Lex Veldhuis is in a little pain, not from the tournament as such, but because he apparently has several broken ribs from sparring with a martial arts trainer. Veldhuis and "Elky" are in an apparent fighting prop-bet for the summer but Veldhuis is concerned that he might have a lung infection and now cannot train for the next few weeks.
Just around that point, he then moved all-in on the river of a after Cristian Ranieri bet 8,000 on the river, getting the Italian to muck.
We should probably introduce you to Mr. Alessio Lamia, as he's the early and massive chip leader. We joined the pot a bit too late to tell exactly what resulted in the three-way all in, but we can venture a guess from the hands that were shown down. Here's what we gathered:
Lamia had been holding , and he was up against two opponents -- Mike Sowers' and an unknown player's . The flop of must have driven the heavy betting action, and Lamia's set somehow managed to hold up when the turn and river blanked off and respectively.
That huge pot pushes Alessio well over 80,000 and into a big early lead, sending Sowers home all too quickly.
Wandering over to James "Royal Flush" Dempsey's table, he was looking glum with what seemed to be a stack of only six or seven thousand (something that could easily happen in the first ten minutes to him) until he revealed he'd be given a 25,000 chip already.
Apparently with so many people, there is a chip shortage the like that only Yorkshiremen outside fish 'n' chip shops have seen. Because of this, instead of introducing the orange T25,000 chip on Day 3, they're having to use them from today.
We've got a pair of 2008 WSOP finalists with us today. Chino Rheem occupies the corner-most seat in the near room, just a few tables away from his old pal Kelly Kim.
In the middle of the three tournament rooms, the two dangerous Noah's -- Boeken and Schwartz -- will be battling each other as table mates for the bulk of the day.
At a nearby table, Team PokerStars Pro Nacho Barbero is here trying to add an EPT trophy to keep his LAPT trophy company on his mantle. He's got a tough seat, though, one to the right of the Russian terror that is Vitaly Lunkin.
EPT Champions? Sure. We already mentioned MacPhee and de Korver, but we've also spotted Carter Phillips (EPT Barcelona), Christophe Benzimra (EPT Warsaw), Sebastian Ruthenberg (EPT Barcelona), Jens Kylonnen (EPT Copenhagen), and of course, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (PCA).
A smattering of others:
Nabil Matta (2009 Lebanese Poker Champion)
Craig Bergeron
The Brothers Binger (Michael and Nick)
Dan Shak
Russel Carson (EPT Snowfest runner up)
Men Nguyen
Jon "FatalError" Aguiar
Ty Reiman (PCA runner up)
And Team PokerStars Pros Andre Akkari, Joep van den Bijgaart, Thierry van den Berg, Ruben Visser, Marcel Luske, and Ivan Demidov.
LOTS of people have. LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of them, filling three vast tournament rooms.
Among them, there are a few particularly interesting table shares.
Two of the most poker-playing Dutchies, EPT Grand Final winner Pieter de Korver and PokerStars Sports Star Fatima de Melo are sharing a table. Elsewhere their fellow countryman Thierry van den Berg is having to contend with behatted Frenchman Nicolas Levi and recent Irish Open winner James Mitchell - and there's still an empty seat at that table.
Across the way Benny "Emo Smiley" Spindler is sharing a table with EPT Berlin go-deeper Ketul Nathwani and UK poker legend James "Flushy" Dempsey. And elsewhere EPT Berlin champ and online sicko Kevin MacPhee must be delighted that he gets to spend all day looking at Liz Lieu.
... and not surprisingly. The room is packed with players, and they're still trickling in at a pretty good pace. It looks like they've actually just gone ahead and moved the start time to 12:15 p.m since there are still 10 minutes left on the countdown clock.
Sit tight, we'll be back in just a few minutes with the action.
