Trickett Emerges as Day 1b Chip Leader

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Sam Trickett

On Saturday, the 2012 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Sanremo Main Event continued with Day 1b action as 477 players packed the Casino Sanremo for eight 75-minute levels of play. By the end of that time, approximately 270 remained with Sam Trickett finishing as the chip leader.

Trickett got his stack of 178,000 thanks in large part to picking up aces when another big stack held kings; what’s more, the Brit won a big pot himself a short time later with kings. Trickett’s big stack surpassed that of Day 1a chip leader Erion Islamay (162,300), which makes him the overall chip leader headed into Day 2.

Combined with Day 1a’s 320 runners, the huge Day 1b turnout brought the total field size up to 797 players—which represented 52 countries—and created a prize pool of €3,865,450. That will be distributed to the top 120 players with €800,000 going to the eventual winner.

The day got off to a quick start with the first elimination coming just 11 minutes into play. It happened when Andrii Nadieliaiev and Andrey Zaichenko each put in 4,750 preflop and saw a flop of {K-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Zaichenko bet 5,000, Nadieliaiev called, and the dealer burned and turned the {2-Clubs}. Zaichenko bet again, this time 6,000, and again Nadieliaiev called. When the {4-Spades} peeled off on the river, Zaichenko moved all in for his last 14,300 and Nadieliaiev snap-called. Zaichenko revealed {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}, but it was no good against the {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} of Nadieliaiev. Interestingly, Day 1a's first elimination came from an aces-versus-kings hand, though those players got it all in preflop.

The Russian may have been the first, but he wasn’t the last. McLean Karr, Faraz Jaka, Davidi Kitai, Ben Hamnett, Antonio Esfandiari, John Duthie, Aku Joentausta, Tobias Reinkemeier, Toby Lewis, Ronny Kaiser, Jonthan Aguiar, Chance Kornuth and the defending champ, Andrey Pateychuk.

Likewise, Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Dario Minieri, Massimiliano Martinez, Richard Toth, Lex Veldhuis, Martin Staszko, Christophe De Meulder, Vanessa Rousso, Daniel Negreanu, Max Lykov, Alex Kravchenko, Martin Hruby and Sandra Naujoks all hit the rail throughout the day.

Some PokerStars Team Pros who will be returning on Day 2 are Chris Moneymaker, Pius Heinz, Andre Akkari, Angel Guillen, and Johnny Lodden, just to name a few. They’ll be joined by other recognizable names including Justin Bonomo, Chris Brammer, Shaun Deeb, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Isaac Haxton and Steve O’Dwyer. In addition, former EPT Sanremo champs Liv Boeree (Season 6) and Rupert Elder (Season 7) will both continue their quest for a second title.

Day 2 will commence at 1400 CET (0800 ET) and PokerNews will be right back on the floor providing all the live updates. Be sure to check back then for all the latest and greatest action from Sanremo.

What Does Pagano Think of Johnny Lodden's Nuts?

Luca Pagano
Luca Pagano

With about 15,000 in the pot and a board reading {10-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Spades}, Luca Pagano checked and watched Johnny Lodden bet 8,800. "How much do you have left," Pagano asked.

"18,00," came the reply. Pagano then put out a stack of blue T5,000 chips for a big check-raise. Lodden quickly committed and the cards were turned up.

Showdown
Lodden: {9-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Pagano: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Pagano had picked a bad spot as Lodden held the nuts. Pagano needed a seven on the river just to chop, but unfortunately for him, it wasn't in the cards and he watched a big portion of his stack shipped to Lodden.

Quads For Moneymaker

Chris Moneymaker

On a {5-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop, Ronny Kaiser led out for 3,500 and was Lucille Cailly called. Daniel Negreanu folded his hand and Chris Moneymaker decided to tag along to the next street as well.

The {7-Diamonds} rolled off on the turn and Kaiser checked. Cailly moved 6,900 into the middle and Moneymaker flat called. Kaiser folded and we were heads up to the {K-Diamonds} on the river.

Cailly slowed down with a check while Moneymaker moved out a sizable bet of 18,000. Cailly thought for about a minute before dropping in a call. Moneymaker rolled over {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} for quad fives. Cailly threw her hand at the muck and the 2003 WSOP champion was able to scoop up a huge pot. He's now sitting on a mountain of chips with about 80,000.

ElkY Exits

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier - Eliminated
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier - Eliminated

Action folded to Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier who raised to 400 from the hijack. Alfonso Donnarumma three-bet to 1,200 from the button and it folded back to ElkY who flat called.

The two saw a flop of {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Spades} fall and Grospellier led out for 1,775. Donnarumma quickly called and the {5-Clubs} paired the board on the turn. Grospellier kept up with aggression, pushing out a bet of 4,400. Donnarumma stuck around.

The {3-Hearts} fell on the river and turned out to be quite the action card. Grospellier bet 15,500. Donnarunna took one quick look back at his cards, heaved a breath and moved all of his chips in. ElkY shrugged and called, only to see Donnarumma turn over {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for a full house.

Grospellier let out a laugh and showed {A-Hearts}{k-Hearts} for a rivered flush. Grospellier shipped all of his stack over to Donnarumma and quickly got up from the table. Donnarumma is now sitting on about 68,000 in chips.
