straight against Hellmuth's aces and jacks to scoop the pot and triple up. He remains short, but has a bit more breathing room.

Not to Be Outdone...

John Phan, fresh off of winning two gold bracelets in a week, is making his own bid for the overnight chip lead. He recently made two pair, aces and tens, against one opponent showing a board of {6-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {8-Spades}. That opponent never opened his hole cards after Phan showed {A-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} / {K-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {8-Clubs} / {10-Clubs}.

Phan is now up to about 30,000 in chips.

Traniello Scoops Again

Marco Traniello is making a bid to end the day as the chip leader. In a recent pot against one opponent, Traniello came up with the best high and the best low when his board came {8-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {8-Spades} to make an ace-high flush for high and a smooth eight for low. His chip stack now stands at approximately 32,000.

Winding Down

With less than an hour to go in the day, things are starting to wind down here in the Brasilia Room. Only 20 tables remain in play; the remaining players have slowed down the play and seem to content to sit on their stacks and come back fresh tomorrow afternoon.
