Global Poker Index: O’Dwyer Again Leads as WPT Seminole Hard Rock Finishes Boost Several
Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player’s results over six half-year periods. There was a bit of movement over the past week at the top of the Global Poker Index overall rankings where Steve O’Dwyer continues to maintain the top position for a 16th-straight week.
Former No. 1 Byron Kaverman dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since February 2015, slipping from No. 2 to No. 12. That helped several players move up a place or two, with Stephen Chidwick reentering the list at No. 10.
Most of the movement came from earlier scores being affected the the GPI’s aging factor and not from recent finishes. The only new tournament scores of significance among this group were made by Nick Petrangelo and Anthony Zinno.
Petrangelo finished fourth in the $25,500 buy-in World Poker Tour Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino High Roller a week ago, with the points resulting from that helping him move up from No. 7 to No. 5. Fedor Holz cashed in 13th in the same event, but the points weren’t enough to affect his GPI standing.
Meanwhile Zinno took 11th in the $10K WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown Finale won by David “Chino” Rheem to help him climb from No. 10 to No. 7.

There were 13 new names in the newest top 300, with David Malka ranked the highest of these newcomers after moving all of the way up from No. 328 to No. 167 for winning that aforementioned $25,500 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino High Roller event. Malka topped a field of 94 players to win a $658,000 first prize, enabling him to join the top 300 for the first time in his career.
Of the others on this list of newcomers, four are appearing in the GPI top 300 for the first time this week.
William Foxen cashed three times during the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown festival to move up from No. 326 to No. 232 and make his top 300 debut. Two cashes by Brent Roberts at the Seminole also enabled him to make the list for the first time as he moved from No. 427 to No. 269. And Jan Schwippert cashed three times in side events at Seminole including winning one to inch up from No. 301 and No. 296 and finally make the list.
A cash also by Matt Bond in the Poker Night in America Main Event at the Choctaw Poker Series gave him the points to go from No. 324 to No. 267, marking his first entry into the top 300.

Malka’s jump was a big one, but there were others enjoying even bigger GPI gains this week with Yevgeniy Timoshenko making the largest leap of those within the top 300 from No. 689 to No. 291.
Last week Timoshenko final tabled both the $25,500 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown (finishing sixth) and the WPT Tournament of Champions that also took place at the Seminole (finishing eighth), earning big points in both to make his upward move. Timoshenko’s highest previous GPI ranking has been No. 30 in July 2013.

Finally, just looking at the top 300 players, Asher Conniff dropped the most over the last seven days after going from No. 215 down to No. 281.

All eyes are on Monaco currently where the European Poker Tour Grand Final has already gotten underway and essentially all of the top-ranked GPI players are in action.
