Final Break of the Day

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

The players have been sent on their final 10-minute break of the day.

When the action kicks back off, there will be two more levels before Day 1a is over.

Gubieski One of the Leaders

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Nathan Gubieski is now with the chip leaders after sending a short-stacked opponent to the rail. The action started with a raise from Mike Stecker to 1,350 from the cutoff position. Gubieski three-bet to 2,900 from the small blind, before the third player moved all in from the big blind for a total of 12,225. Stecker got out of the way, but Gubieski gave it some thought before committing to the call.

Gubieski held {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for live cards against his opponent’s {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and improved as the board ran out {4-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Gubieski is now up to 60,000 in chips.

Clark Sends Jean Home

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Kevin Clark is one of New Zealand’s more decorated players with several victories in this poker room among career earnings worth over $200,000. Clark is looking for some success on the ANZPT and he’s on the right track after recently sending early chip leader Jean Tae to the rail in a big clash over on Table 3. The chips went in on a flop of {10-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{6-Spades} with Clark’s pocket jacks holding the lead but looking to fade a few outs as Tae went with {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for the flush draw and overcard.

The turn and river bricked out to leave Tae heading for the rail as Clark is now up to around 35,000 chips.

Stecker Going Strong

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Mike Stecker has been very active on his table as the former ANZPT Adelaide final tablist starts to build a stack.

In a recent pot Stecker called from the big blind after Nathan Gubieski had opened to see a flop of {7-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. Stecker checked and Gubieski bet 1,100. Stecker responded with a check-raise, adding another 1,675 on top and that was enough to force a fold from Gubieski.

Stecker is up to 30,000 with Gubieski sitting strong on around 45,000.

Rusman Knows These Tables

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Rusman Hussan is no stranger to the SKYCITY Auckland poker room as he used to be on the other side of the felt, dealing the cards. Today he is playing and has managed to accumulate a stack of around 60,000.

We recently watched Hussan call a three-bet preflop against Dean Blatt. On the {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, Blatt led for 3,000 and Hussan made the call. The turn was a {9-Clubs} and this time Blatt checked. Hussan led for 5,700 here and Blatt eventually made the call.

The river was a {2-Diamonds} and both players checked.

At showdown, Hussan showed {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, which was enough to win the pot!

Double Rockets

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Some poker players wait all day long to look down at those elusive pocket aces. Some wait even longer for the opportunity to get them all in preflop.

Two players over on Table 5 here on Day 1a of the ANZPT Auckland Main Event recently got all their chips in preflop and both players shouted out half in despair and half laughing as they revealed their cards.

Yes, you guessed it, both had pocket aces.

One had {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}, while the other held {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}. The board ran out a meaningless {8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{J-Hearts}{9-Spades} and it was a chopped pot.

Flush Turning Raj

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Raj Ramakrishnan was one of the shortest stacks in the room recently, but now has a much healthier stack, courtesy of a double up. Ramakrishnan called a raise preflop and then got his stack of 5,400 in against one opponent on a {q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop.

Ramakrishnan held {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} against {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}.

The turn was a {k-Diamonds}, which gave Ramakrishnan a flush. Ramakrishnan needed to dodge a king or queen on the river and that’s exactly what he did as a {9-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

Auckland Side Event Action

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

While the action kicks on here in the ANZPT Auckland Main Event, we thought we would take a look at some of the side events being offered at SKYCITY Auckland this week.

One of those side events is tonight – a $500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament. That kicks off at 8.00pm, which is around the time today’s action should come a close.

Tomorrow night, at 8.00pm, there is a $550 No Limit Holdem Turbo and that same event will be run at 7.15 pm on Friday evening. Saturday will see a $220 Ladies Event play out from 8.00pm, while there is a $550 Teams Event on Sunday from 1.00pm and a $330 No Limit Holdem Deepstack from 4.30pm Sunday.

Tae Wins a Nice One

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Jean Tae has scooped up a handy pot in a hand against William Han.

It all started with Tae opening it up to 1,100 from early position and with Han being the lone caller from the small blind. On the {5-Clubs}{6-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop, Han check-called a bet of 2,200 and a {7-Diamonds} was dealt on the turn. This time Han check-called a bet of 5,500 and a {j-Clubs} completed the board on the river.

Han once again tapped the table and Tae bet 8,000. Back on Han and he would tank for quite some time before letting his cards hit the muck.

Tae looked like he was going to turn his cards over, but he eventually changed his mind and quietly slide them face down into the muck.
