269 Runners... Probably

There were well over 270 runners registered at the start of the day, but not all of them actually made it as far as the tournament area. After playing the first couple levels with empty seats scattered around the room, five or six tables have now been broken and the official number on the board is 269.

Among those who were registered to play today but never made it were PokerStars Sports Star Boris Becker and Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Sandra Naujoks. We presume they will be playing tomorrow. Rather less fortunate is Dutch pro Jasper Wetemans. He was under the impression that he was registered for tomorrow, so spent this afternoon drinking instead. He discovered his mistake when some buddies called to see where he was. He's coming down now. With apparently seven beers inside of him. Good luck, Mr. Wetemans!

A Surprising Double Up for Mattern

Team PokerStars Pro Arnaud Mattern has been on the short stack, but recently doubled up and was "surprised" to do so, his word.

A player in early position min-raised to 400 and was called by hijack, cutoff, and button seat players. Mattern shipped it in from the big blind for 3,750 and his lone caller was the original min-raiser.

She tabled {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and was up against Mattern's {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. The flop came down an interesting {Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and kept things pretty even. The {J-Hearts} turn made a straight for Mattern and he dodged many outs on the river when the {2-Clubs} fell. Mattern, who had been getting a massage, got out of his chair to pay the masseuse and the dealer mistakenly thought that Mattern believed he had been eliminated.

"You won," said the dealer. Mattern replied, "Oh I know. It's very surprising. It happens once in a blue moon." He's still short, but at a more comfortable 9,000.

Sarwer Re-Claims His Losses from Stallinger

Jeff Sarwer
Jeff Sarwer
As always, we're keeping a keen eye on Jeff Sawer today, and his table has been an interesting one thus far. In the last couple orbits, we've seen Christian Stallinger three-bet Sarwer on several occasions. Sarwer has yielded each time, but we recently saw the two men tangle again.

A player under the gun opened to 600, and there was a smooth call right behind him. When it came to Sarwer, he bumped it up to 2,400 straight. Next door, Stallinger made the four-bet raise this time, sliding out 7,100 chips. That was enough to quickly fold the table back around to Sarwer.

He sat in the tank for a minute or two, sitting absolutely still. Finally, he put his hands behind his full stacks and slid them all across the line -- an all-in wager of about 46,000. Stallinger gave a long look at Sarwer before shaking his head and open-mucking {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}.

Sarwer nodded, and as the chips were pushed to him, he offered, "I can only have three hands there, right?" He's up to about 57,000 as he stacks that pot.

Downhill and Dale

It looked as though Matt Dale raised from the button and the gentleman in the big blind called; either way they saw a {5-Spades} {8-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} flop. Dale attempted to bet 650. "I haven't checked yet," complained his opponent. "Oh I'm sorry," said Dale, removing his earphones, "I thought it was on me. Does that mean I have to check?"

Mr. Big Blind checked and Dale (who did not have to check) bet his 650. Mr. Big Blind now raised, Dale called, and they progressed to the turn.

The turn was the {3-Clubs} and both players checked; come the {A-Spades} river Mr. Big Blind bet out 2,600. Dale tossed in the call - and then mucked when his opponent turned over {A-Hearts} {9-Diamonds}. Dale is down to 20,000.

Glo the Explorer

Since the action is a bit slow out there right now, we'll give you a way to spend the next two minutes of your day. Yesterday, Gloria went wandering around the valley, taking in the sights, the sounds, and the snow that the mountains nearby have on offer. Take a moment and let her welcome you to Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

Negreanu Sliding

The player under the gun opened to 800 and Daniel Negreanu popped it to 2,100 from middle position. Action folded around the to the raiser and he made the call.

The flop came down {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and the mystery player checked. Negreanu bet 2,600 and was called, leading to the {Q-Spades} turn. Both players checked and the {4-Clubs} hit the river. The mystery player fired 4,100 into the pot and Negreanu quickly mucked.

The opponent showed the {4-Spades} and Negreanu laughed. "That was good," he said. He was then showed the {K-Spades} by his opponent and nodded in approval.

Negreanu is down to 20,800.

Phew

It turns out that Jasper Wetemans, who had the fright of his life when mid-beer he was informed that he was already two hours late for the tournament, was actually registered for tomorrow and his presence on the Day 1a list was a mere clerical error.

After the Double, Mattern Does the Double Double

Back in the game
Back in the game
It looks as though Arnaud Mattern's plan to ditch this tournament and go snowboarding instead has gone awry - just minutes after doubling up as reported just a while ago, he did it again!

There were two limpers and Mattern, holding {A-?} {10-?} suited, made it 1,025. The big blind and one limper called, and they went three-way to the {Q-?} {10-?} rag flop. It checked around to Mattern who bet 1,800, and the big blind called. Both players checked the {K-?} on the turn and they saw another {10-?} on the river. Mattern shoved, his opponent called, and Mattern's trip tens were good to double him up to almost 15,000.

But wait!

Just a few minutes later, and Mattern doubled up again!

All in preflop for 14,950 with {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} against his opponent's {J-Clubs} {J-Spades}, Mattern spiked a king on the flop and is back up to his starting stack. Looks like the pistes are going to have to wait a while...
