The Final Table is Set

Teodor Caraba leads the way
Teodor Caraba leads the way
Just about seven hours after the final 24 players sauntered into the tournament room, the field has been reduced to the requisite eight, and tomorrow's final table has been set.

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier was on the hunt to become the first winner of multiple EPT Main Events, but his bid for another level of poker immortality came to a disappointing end just moments ago. Everyone in the spectators gallery and on media row were certain the Elk could pull off an unlikely double up after running his ace-queen into pocket aces, but it simply was not meant to be. ElkY's departure in ninth place leaves just Mike "Timex" McDonald in contention for a second EPT win.

Leading up to the unofficial final table of nine, the play was blistering fast and the action remarkably furious. By the time two levels had come and gone, ten players had made the walk of shame to the payout desk, looking for a check to help ease their post-elimination blues. The big names held on a bit longer, but Bruno Fitoussi, Freddy Deeb, and Alexia Portal would all fall just a few places shy of a spot in tomorrow's seating chart.

Teodor Caraba came into the day with the chip lead, and he'll be feeling that same wonderful feeling when he returns tomorrow. His stack of nearly 7 million puts him well out in front of the peloton, but it's not a runaway victory just yet. The final table is packed with danger, including the aforementioned McDonald, Craig "HU4ROLLZ" Bergeron, and Mr. Peter Eastgate, who rode the short stack admirably for much of the day.

The final table battle will commence at high noon GMT+1 on Monday, and it figures to be a good show. We'll be right here to catch every bad beat, busted flush, and broken dream as we crown a champion at the EPT Deauville.

Until then, bonsoir and goodnight!

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier Eliminated in 9th Place (€51,500)

ElkY - 9th place
ElkY - 9th place
Michael Fratty opened for 160,000 in the hijack and chip daddy Teodor Caraba called in the cutoff. Over to ElkY on the button, and with a wave of his hand, he announced all in. Fratty folded - but Caraba made the call. Uh-oh, ElkY...

ElkY: {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}
Caraba: {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds}

Flop: {8-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {4-Spades} - ElkY found himself a flush draw. For the benefit of the cameras, there was a long, painful pause before the turn.

Turn: {9-Hearts} - now ElkY had a gutshot draw too. More pausing.

River: {2-Diamonds}

No cigar. The popular Team PokerStars Pro: France will not be gracing the official EPT final table in his home country, as he exits in 9th. Chip leader Teodor Caraba is now HUGE chip leader, on almost 7 million. Ladies and gents, we have our final table.

Chip Leaders Clash, Briefly

Stephane Albertini opened for 110,000 and Jake Cody called behind. Over to Teodor Caraba in the small blind, who counted out a reraise and pushed it across the line - 355,000 in all. Big blind ElkY and original raiser Albertini folded pretty sharpish, but Cody disappeared into the tank...

...And then folded. We remain nine-handed.

It's Apparently a Flop Game

It's been awhile since we've seen a showdown to report, but at least we got to a few flops finally.

ElkY raised preflop and Michael Fratty called from the big blind.

Flop: {K-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {3-Hearts}

Fratty bet out 115,000 and seemed completely surprised when ElkY repopped to 310k. After some thought, he gave it up, shipping ElkY his first pot in a while.

Next hand, Fratty defended his small blind from a raise by Mike McDonald. The flop came {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} and both checked. Fratty took a stab at the pot after the {A-Diamonds} on the turn, and McDonald folded.

We Thought This Would Go Faster

To be honest, we may have rather jumped the gun on this. It turns out that whichever member of casino staff was in charge of providing the official chip counts when they went to one table rather, er, confused a couple things, and Peter Eastgate was never quite as short as they told us he was. And everyone really, really wants to make final table. So, we could be quite some time yet...

These are the current counts:

Seat 1: Claudius Secara - 850,000
Seat 2: Jake Cody - 4,825,000
Seat 3: Michael Fratty - 1,700,000

Seat 5: Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier - 870,000

Seat 7: Craig Bergeron - 3,385,000
Seat 8: Stephane Albertini - 3,925,000
