Event 1: Day 1A Comes to a Close, Torrey Korsog Claims Chip Lead

Robert "Uncle Krunk" Panitch is Among the Chip Leaders at the End of Day 1A

After 16 levels of play here at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Day 1A of the Winter Poker Open’s first event has come to a close. Event 1 here in Atlantic City is a $500 No-Limit Hold'em Re-Entry event, and with a guaranteed prize pool of $2 million, more than 1,000 players took their shots (and in the case of players who re-entered, quite a few shots) at a massive score.

A total of 1,212 entries were recorded on Day 1A, and tournament officials expect the house to be packed tomorrow, as Day 1B and Day 1C are played concurrently. Add in the recent conclusion of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, where many of poker’s brightest stars were in attendance, and tomorrow’s action should be thrilling from start to finish.

That was the case here today as well, with hundreds of local grinders, home game heroes and even online qualifiers flocking to the Borgata to try their hands. There were a few notable names in the house though, as defending WPT Winter Poker Open Main Event Champion Andy Hwang, actor and poker enthusiast James Woods, and tournament veteran Men “The Master” Nguyen all fell short.

At the end of the day, it was Torrey Korsog who emerged as the chip leader, as his 372,000 stack just nipped Johnson Nguyen and Roger Wellman, who each held 361,000 at day’s end. For the honor of claiming the chip lead, Korsog was awarded a cool $2,000 from the Borgata, while Nguyen and Wellmann split a $1,000 prize.

Korsog is an experienced tournament player, having taken down a $600 NLHE event at the 2013 Venetian DeepStack Extravaganza III. He earned $68,312 for that win, and with the most chips in the room here today, he is well on his way to another big cash.

The other big stacks include Randy Pfeifer (345,500), Robert “Uncle Krunk” Panitch (319,300), Erik Lefkowitz (297,200), Mike Ortiz (276,500) and John Fava (265,000).

A total of 201 runners survived the day, bagging and tagging to return on Day 2, but this event’s unique format allows any of these players to come back tomorrow and try to build a bigger stack. When Day 2 begins, the biggest stack an individual player has built is theirs to keep, so we expect to see a few familiar faces in the field tomorrow.

Check back in at 10 a.m. local time to follow all the action, as the game’s most feared professionals show up with fresh tans to take on New Jersey’s best. Day 1B and Day 1C will be played simultaneously, and tournament officials expect more than 2,000 players to show up, so the action will be fast and furious from the start. The PokerNews live reporting team will be here for the duration, bringing you all the bad beats and bustouts in real time, so check in early often to follow the progress here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open.

Event 1: Damon Ferrante the Heartbreaker

Damon Ferrante (Seen Here at a Previous Edition of the Borgata Winter Poker Open)
Damon Ferrante (Seen Here at a Previous Edition of the Borgata Winter Poker Open)

We heard a player yell out "Yes!" while shooting up from his chair, and after hustling over to take a look, we found Damon Ferrante excitedly comparing his stack to another.

The final board read {4-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and Ferrante's {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} gave him the immortal nuts with a heart flush. His downed opponent held the {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}, and after both players got it all-in before the flop, the worst hand vaulted into the lead with the jack on the flop.

A heart on the turn made things interesting, however, and another on the river compelled Ferrante to jump for joy.

After a bit of accounting, Ferrante's stack was deemed to be the larger of the two, and with that he sent a crestfallen opponent to the rail with a runner-runner tale to tell.

For a local player like Ferrante, who has seven cashes on his Hendon Mob résumé, all occuring in Atlantic City, New Jersey, today's Day 1A of the Borgata Winter Poker Open provides a chance to shine on his home turf. With his most recent win, Ferrante inched a little closer to adding an eighth Atlantic City cash to his career record.

Event 1: Men Nguyen Doesn't

Men "The Master" Nguyen Has Been Eliminated Here on Day 1A
Men "The Master" Nguyen Has Been Eliminated Here on Day 1A

Shortly after becoming crippled in an earlier hand, we watched Men "The Master" Nguyen make his stand with an all-in shove from early position.

With his last 5,600 in the middle and at risk, Nguyen watched as a player in the cutoff re-shoved for 35,500. When a second player opted to do the same, Nguyen knew he was in trouble, and when both opponent's tabled {A-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}, "The Master" found his {A-Spades}{10-Spades} to be far behind.

"I can't believe this..." Nguyen said as he saw the bad news. "They both have a real hand... always have a hand."

A final rollout of {j-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts} left all three players with ace-high, but the king kickers did the trick, sending Nguyen home in the latter stages of Day 1A.

Event 1: Hwang(ing) Out

Andy Hwang Has Exited the Tournament Floor Here on Day 1A

We missed his bustout hand, but the seat formerly occupied by Andy Hwang is now the home of another player.

With the re-entry period of Day 1A long since passed, this can only mean Hwang has been eliminated from contention.

We have no doubt that Hwang's name will appear in this space in the days to come however, as the winner of last year's WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event looks to defend his title in the days to come.

Event 1: Love (Res)Lockdown

Chris Reslock (Seen Here Displaying the Winning Hand After Recording His Record-Breaking 7th WSOP Circuit Win)
Chris Reslock (Seen Here Displaying the Winning Hand After Recording His Record-Breaking 7th WSOP Circuit Win)

Longtime tournament veteran and all-around consistent performer Chris Reslock has been spotted among the field, and the all-time leading winner of WSOP Circuit rings is quietly amassing a big stack midway through Day 1A.

Reslock, who has won an astounding seven Circuit rings since the series' inception, recently sent an opponent to the rail after his {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} connected on the river.

With the final board reading {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}, the {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} held by Reslock's short-stacked opponent proved to be no good. A third player called both Reslock and the opponent's all-in moves with {4-Spades}{5-Spades}, so the pot was essentially a triple up for one of the most decorated players in the room.

Event 1: Krunk Juice

Robert "Uncle Krunk" Panitch Here on Day 1A
Robert "Uncle Krunk" Panitch Here on Day 1A

With a nickname like "Uncle Krunk" one might expect Robert Panitch to be a young gun on the poker scene, but in fact, Panitch is a 62-year old grizzled vet on the tournament scene.

You may remember Panitch - or his unlikely moniker - from last year's ESPN broadcast of the WSOP Circuit National Championship, where "Uncle Krunk" finished in 3rd place and earned more than $150,000.

Panitch is in the house here today, competing on Day 1A of today's opening event at the Borgata Winter Poker Open. So far, "Uncle Krunk" has lived up to his nickname, and he has hung tough against players 40 years his junior.

Currently, Panitch sits with a comfortable stack of around 42,000, good for double what he started the day with.

Event 1: Men Mastered

Men "The Master" Nguyen Here on Day 1A
Men "The Master" Nguyen Here on Day 1A

The face of tournament veteran Men "The Master" Nguyen is familiar for tournament reporters and opponents alike, which is why eight of his nine opponents folded quickly on Nguyen's big blind.

Matt Shafman, on the other hand, decided to tame the beast, raising to 1,200 from the small blind. Nguyen peered down at Shafman's stack, and after assessing the possibilities, "The Master" made the call.

Flop: {Q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

Shafman led out with a bet of 1,600 and Nguyen quickly plunked a stack of orange T1000 chips forward to put his short-stacked opponent to the test. Just as quickly, Shafman made the call, and when he rolled over {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} it was clear why.

Nguyen, for his part, appeared to be quite surprised, showing Shafman his {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} and saying "Wow... I thought I had the best hand here!"

Needing to catch one of two remaining jacks to notch the knockout, Nguyen watched as the turn ({9-Hearts}) and river ({K-Hearts}) missed him entirely. Still smiling at his admitted misread, Nguyen cut off a stack from his own chip castle, and Shafman scored a well-timed double up through one of poker's original superstars.

Event 1: Hwang Rivered in Three-Way Pot

Andy Hwang, Winner of the 2013 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event, Here on Day 1A
Andy Hwang, Winner of the 2013 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event, Here on Day 1A

Four players, including Andy Hwang and a short stacked Eric Riley, committed 2,100 before the flop, which fell {K-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}.

All fur players checked around to bring the {9-Spades} to the table on the turn. Another check to Riley prompted an all-in shove of 2,400, and with the action back on him after another player flatted, Hwang took some tome to ponder his options.

Eventually, the winner of last year's WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open, opted to smooth call as well, and the fourth player then got out of the way.

On the {10-Spades} river, both Hwang and the other player involved tapped the table, with Hwang slowly revealing just the {9-Hearts} in hoped his pair was good. It was enough to force a muck from the unidentified player, but Riley triumphantly revealed his {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a better pair on the river.

Even with the hit, Hwang is still sitting comfortably with an above average chip stack, while Riley bought himself some much needed breathing room with the drop of a card.

Event 1: Letting it All Hwang Out

With many of the game's most recognizable faces still travelling back from the recently concluded PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, today's field is largely comprised of local grinders.

Fortunately, we were able to spot a familiar face among the masses, as Andy Hwang currently sits with a double stack just four levels into the day.

You may remember Hwang as the winner of last year's WPT Borgata Winter Open Main Event, as the young pro collected more than $730,000 for his 1st place finish.

Hwang is picking up right where he left off here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open, steadily amassing a big stack early on Day 1A of this $500+$60 re-entry event.

Event 1: Woods Fighting to Stay Afloat Early

James Woods
James Woods

We found well-known actor and poker enthusiast James Woods grinding away at Table 46, and he had just fired a bet of 1,300 into two opponents on a board of {4-Hearts}{2-Spades}{9-Spades}{k-Hearts}. Both players folded their hands without much thought.

"Did you have king-queen?" a player at the opposite end of the table asked.

"Yeah, I had king-queen," Woods responded, casually tossing {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} into the middle to show a set of deuces. "Good read, good read."

"Hey, sometimes I'm a little off," the prospective hand-reader said with a smile.

Woods looks to have run into a little bit of trouble early on despite the win, as he's well below the starting stack of 20,000.
