As Per Usual

Per Ummer got rather lucky when he found himself holding {8-Spades}{9-Spades} against an all-in short stack's overcards (we think it was {a-}{j-}).

The board came down {6-}{q-}{5-}{5-}{7-} and the newly busted player banged the table as Ummer rivered a straight. The player (we think he was Italian, from the way the Italian media chased him as he busted) headed for the rail, and Ummer moved up to 170,000.

I am In-vinsonable!

Ben Vinson started with just a measly 18,000 today and earlier we reported how he had managed to double through Jeff Sarwer with {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} against {J-Spades} {J-Diamonds}. Well Vinson has just managed another double up, though this one is much more sizeable, he has just doubled to 340,000.

Vinson had got into a raising war on a flop of {7-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} with {K-Clubs} {K-Spades} against a speculative shove from his opponent's {A-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} simply needing to avoid an ace. The {Q-Hearts} turn and {J-Diamonds} river gave him the opportunity to do just that.

Affleck Almost Left In A Steicke Situation

David Steicke raised preflop to 6,600 and Matt Affleck made it 16,300 from the button and Steicke quickly called.

The flop came {K-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {J-Spades} and Steicke checked it across to Affleck who bet 18,000. Steicke tanked for about a minute before moving all-in and Affleck instantly called and turned over {A-Spades} {Q-Clubs} but Steicke also showed {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} which meant the latter was freerolling.

Steicke really liked the {J-Diamonds} turn which gave him a royal flush draw but the river was the {A-Clubs} and the two players were forced to chop up the blinds and antes.

That's How You Win a Poker Tournament

JP Kelly was in cutoff seat, and he opened the pot with a raise. After some fighting back and forth with big blind John Juanda, he ended up all in for 102,200 total. And the news was not good:

Kelly: {A-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}
Juanda: {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}

The flop came queen-high, rolling out {5-Hearts} {6-Spades} {Q-Clubs} to give Kelly at least a glimmer of hope.

Turn: {Q-Diamonds}

Bink!, as Greg Raymer says. Juanda didn't react -- he's seen this sort of thing a time or two before -- but he had to be stung by the two queens on board, leaving him drawing dead to the case ace. The river was the {J-Spades} though, and Kelly finds his unlikely double up. He's well over 200,000 now, while Juanda has been crushed all the way back down around 50,000.

Mitchell Out

Reigning Irish Open champion James Mitchell will not be adding a home turf EPT win to his tournament record this year - he has just busted.

We're not sure when the chips went in, but on the turn or river seems like a good guess, given the hands.

Mitchell: {a-}{5-}
Other gentleman, who shouted "YESSS!!!" very loudly, alerting us to the hand in progress: {8-}{5-}

Board: {6-}{3-}{2-}{4-}{7-}

Spindler It Up

We only caught the bit at the end where Benny Spindler turned his cards over to scoop the pot ("How many chips have you got there?" said Chino Rheem at the next table, "I want you to come over to my table with all those chips"), so once again thank you to our German media friends who taped the entire thing and played it back for us. Efficiency, eh?

There was a raise to 4,300 preflop which Spindler called on the button.

Flop: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}{4-Spades}

The original raiser bet out 8,000; Spindler flat-called.

Turn: {3-Hearts}

This time the raiser checked. Spindler bet 14,200, and the preflop raiser called.

River: {j-Clubs}

The original raiser checked again, and this time Spindler bet 59,200 (you can really zoom in on our German friend's camera). Original Raiser called, but mucked to Spindler's {q-Spades}{10-Spades} for the flopped nut flush.

Spindler seems to be our new chip leader after that, on 475,000.

Kelly Shoves Again

First in from the cutoff seat, Chance Kornuth opened to 6,200, and action folded around to the big blind. JP Kelly was in that seat, and he three-bet to 18,500 straight. When it came back to Kornuth, he reraised to 46,800, Kelly shoved for 186,500, and Kornuth double-checked his hole cards and quickly made the call.

Showdown
Kornuth: {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}
Kelly: {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds}

Let's flip a coin for more than 150 big blinds, shall we?

The flop was barren for the Team PokerStars Pro, coming out {Q-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {4-Hearts}, and the turn {Q-Spades} didn't help him either. The river {K-Clubs}, though, was quite the game changer. Kelly spikes his pair to lock up the pot, snagging more than half of Kornuth's chips in the process.

That pot would have put Kornuth awfully close to the half-million chip mark, but the king on the river means he'll cut out the losses and drop to about 160,000.

Kelly, on the other hand, has skyrocketed up the scoresheet to a very healthy 375,000 now.

Stealing a March-ese

Tom Marchese
Tom Marchese

Tom Marchese quietly slipped in a raise to 6,500 from the small blind and was pleased as punch when the big blind set him all-in for his 51,100 stack. Marchese quickly called with {10-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} against the big blind's {A-Hearts} {4-Clubs} and easily won after a {10-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {J-Spades} board offered, like a crap Haunted House ride, no scares at all.

Raymer Doubles Through Hachem

Greg Raymer
Greg Raymer

Greg Raymer (big blind) and Joe Hachem (button) saw a {10-}{8-}{8-} flop. All the chips went in, Raymer's tournament life on the line.

Raymer: {k-}{10-}
Hachem: {q-}{10-}

Turn: {k-}

River: {9-}

Raymer duly doubled up to 150,000. A very unhappy looking Hachem dropped to 140,000.

"I was sure we were going to catch a ten in there to chop it," chuckled Raymer jovially; Hachem said nothing. "Or an eight."

Perrins Has A Lot Of Heart

Matt Perrins pushed all-in for 94,500 on the river of a {4-Hearts} {4-Spades} {6-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {J-Spades} board against a Partouche-shirt wearing opponent. With the pot swelling over 100,000, his opponent tanked for a few minutes before finally calling.

Perrins flipped {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} for the nut flush which was more than good enough as his opponent simply mucked. The IPT Venice winner is now up to 265,000
