Day 1a Completed

Ryall Leads Day 1a of ANZPT Sydney

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante
Tobin Ryall - Day 1a chipleader
Tobin Ryall - Day 1a chipleader

After a huge launching of the fourth season of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour, Day 1a of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event has come to a close.

There were 215 players who started the day, making it a huge field and setting the event on target to easily surpass the 393 players who took part in last year’s event.

Plenty of recognizable faces were among today’s starters including Jonathan Karamalikis, Tom Grigg, David Steicke, Aaron Benton, Daniel Neilson and Andrew Hinrichsen.

While none of the above players managed to make it through the day, there were still a lot of notable players who did manage a Day 2 berth.

The player who finished up in the best shape at the end of Day 1a was Tobin Ryall. A huge effort throughout the day saw Ryall accumulate 138,500 in chips which will easily see them in the top few counts come Saturday.

Joining Ryall at the top of the counts will be Nabil Edgtton (125,100), Gordon Huntly (121,500) and Rhys Gould (119600).

Also returning with plenty of chips on Day 2 will be Mishel Anunu (80,600), Oliver Speidel (70,900), Dan Kelly (70,600) and 2011 ANZPT Sydney champion Michael Kanaan (70,200).

While not in quite as good shape as the above players, Peter Aristidou (52,400), Tony Hachem (48,100), Jackson Zheng (24,000) and Billy Argyros (22,600) will also return with a fighting chance on Day 2.

For the approximately 89 players from Day 1a who will be returning on Day 2 this Saturday, they will have plenty of time to rest tomorrow. For us here on media row and the ANZPT staff it’s a different story. Day 1b is set to begin in just over eight hours’ time at 12.30 pm local time tomorrow and although we may be lacking some sleep, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will again be on the floor providing all the action from the 2012 ANZPT Sydney Main Event.

Stop That Clock

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

The clock has been stopped and the players have been told there will be just four more hands before it is all over for the evening.

Neilson Home Late

It's home late for Daniel Neilson as he has finally succumbed to the rail after nursing a short stack for much of the last couple of levels.

Neilson shoved all in preflop for his last 11,000 holding {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and received two callers. The board then ran out {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} as the two players checked it down. One of the players showed {a-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, enough to send both Neilson's and the other player's cards into the muck.

Rhys Swimming In Gould

Late into the evening and Rhys Gould has emerged as one of the largest stacks in the room after taking down a pot worth more than 100,000 in chips. We didn't catch all the action, but it seemed like all the chips went in on the river of a board showing {k-Hearts}{3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. Gould held {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for a rivered straight, while his opponent held {q-Clubs}{q-Spades} for a rivered set of queens.

The End is Near

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

The tournament staff are currently gathering the chip bags and pens for the upcoming conclusion of the night. There are currently 114 players remaining. Lets so how many that number slips to in the next 20 minutes or so.

Here's Looking At Season Four

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

As you know, this very event that you are following the action in right now is the first stop on the fourth season of the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour.

After this stop in Sydney, there will be a yet-to-be confirmed event in June. After that it will be off to New Zealand for the popular Queenstown Snowfest in July. Then it will be the final stop in Melbourne for the much anticipated Grand Final. See below for the Season IV ANZPT schedule.

Gordon Hunting Chip Lead

When we came to Gordon Huntly's table, there was a board showing {2-Clubs}{6-Spades}{j-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Huntly was in a hand against one opponent.

The opponent was first to act and he checked in front of Huntly. This prompted Huntly to bet 11,000 and it was back on his opponent. The player then moved all in and Huntly snap called.

The dealer then started raking the pot away from Huntly, apparently thinking Huntly had said fold. Huntly tabled his {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for the nuts, and explained that he clearly said call. The other player had already sent his cards into the muck and Huntly took down the pot while saying, "There's too many accents around here!"
