Baby on Board

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Cecilia Doyle
Cecilia Doyle

We caught up with Rob Voigt recently, a recreational player who made a splash at last summer's World Series of Poker. Voigt didn't win a bracelet during poker's premier festival, but jewelry did play a major part in his story.

Voigt proposed to his fiancé Cecilia on the Rio's main stage, with a packed house of poker pros standing by as witnesses. The scene was a special one within the often gritty world of tournament poker, showing that there is always so much more to life than flops and folds.

Rob took a shot here on Day 1b, ultimately falling short just before the re-entry period concluded. His better half, however, has persevered despite riding a short stack for much of the day, and she is still in contention late in the evening.

What makes Cecilia's performance even more impressive is that she's not doing it alone: the couple recently found out that they are expecting their first child. About eight weeks along now, Cecilia has been coping with the usual symptoms all mothers have suffered through during pregnancy, but despite the occasional bout of nausea and fatigue, she has weathered the storm to build a respectable stack late in the day.

With a wedding date set for May 11th, and a baby on the way in about seven months, this poker pair is set to become three of a kind. And with a $1 million guaranteed prize pool up for grabs, both are hoping to make a life-changing score here at the Borgata Spring Poker Open.

Two Bullets from Romanowski

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

A player opened to 4,800 from under the gun, Bob Romanowski three-bet to 11,500 on the button, and the action folded back to the opener, who called.

The flop came {3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}, the opener checked, and Romanowski continued for 13,100. His opponent called.

The turn was the {j-Spades}, the player checked again, and Romanowski fired another 28,500. This time the player released his hand, and Romanowski pulled in the pot.

Baumstein Applying Pressure

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Professional poker player Scott Baumstein is applying the tools of his trade here as the evening winds down. With two players limping in the pot, he raised to 9300 from the button. The two limpers folded quickly and Scott rubbed a little salt in their wounds and showed {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. Baumstein, a sponsored PartyPoker pro, has over $1.2 million in reported live tournament winnings including a 2nd place finish for $209,480 at the 2012 Borgata Fall Poker Open Championship Event.

Joseph Mullins the Ladies Man

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

We saw Joseph Mullins celebrate with a fist pump after the river card was dealt, and after heading over to take a look, it turned out he had tripled up in a confrontation of pocket pairs.

The final board read {4-Spades}{2-Spades}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Mullins had the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} displayed in front of his 15,000 or so remaining chips.

The two other players in the pot held {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}, with the owner of the nines doubling through the player with snowmen. Mullins had them both beat though, and he now sits with just under 20 big blinds late on Day 1b.

Fireworks During the Break

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
James Woods
James Woods

As everyone was filing out of the room to take a break, a big hand was brewing on Table 1. When we arrived, there was about 15,000 in the middle on a flop of {8-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, and Sean Wallace had a bet of 12,000 in front of him. Anthony Conte moved all in for 57,000, and James Woods was in the tank.

"There's so much in the pot," Woods grumbled. "S***!"

He eventually cold-called, and Wallace folded.

Conte showed {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for a flopped set of sevens, and Woods wanted to muck.

"I can't win," he sighed, showing {10-Hearts}{2-Spades}.

Woods wasn't drawing dead though - running cards could give him a full house, or if the turn and river put a straight on board the duo would chop the pot - and the turn was a repeat ten; the {10-Clubs}. Conte filled up, making sevens full of tens, but any eight or deuce on the river would give Woods a superior full house.

The {9-Spades} on the river was a brick, however, and Conte shipped a massive pot. Woods fell to around 30,000 chips.

Tom Terrific

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

In one of the last hands before the recent break, Tom Dobrilovic scored a massive double up to give himself one of the bigger stacks in the room. Here's what went down:

A player in the cutoff opened for 7,300 and the action folded around to Dobrilovic, who three-bet jammed for 64,700. A third player put her last 5,200 at risk as well, and with the action back on him, the opener decided to call off the majority of his stack with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

Dobrilovic rolled over the {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} to find himself in a great spot with his overpair, while the short-stacked player held the {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs}.

Flop: {5-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Turn: {7-Diamonds}
River: {9-Clubs}

The final run out came clean for Dobrilovic's ladies, and he doubled through and then some to push over the 140,000-chip plateau.
