Day 1 action from the first annual PokerStars.net APPT Macau Asian Poker Open is in the books. The players are currently in the process of bagging up their chips and drawing their new seat assignments for tomorrow. Among some of the big names to fall on Day 1 were Chad Brown, John Juanda, Vanessa Rousso, Van Marcus, Jeff Lisandro, Tuan Lam and Monsour Matloubi.
Play will recommence tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 noon local time. Many top pros lived to play another day including former WSOP champs Joe Hachem and Scotty Nguyen and Team PokerStars pros Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, Bill Chen, Isabelle 'No Mercy' Mercier, Masa Kagawa and Hevad "Rain" Khan.
Tune in tomorrow for our continued coverage of the 2007 APPT Macau Main Event as we play down to a nine-handed final table.
Until then, from the Grand Waldo Hotel & Casino, good night and good luck!
Minutes before play was stopped for the evening, Tobias Schulze of Germany won a pot that - we think - catapulted him into the chip lead heading into Day 2.
An opponent moved all in from under the gun for approximately 20,000 in chips. Schulze made the call from the button holding pocket jacks; his opponent tabled .
The board filled out and Schulze's jacks held up, pushing him past the 200,000 threshold on the day.
The tournament staff has just asked anyone who is not a member of the media or a player in the event to exit the tournament area while we wrap up the last eight minutes of the day.
The play seems to have slowed down quite a bit this level, so let us take this time to remind you that play will restart tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 noon local time. The top 40 finishers will walk away with more money than they started with -- barring none of them dropped a load of cash on one of the many Baccarat tables placed strategically near the entrances and exits.
40th place will receive $3,238 in prize money and $222,640 has been reserved for first.
The players have returned from break and the cards are in the air. With one level of playing remaining this evening, there are 96 players remaining and the average chip stack is 36,666.
On the very last hand before the players broke for their break, Scotty Nguyen moved all in from the cutoff for a total of 9,200 holding . Action then folded around to the big blind, who took a second to consider is decision.
"I hope you have king-queen, baby," said Scotty to his lone opponent, who called and tabled none other than K-Q.
While Scotty's opponent had the cards he wanted him to have, the flop brought three cards he didn't care to see: . Scotty would now need to hit an ace or running straight or flush cards to stay alive. The turn cooperated, bringing the which kept Scotty's hopes alive... and when the fell on the river, the crowd that had surrounded his table let out a collective "Ohhh!" as Scotty had completed his runner-runner flush to stay alive.
After the hand, the Prince of Poker stacked up just over 20,000 in chips.
The tournament clock has been paused while the players take their last break of the evening. When they return, we'll play one more level before we retire for the night.
