Event #27: $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship

Day 2 Completed

Matthew Gallin Leads Final 14 of the $10K Limit Hold'em Championship

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 0 ante
Matthew Gallin Day 2 Chip Leader (575,000)
Matthew Gallin Day 2 Chip Leader (575,000)

Day 2 of the $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship saw 106 players return for their shot at a World Series of Poker gold bracelet and the $378,642 first-place prize. Only 18 players were slated to be paid, meaning 88 players were destined to go home disappointed. It took all ten levels to reach the money, but the bubble finally burst. By day’s end, only 14 players remained, with Matthew Gallin emerging as the Day Two chip leader (575,000).

Not everyone had as good a day as Gallin. Daniel Negreanu began the day as the monster chip lead, but as the blinds continued to rise, lady luck turned against him. Negreanu’s downfall came with around 27 players remaining. After losing a big hand to Steve Landfish on the river, Negreanu uncharacteristically shot up, accidentally tipping his chair over, and slammed his Beats headphones on the ground. Pieces from the headphones flew as the tournament floor grew eerily quiet. It was clear Negreanu was extremely frustrated. Regardless, Negreanu remained silent as he picked up his chair and sat down to rebuild his stack of 27,000.

Unfortunately, things only got worse for “Kid Poker” as he dropped to just 20,000. He decided to commit most of that preflop after Tam Hang raised in early position. The flop came out {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{q-Spades}, and Negreanu got the last of his money in, with Hang making the call.

Negreanu: {q-Clubs}{a-Spades}
Hang: {10-Spades}{9-Spades}

Negreanu needed to dodge a king or an eight, and the turn brought the {j-Spades}, giving Negreanu a full house. Negreanu started to say "well that does it" before he stopped himself, realizing that Hang still had straight flush outs. Sure enough, the {k-Spades} hit the river, and Negreanu nearly drop kicked the table jumping out of his seat. A frustrated Negreanu let out a few words of disbelief before walking away from the tournament and out of the room.

Other pros who ultimately fell short of the money were Josh Arieh, Shawn Buchanan, Maria Ho, Jeff Shulman, Alexander Kostritsyn, Brock Parker, Chau Giang, David “ODB” Baker, Vladimir Shchemelev, and Jennifer Harman. Likewise, Team PokerStars Pros Andre Akkari (Brazil), Humberto Brenes (Costa Rica), Bill Chen (Friend of PokerStars), Pat Pezzin (Canada), Jason Mercier (USA), Nacho Barbero (Argentina), and Greg Debora (Canada) all failed to make Day Three.

Some players who managed to sneak in the money included Michael Schneider (18th- $20,274), Ian Johns (17th- $20,274), Mikhail Smirnov (16th- $20,274), and Carlos Mortensen (15th- $24,060).

While many failed to survive, a few managed to thrive. Last year’s runner-up Daniel Idema made it to Day Two, as did Richard Brodie, Hoyt Corkins, Nick Schulman, Isaac Haxton, Justin “Boosted J” Smith, and Barry Greenstein. Here is a look at the Day Three seating assignments, chip counts, and a chart documenting this event’s history:

Corkins Doubles on Last Hand of Night

Hoyt Corkins and Domencio Denotaristefani each put in four bets preflop, and Corkins was getting short as they took a flop of {10-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. Corkins got the last of his chips in, and he was well ahead of Denotaristefani.

Corkins: {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Denotaristefani: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

The turn and river provided no miracles, coming {2-Clubs} and {9-}, and Corkins collected a last second double up.

Carlos Mortensen Eliminated in 15th Place ($24,060)

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen

Hoyt Corkins raised from under the gun and Carlos Mortensen re-raised on the button. Steve Landfish four-bet from the big blind and Corkins capped the betting. Mortensen called all in and Landfish called as well as the players saw a {8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} flop. Landfish check-called Corkins’ bet and the action was the same on the {5-Spades} turn. Landfish led out when the {K-Diamonds} hit the river and Corkins made the call. Landfish announced “nuts” and turned over {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for the nut flush. Corkins frustratingly turned over yet another pair of {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} while Mortensen showed {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades} before he hit the rail and the Landfish rollercoaster continued.

Mortensen Crippled

On a flop of {9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, Carlos Mortensen checked, Domenico Denotaristefani bet, Mortensen raised, and Denotaristefani made the call.

When the dealer burned and turned the {J-Diamonds}, Mortensen check-called a bet, which he also did on the {5-Hearts} river. Mortensen revealed {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} for a flopped set but it was no good as Denotaristefani showed {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for a straight.

Brodie Doubles Through Woods

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 0 ante

We came to the table with the flop reading {10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}, and Richard Brodie and Darren Woods heads up. Woods checked, and Brodie bet. Woods raised, and Brodie called. The turn came the {10-Clubs}, and Woods bet out. Brodie called, and the river came the {4-Clubs}. Woods bet out one more time, and Brodie slammed down a call, leaving himself just 3,000 behind. Woods said "good call" and Brodie threw down {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} for a counterfeited full house. Brodie took a deepppp sigh of relief, and took in the chips to up his stack back up to 153,000.

The Aces are Moving on Over to Table 286

We caught up with the action on a {10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop where Richard Brodie check-called a Barry Greenstein bet. The action was the same on the {6-Clubs} turn and {10-Diamonds} river and Greenstein turned over {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} for pocket rockets. Brodie could only muck as his stack took a hit while Greenstein’s grew.

Schulman’s Draw Gets There?

Nick Schulman raised in the cutoff and Carlos Mortensen re-raised from the small blind. Schulman made the call as the players saw a {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop and Mortensen led out. Schulman raised and Mortensen made it three bets which got called. Mortsenen bet again when the {6-Hearts} hit the turn and Schulman paid to see the {A-Hearts} on the river. Mortensen checked this time and Schulman bet. Mortensen made the call and was shown the {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} of Schulman for the nut flush draw on the flop that turned into top pair on the river. Mortensen mucked and Schulman raked in the pot.

Mikhail Smirnov Eliminated in 16th Place ( $20,274)

Mikhail Smirnov
Mikhail Smirnov

Mikhail Smirnov and Darren Woods got in a raising war that saw Smirnov getting the last of his chips in preflop. Woods made the call, and Smirnov did not like what he saw when the cards were flipped up.

Smirnov: {k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Woods: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

The board ran out {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Spades}, and Woods didn't have to sweat, as he collected the bounty and sent Smirnov to the rail.
