Day 1a Started

It's Time For The Main Event

ANZPT Grand Final winner Sam Razavi
ANZPT Grand Final winner Sam Razavi

After two weeks of poker action in the Crown poker room it’s time for the Main Event in downtown Melbourne during season five of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour! Many big events were already played with the $10,000 State of Origin as one of the main features this week. This event was ultimately won by Grant Levy and his New South Wales teammates. They split up the $35,000 first place prize, on top of the individual bonus for winning the first of two shoot out tables.

Many of the top pros who competed in the State of Origin championship are also expected to play the ANZPT Main Event. Jackie Glazier, who played on the Victoria team, will be among many of the Day 1A players. This $2,200+$300 Main Event will have two starting days, a second day of play on Sunday before ultimately the final table on Monday.

Last August the ANZPT Grand Final was also played here in Melbourne, and British pro Sam Razavi claimed the A$326,125 first place prize. Razavi will be back this weekend to make another run, as will one of the local favorites in Tom Grigg who placed third las August. We also expect to see the Hachem brothers, Kristian Lunardi, Liam O'Rourke and many other national and international top players.

Make sure to follow PokerNews.com for all your live updates! Play starts at 12:10PM AEDST.

With the button in seat 3 play has just commenced. Players are slowly taking their seats, as many tables started off short handed. Let's take a look who's here!

More Known Players

We scouted out some more recognizable players in today's field. Among others we've spotted Patrick Healy who finished fifth in this year's Aussie Millions Main Event. The 2011 ANZPT Adelaide winner Octavian Voegele is seated at the same table.

The females are also well represented today, as Heidi May and Errolyn Strang joined the party. May took A$25,000 for her second place finish in yesterday's 6-Max event and also competed for the Tasmanian team in the State of Origin championship. Strang had her biggest result back in 2011 when she won the Sydney Poker Championship for $119,542.

Three Aussie Stars

Another look around the room provided us with three more very interesting players with big results. David Gorr has the biggest result of the three, as he took down the 2011 Aussie Million Main Event worth A$2,000,000.

Andrew Hinrichsen is the sole Australian World Series of Poker Europe bracelet winner. He won the 2011 €1,000 event in Cannes, France for €148,030.

Last but not least we've spotted Tom Grigg. Grigg has three APPT Main Event final tables under his belt. His best result was a fifth place finish in the 2009 APPT Sydney when he cashes A$130,680.

These three players have proven themselves over the years, and will be a force to be reckoned with.

McKenzie Comes Out Firing

Four players invested 350 in order to see a {Q-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Hearts} flop. The big blind, and a player in early position, checked to Jesse McKenzie who bet 775. The player on the button was his only caller.

On the turn the {3-Clubs} hit and quickly McKenzie threw out 1,700. His opponent did not hesitate and called his bet.

The river brought out the {9-Hearts} and both players checked. McKenzie announced he had king-high, and mucked when his opponent turned over {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. McKenzie took a little hit, but with this slow structure it's not a big deal yet.

Glazier Puts Big Dent in Grigg's Stack

Jackie Glazier has taken her seat to the direct left of Tom Grigg, and immediately she referred to the APPT Main Event in which he busted her. Today things are looking up for Glazier, who took a sizable chunk out of her opponent's stack.

When we arrived on the scene Glazier had put out a raise to 900 from the small blind which was called two players. One player was in middle position, and Grigg flicked in the extra chips on top of the 350 that was in front of him.

The flop brought out {7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{J-Clubs} and the action was checked to Grigg who bet 1,500. Glazier check-raised to 3,500 and the third player folded. Grigg called creating heads up action on the turn.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and Glazier threw out a hefty 4,600-chip bet. Grigg gave it some thought before he made the call. On the river the {9-Spades} hit and both players checked rather quickly.

Glazier confidently turned over {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, and Grigg took another look at his cards before tossing them into the muck. He later claimed to have ace jack without a club.
