Sheng Sun Wins APPT9 Macau 50K Freezeout for HK$997,100 (USD$128,598)

Level 20 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

The second and last day of the PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Season 9 HK$50,000 Freezeout at PokerStars LIVE Macau at the City of Dreams saw the final 26 players of an 81-player field return to battle down to a winner.

Only the top 10 spots were paid and the action started fast and furious with 2014 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific Main Event champ Scott Davies, start-of-the-day chip leader Sheng Sun, and Chinese Taipei's Jack Hu being among the most active. Those three players ultimately reached the podium, and it was Sun who emerged victorious to take down the silver trophy and the HK$997,100 (USD$128,598) first-place prize after knocking out both his opponents in quick succession.

Sun had three Hendon Mob entries to his name prior to the win, and all three happened to be third-place finishes. The biggest of them came at the 2012 APT Manila when he took home HK$4,650,000. Obviously he's now got the monkey off his back with a hard earned victory.

Within the first two 60-minute levels, the field was reduced to the last 14 hopefuls and the biggest surprise was surely the elimination of Rajeev Raut. The man from India started Day 2 third in chips, but all of them vanished within the first hour. Meanwhile, Hu and Sun dominated their table and the incredible heater of Davies started after an early hiccup where the American lost with kings to deuces.

Guiseppe Reina, Eddy Liang and Allen Wang then all bowed out in Level 15, and the bubble saw Percy Yung running out of chips as the last player without a payday.

The official final table started eight-handed because Alberto Gomez and Yung Bing Chu were sent to the rail simultaneously on their respective table.

Interestingly, Devan Tang missed the entire first hour of Day 2 and showed up late to run up his remaining five big blinds to more than half a million chips before losing a flip to Davies.

Meng Dian Peng had a kicker problem against Hu to bust in seventh, and then Thomas Ward had to settle for sixth place when his short stack merged with table neighbor Jung Jung Tang. The latter was the last woman in the field and finished in fifth at the hand of Kim Mittendorff.

The Dane was trying to break into the phalanx of his three dominating opponents, but busted if fourth after one of the most spectacular hands of the tournament where Sun's ten-high scooped the pot versus Mittendorff's six-high. A huge hero-call by the Sun made him the clear chip leader at the end of Level 19, and he took out Davies in third and Hu in second within 15 minutes. It obviously also helped that he picked up pocket queens and kings to do so.

We had a fun little chat with the champion Sheng Sun, and talk at length about that memorable hand with ten-high:

The APPT festival in Macau continues for another four days, and on Thursday at 14:00 local time the second starting day of the HK$25,000 Main Event gets underway. Of course the PokerNews live reporting team will be back then to keep you up to date on all the action.

Jack Hu Eliminated in 2nd Place (HK$664,700)

Level 20 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Jack Hu
Jack Hu

The heads-up lasted only a few hands and it was Sheng Sun, who woke up with yet another premium hand. He grabbed some chips and wanted to raise without announcing it. Jack Hu first complained about that to his opponent in Chinese but then happily moved all in to see Sun snap-call:

Sun: {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Hu: {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

The {2-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop made things very clear, even though the {7-Spades} turn provided a possible miracle. Low and behold, it was the {Q-Spades} river that ended the tournament and crowned its champion Sheng Sun. Hu had to settle for second place and received HK$664,700 for his efforts.

Scott Davies Eliminated in 3rd Place (HK$443,100)

Level 20 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Scott Davies
Scott Davies

Back from the break, both Jack Hu and Scott Davies were eager to get their stacks in and the American was the first to give it a try. His shove was snap-called by Sheng Sun and that was bad news for Davies. "You got a pair?" Sun just nodded and the World Series of Poker Asia Pacific Main Event champion needed a lot of help.

Sun: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Davies: {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}

The {10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{K-Clubs} flop bricked and so did the {10-Clubs} turn. Davies asked for the {3-Clubs} but it was the {2-Hearts} instead. So close but yet so far. The American still laughed and heartily shook the hands of his two opponents, leaving the tournament area with a smile on the face. He takes home HK$443,100 and the heads-up seems very one-sided at the start.

Kim Wittendorff Eliminated in 4th Place (HK$369,300)

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Kim Wittendorff
Kim Wittendorff

Within two hands, Kim Wittendorff put everything into it and crashed out with massive style and six-high! In the first hand, Scott Davies three-bet to 110,000 out of the small blind and Wittendorff called to see a flop of {Q-Spades}{K-Clubs}{9-Spades}. The Dane shoved and that settled things.

But the second hand was surely some masterpiece of fireworks. Davies opened to 40,000 and Sheng Sun called from the button, so did Wittendorff in the small blind. After a flop of {J-Hearts}{8-Spades}{K-Spades}, the Dane check-raised from 55,000 to 200,000 and Sun had quite a decision once again.

"If you have something, just go all in and let's go," the usual tactic to get it in by Wittendorff, who had 334,000 chips behind. Instead, Sun just flat-called with around 500,000 behind and it was sure to turn into a crucial pot.

The {5-Diamonds} on the turn brought the expected shove of Wittendorff and now he wanted his opponent to fold: "Just fold, I got two pair. You still have half a million there and loads of time. Do you really think I gonna risk my tournament on a flush draw?"

Sun replied in English "I don't care about your two pair, I got a draw. I am a fish." With the loud applause of the local rail, Sun indeed made the call and they flipped over their cards.

Wittendorff: {4-Spades}{6-Spades}
Sun: {9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The {3-Diamonds} river bricked off and ten-high was the winner hand of that massive pot and final position for Wittendorff, who takes home HK$369,300 for his fourth place finish.

Jung Jung Tang Eliminated in 5th Place (HK$295,400)

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jung Jung Tang
Jung Jung Tang

Shortly after her double up through Scott Davies, Jung Jung Tang moved all in for roughly 12 big blinds and was called by Kim Wittendorff in the small blind.

Tang: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Wittendorff: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

After the {7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop, Tang asked for a six before realizing the mistake and then cheering for a diamond. Wittendorff wanted the dealer to bring a blank five, but he was also happy about the {4-Hearts} turn and {4-Clubs} river that completed a full house. The last woman in the field has been eliminated in 5th place and takes home HK$295,400 for her efforts.

Thomas Ward Eliminated in 6th Place (HK$258,500)

Level 16 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Thomas Ward
Thomas Ward

In a battle of the two remaining short stacks, Thomas Ward moved all in for around 100,000 chips from the button and Jung Jung Tang did so as well from one seat over in the small blind with slightly more chips.

Ward: {10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Tang: {Q-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The {8-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop left Ward drawing very slim and it was all over after the {A-Diamonds} on the turn. The {2-Diamonds} river was just a formality and the field is now down to six while Ward headed off to the cashier in order to collect HK$258,500 for his efforts.

Meng Dian Peng
Meng Dian Peng

Meng Dian Peng open-shoved for his last 89,000 from the cutoff and Jack Hu quickly called from one seat over to get everyone else out of the way. Peng was again dominated with a weaker kicker, holding the {A-Diamonds}{4-Spades}, while Hu tabled {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. The board ran out {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and that was it for the Chinese in 7th place. He takes home HK$221,600 for his efforts.

Devan Tang Eliminated in 8th Place (HK$ 184,600)

Level 16 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Devan Tang
Devan Tang

It sure was a hell of a comeback by Devan Tang today but the run has come to an end in 8th place for a payday of HK$ 184,600. Tang tangled with Scott Davies in two hands that saw his stack completely vanish towards the other side of the table.

In the first hand, Tang opened to 25,000 and was called by Davies on the button to see a heads-up flop of {J-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{3-Clubs}. Tang continued for 30,000 and was called before the {2-Clubs} turn slowed things down and saw two checks. The {4-Diamonds} river provided a bet of 50,000 by Tang and Davies called with the {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} to scoop the pot versus {K-Hearts}{J-Spades}.

One hand later, Tang opened to 25,000 again and Davies three-bet to 60,000. The initial raiser clicked it up to 170,000 with a total stack of around 430,000 and Davies now made a triangle to announce all in. The bet was called and it was a coin flip for the tournament life.

Tang: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Davies: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Once again the American and 2014 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific Main Event champion won a crucial flip on a board of {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{7-Spades} and jumped into the overall lead as first chips millionaire.

Alberto Gomez and Yung Bing Chu Eliminated in 9th Place

Level 15 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Yung Bing Chu
Yung Bing Chu

With two tables of five players each, there was an all in showdown at the exact same time and it reduced the field from 10 to its last eight hopefuls in a matter of one minute.

Yung Bing Chu got his stack of 230,000 chips in preflop with the {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and Sheng Sun looked him up with {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs} from one seat over. The big stack prevailed on a board of {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs} and they shook hands.

There is now a quick break to set up the final table and the level has 02:33 minutes left on blinds of 5,000-10,000 with a running ante of 1,000.
Over on table 21, Alberto Gomez open-shoved from the button for what looked like 180,000 and Scott Davies reshoved out of the small blind.

Davies: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Gomez: {A-Spades}{9-Clubs}

After the {4-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} turn, Davies asked for a six and sure enough the dealer burned and turned the {6-Clubs} river.

With both players hitting the rail simultaneously, it was decided that they evenly chop the 9th and 10th place payout for HK$129,245 each.

Percy Yung Bubbles the 50K Freezeout

Level 15 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Percy Yung
Percy Yung

The bubble burst on the short-handed table after Jack Hu raised and snap-called the all in of Percy Yung for around 13 big blinds. They had to wait until the other table finished their hand before proceeding with the showdown.

Yung: {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Hu: {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}

The {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop provided some chop outs, yet the {6-Hearts} turn changed nothing. It was the {5-Spades} river that let the bubble burst and get all remaining 10 players into the money.
