Day-end Chip Counts Released; Ivey Takes Lead

With a small surge at the very end of the day's action, Phil Ivey edged past Amit Makhija and into the lead when all the chips were bagged and officially tallied. Ivey's late push carried him up to 175,500 in chips, just ahead of Amit Makhija at 161,100. The overall top ten at the end of Day 1 action is as follows:

After ten levels of play, a lunch and dinner break, Day 1 of Event #5 has finally come to a close. We have about 106 players remaining in the field with play scheduled to pick back up tomorrow at 2pm PDT.

There are still several professional players left in this small field including Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Michael Binger, Billy Baxter, and Clonie Gowan.

Amit Makhija Knocks Out Alex Kostritsyn

After some preflop raising and a flop of Alex Kostritsyn and Amit Makhija traded raises until all Kostritsyn's chips were in the pot. His pocket eights trailed Makhija's pocket Kings and when the fell on the turn and the on the river Kostritsyn was eliminated just as Day One ended.

Marco Johnson Eliminates Maria Mayrinck

And in news that saddens the whole PokerNews crew, Marco Johnson has eliminated Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck. Maridu pushed in late position with and Johnson called in the small blind with . The board ran out and Maridu's tournament came to a close at the very end of Day One.

Hellmuth Finds a Tell

Preflop, Phil Hellmuth made it 2,500 to go. The action was folded around to the big blind, who looked at Phil and said, "Phil, you've been stealing my big blind all night...I'm all-in."

After thinking about it for a moment, Phil turned over his cards to show pocket sixes. "I mean, you're basically telling me you have pocket aces. Thank you."

Marco Johnson Makes a Late Charge

And hitting a two-outer on the river doesn't hurt. Johnson and another player with a fairly deep stack got all their chips in the middle after the turn with the board reading . Johnson check-called the all in bet only to find that his pocket Aces had been outflopped by his opponent's pocket threes. But on the river Johnson spiked the to take down the pot and build his stack to 132,000.

Jacob Doubled Through

Alex Jacob called an opponent's all-in pitting his pocket sevens against pocket kings. Jacob's pocket pair failed to improve, leaving him with less than 61,000 with only five minutes left in the day.

Double Up for Maridu

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry. It's the first ace I've seen in forever," Maridu told her opponent after the hand. Maridu moved all in preflop after a raise from an early position player. He made the call and showed pocket jacks against Maridu's A-7. The flop of made a solid top two-pair for Maridu as her opponent failed to improve. After the hand, Maridu is up to over 23,000.

Marco Johnson Eliminates Burt Boutin

With the board reading Marco Johnson checked, Burt Boutin moved all in, and Johnson called. His pocket Tens led Boutin's pocket fours, and the sealed Boutin's fate and brought an end to his night.
