Day 1a Wrapped Up; Hansimikali Surges Into Lead!

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante
Chip Leader Manuel Hansimikali
Chip Leader Manuel Hansimikali

Day 1a of the PokerStars.net APPT Sydney Main Event has come to a close!

Kicking off the first flight with a small, but highly-skilled 75-player field, it would be reigning champion Aaron Benton uttering those immortal words of shuffle up and deal to get the green-felt battle into first gear.

Australian online players Sam 'MILF ISLAND' Rotar, Bradley 'BaZa88' Bower, Ricky 'rickwaa' Kroesen and Kristian Lunardi all found themselves on the rail along with Australasian tournament stalwarts Mike Ivin, Tino Lechich and Greg Cook.

As play came to a close after seven testing levels of poker, it would be Australian Manuel Hansimikali leading the remaining forty players with an amassed 136,600. Snapping on his heels include Reza Vakili (129,800), Brent Bibby (129,300) and Jai Kemp (108,600), while the likes of David Saab (94,900), Jonathan Karamalikis (83,500), Joel Dodds (61,900), Billy 'The Croc' Argyros (54,200) and reigning champion Benton (59,400).

With the $15,300 High Rollers in progress still - and attracting the cream of the crop of Australasian poker players - the next two day-one flights will not only be filled with more players, but also some that include the likes of Joe Hachem, Jeffrey Lisandro and Daniel Negreanu.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will again be on the floor tomorrow providing exclusive live coverage from the Star City Poker Room and Day 1b of the PokerStars.net APPT Sydney Main Event!

Two Pair Folded to Dodds' Bet

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante
Strong play, mate
Strong play, mate

Joel Dodds raised to 1,800 from late position and got two callers, one on the button and one in the small blind, before the flop came down {A-Spades}{J-Spades}{3-Spades}. After the small blind checked, Dodds fired 3,600. The button called and the small blind folded.

The turn brought another spade with the {4-Spades} falling on board. Dodds fired 7,700 and his opponent folded, showing that he was laying down the {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for two pair. Dodds didn't show and won the pot to move to 56,000 in chips.

No Ace for Wing

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

Facing a raise under the gun to 2,000, Tom Wing three-bet to 5,800 from the hijack.

With the action back on the preflop aggressor, he moved all in and Wing instantly made the call.

Wing: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Opponent: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Unfortunately for Wing, the board ran out {5-Hearts}{8-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} to see the short-stacked opponent double while Wing slipped to 25,000 in chips.

Raemin Alexander
Raemin Alexander

Raemin Alexander found himself all in preflop against David Saab.

Alexander: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Saab: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

The final board was spread {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} to see Saab spike one of his overs to ensure Alexander was unable to finish the day, and consequently forced to the rail as Saab soars to just over 100,000 in chips.

Go Bibby, Go

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

The board read {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} on the turn in a pot between Brent Bibby and one opponent. Bibby had bet, his opponent raised, Bibby went all in and his opponent called. Bibby held the {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} for the current nuts while his opponent tabled the drawing-dead {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. The river completed the board with the {4-Diamonds} and gave Bibby a full house. He won the pot, eliminated the player and moved to a field-leading 140,000 in chips.

Jeney Drops One

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

Kristina Jeney fired 2,100 on the turn with the board reading {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Her opponent raised to 5,000 and Jeney made the call.

The river brought the {10-Hearts} and paired the board. It also completed a possible royal flush draw. Jeney check-folded to a bet of 10,000 from her opponent and slipped back to 40,000 in chips.
