Belov Pips Rodriguez to Lead EPT Prague Day 1b

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Vadim Belov
Vadim Belov

What a day that was! A total of 528 players packed onto 54 tables today to play Day 1b of the PokerStars.net EPT Prague Season 9. That meant a total of 864 players across the two flights, smashing the 722 players that entered last year. The prize pool was released late on and the top prize of a massive €835,000 easily surpasses the €720,000 paid to Martin Finger last season. This is now officially the richest tournament ever to be held in this country.

Leading the way at the end of play was Vadim Belov who pipped Luis Rodriguez to post after he bagged up 179,300 chips. For long periods we thought Luis Rodriguez was going to end the day as leader after he won a huge pot versus Makarios Avramidis in a aces versus kings confrontation. He dropped back to finish on 176,800.

The play was frantic from the off, with cooler hands popping up all over the room matching the temperature outside. Martin Hruby and Byron Kaverman were two players with high hopes for the tournament, but they busted in the same hand after both flopping sets on {9-}{10-}{j-} flop. Mikita Badziakouski was sat in wait with {k-}{q-} for a straight though and sent them both packing.

Those sort of hands continued throughout the day and we recommend you read back through today’s coverage to absorb what the players had to contend with and what we witnessed.

Team PokerStars Pro had 14 representatives in the field today but not all made it through the minefield. Dario Minieri, Dag Palovic, Max Martinez, Michael Keiner, Luca Pagano, and Salvatore Bonavena all joined Hruby on the rail. We will welcome back Alex Kravchenko, Juan Manuel Pastor, Christian de Leon, Ville Wahlbeck, Pier Paolo Fabretti, Johnny Lodden and Ana Marquez on Day 2 though.

Those having to contend with the bulging side events this week after busting included former champions Kevin MacPhee, Benny Spindler, David Vamplew, Michael Tureniec and Davidi Kitai along with Faraz Jaka, Max Silver, Lars Bonding, Elio Fox and Griffin Benger.

The remaining 462 players from both day 1a and 1b will return for day 2 tomorrow at 12:00 PM CET, where they’ll make steady progress towards the 128 players that’ll leave with a Prague scented Christmas present worth a minimum €8,000. Some eyes will be on the final table prizes (listed below) but that there in dangerous behavior.

Rodriguez Over 200K

Rodriguez wins a massive pot

Luis Rodriguez had a four-bet of 11,000 sitting in front of him when we reached Table 24, and Makarios Avramidis, the presumed three-bettor, called in position.

The flop fell {5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, and Rodriguez paused for a bit before tossing out 13,800.

"Call," Avramidis spat immediately.

The turn was the {9-Hearts}, and again Rodriguez sat quietly for 30 seconds or so. He then reached for chips, and pushed forward 23,100.

"Call," Avramidis repeated.

A third ten - the {10-Spades} - completed the board, and Rodriguez sat silently.

"All in," he said so quietly that only the dealer could hear him. She echoed the bet, and there was a short beat before Avramidis announced, "call," wagering the remainder of his 50,000-chip stack.

Rodriguez quickly turned over {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} for tens full of aces, and Avramidis showed {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for a lesser full house. After the stacks were quickly counted down, Avramidis exited the room, and Rodriguez pulled in a wave of multi-colored chips.

He now sits with over 200,000 chips.

Cochrane Eliminated; Zakharov Sitting On A Big Stack

Gavin "gavz101" Cochrane
Gavin "gavz101" Cochrane

You're more likely to find Gavin "gavz101" Cochrane on PokerStars' virtual felt than playing a live tournament, but the reverse was true today as Cochrane gave it a go in the EPT Prague Main Event. The high-stakes pro was doing quite well, having chipped up to 62,00, but that all came crashing down.

We're not sure how it happened, but Cochrane is among the latest casualties. Our best guess is that his chips were sent over to Russia's Alexey Zakharov, who was seated to Cochrane's left and now sits with a stack of 135,000.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Debabeche is also sitting on a nice stack of approximately 105,000.

Bonavena Looking For Another EPT Prague Title

Italy's Salvatore Bonavena won EPT5 Prague for €774,000.
Italy's Salvatore Bonavena won EPT5 Prague for €774,000.

Four years ago, a then little-known Italian by the name of Salvatore Bonavena made his presence known to the poker world when he topped a field of 569 players to win the second EPT Prague for €774,000.

Yesterday, Stephen Bartley took a look at Bonavena's career since his win in an interesting PokerStars Blog piece. Here's snippet of what he had to say:

It proved a breakthrough for Bonavena, who swapped modest scores in local tournaments in places like Sanremo and Venice, for the international stage. But more than that, as the first Italian to win a EPT title, it proved a watershed for Italian poker which embraced the game, and its winner, with typical aplomb.

Four years on and Bonavena is still a regular on the tour. Playing tomorrow, he was spotted earlier taking in the scene of his past triumph, to which he has since added the Sisal Italian Champions of Poker and IPT Venice to his resume, not to mention a third place in a WSOPE hold'em event earlier this year.

Bonavena is in today's field, as is Andrew Chen, who placed third back in Season 5.

Welcome to Day 1b of the 2012 PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Prague!

The Tournament Room
The Tournament Room

Season 9 of the 2012 PokerStars.net European Poker Tour continued yesterday with Day 1a action from the Prague €5,300 buy-in Main Event, which attracted 336 players. Today, a whole new set of players will pack the Hilton for Day 1b action, and expectations are high that last year’s record field of 722 entrants will be surpassed.

The EPT Prague has proven to be one of the most popular stops since its introduction to the schedule back in Season 4, which is when Arnaud Mattern defeated a field of 555 players to capture the title and €708,400 first-place prize. Mattern, along with EPT6 Prague winner Jan Skampa and the defending champ Martin Finger, were all in action on Day 1a, but only Finger would keep his tournament hopes alive.

Some other notables who were among the 180 players to advance yesterday were Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Richard Toth, Eugene Katchalov, Juha Helppi, Fabrice Soulier, Todd Terry, Eoghan O’Dea, and chip leader Iosif Beskrovnyy, who bagged 239,000 chips.

Who will join this impressive list of players in pursuit of an EPT title? Will a record-setting field create the largest prize pool in EPT Prague history? What time will Jason Mercier make it to the tournament floor after staying up all night playing open-face Chinese poker?

We’re expecting a massive turnout for Day 1b of the EPT9 Prague Main Event, which will include a laundry list of pros such as Johnny Lodden, Marc-Andre Ladouceur, Davidi Kitai, Ludovic Lacay, Andrew Chen, Bryn Kenney, Matt Waxman, David Vamplew, Grayson Ramage, Philipp Gruissem, Faraz Jaka, Ana Marquez and Ville Wahlbeck, just to name a few.
