Day 1 Started

Welcome to the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open

Andy Hwang won last year's main event here at Borgata.
Andy Hwang won last year's main event here at Borgata.

The tournament director's voice is filling the venue here at Borgata in Atlantic City, N.J., and players line the back wall as they prepare to take their seats for Event 1 of the Borgata Winter Poker Open. PokerNews will be on location, bringing you live updates throughout the tournament series, which culminates with the $3,300 re-entry main event starting Jan. 26. Other highlights of the two-week-long series include a $1,500 Heads-Up event and a $1,000 Six-Max tournament.

Last year, Andy Hwang topped a final table that included former WPT champion Matt Salsberg to take home a $730,053 first-place prize in the main event.

The first event, which is set to begin just minutes from now, is a $500 re-entry tournament with a $2 million guaranteed prize pool, so over 4,000 entries are expected. Roughly 700 entrants are registered so far, according to a tournament official, who said he expects the field to top out around double that number today, the first of three heats.

The button will start in Seat Six, and the tournament director has just instructed dealers to begin the tournament. Players will begin with stacks of 20,000.

Event 1: Short Tables

As players continue to filter in, slowly filling out the tables one by one, many tables are being contested short-handed. Most tables seem to house about six runners, with some featuring three-handed battles for the currently-tiny blinds.

We witnessed the tail end of one of the first big pots of the tournament at a five-handed table in the middle of the room, when John Betancourt fired 6,300 from the button with the board reading {7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}{9-Hearts}. His opponent in the small blind called immediately, and Betancourt rolled over {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for two pair. His opponent mucked, and the Pittsburgh native has a leg up on the field early.

Event 1: Settling In Here on Day 1A

Players continue to trickle through the doors here at the Borgata, and the tournament floor is slowly filling to capacity. Already the sights and sounds of serious poker tournament are on display, as players engage in friendly banter, not-so-friendly needling and exhaustive reviews of yesterday's bad beats.

Even at this early juncture - less than an hour after the tournament began - short stacks can be seen shoving for their tournament lives, while smiling players sit and stack the spoils of conquest.

With another major tournament series concluding yesterday, most of the game's brightest stars are en route at the moment, 40,000 feet above it all. That means today's field is largely comprised of amateurs and semi-professionals, but we expect the tournament floor to be invaded by big name pros in the days to come. Of course, PokerNews will be on hand throughout the entire Winter Poker Open series, so stay tuned to find out which stars show up to shine.

Event 1: Online Qualifiers Take Their Seats on Day 1A

Nearly one year after Governor Chris Christie signed legislation to regulate and legalize online poker in New Jersey, the state’s premier gaming establishment – Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa – has capitalized on the momentum.

As the Borgata Winter Poker Open kicks off with Event 1: $500+$60 Big Stack NLHE Re-entry, dozens of players in attendance have the rebirth of online poker to thank for their tournament entry. With Borgata's affiliated gaming sites now operational, the casino has been running satellite tournaments to give online players an opportunity to jump into the live action, and so far several players have done just that.

Jermaine “Blue_Magic” Hampton hails from Voorhees, New Jersey, and after becoming interested in poker just before Black Friday, he was more than ready to mix it up on the virtual felt. Hampton entered a $91+$9 satellite event on BorgataPoker.com, and along with 49 other survivors, he emerged from the 184 player field to claim his entry to today’s opening event of the series. Hampton said he was “ecstatic” to have online poker back in his backyard, and he has a tremendous chance here today as he attempts to turn an online satellite entry into a major payday.

According to the Borgata's online poker consultant, the synergy between Borgata’s online poker room and its live tournament series is integral to the success of both venues. Players can compete online, cash in their winnings right at the casino’s cashier cage, and even parlay a deep run in a satellite event into an entry to the Winter Poker Open.

We will be sure to track the progress of online qualifiers like Hampton throughout the day here at PokerNews, so check back regularly to follow along.

Event 1: Blinds Up, Structure Notes

Blinds have already been raised to 50-100, as the relatively fast early structure of the tournament gets going. Levels will last just 30 minutes until Level 17, at which point they go for 40 minutes, then 50 minutes at level Level 21. Final table levels will be 60 minutes. We're scheduled to see 16 levels today, with a 60 minute dinner break.

An interesting wrinkle in the prize pool is payouts of $2,000 and $1,000 respectively for the top two stacks at the end of each of the three Day 1 heats.

Event 1: Koester Doubles Stack

We found a player being paid for a double-up by the dealer on a board of {3-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{q-}{9-}. Shaun Koester was the recipient of the chips, as he had flopped a wheel with {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}. His opponent muttered about giving a gift as the dealer swept up his chips.

"I shoulda taken a picture of that one," he added as the cards were jumbled, erasing all evidence of the hand.

Event 1: With Some Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti

Passing through the tournament floor during the initial stages of a large tournament like this can sometimes feel like déjà vu all over again, as players contest middling pots and the action remains inactive.

For John Fava, however, an opponent's impatience provided an early boost to his stack.

We heard a player offer a "nice job" in a resigned voice, and as he stood to depart the room it was clear his 20,000 starting stack had been claimed by another. In this case, it was Fava who did the deed, dispatching the fallen foe with {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} on the {a-}{7-}{3-}{a-}{5-} board.

Fava's opponent held the {4-}{5-} and after finding a double gutshot straight draw on the turn, he decided to make a play at the pot with a raise to 3,100 on the turn. Unfortunately for him, Fava held trip aces with a strong kicker, and he shoved all-in to defend his holding.

When the other player called off needing to spike a deuce or a six, Fava found himself in a great spot, and a brick on the river gave him a double stack to start the day.

"I appreciate the gift sir..." Fava said in response to his opponent's lukewarm congratulation, and with that one of the bigger stacks in the room has already emerged.
