77 Players Remaining

We've lost just 12 players in four hours, but it's starting to show. When the day first started, there were only two side games running. Currently, there are at least seven.

PokerNews has also spotted Annette "Annette_15" Obrestad scouting out the tournament area. The talented, young Norwegian is scheduled to play tomorrow, much to the dismay of . . . well . . . everyone else in the field.

Andy Black Doubles Up

Andy Black
Andy Black
Bad news for table three . . . Andy Black just doubled up. Here's how he did it:

Holding {Q-Spades}{9-Spades}, Black called an opponent's pre-flop raise and the two went heads-up to the flop, which came: {K-Spades}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, giving him a flush draw. His opponent led out for 1,500 and Andy called. The turn brought the {J-Hearts}, a good card for Andy as it gave him additional outs for a straight. His opponent then fired big, tossing 4,300 into the middle; again, Andy called. The river was absolute gin for Andy - the {10-Spades}, completing both of his draws. His opponent moved all in, and Andy called off the rest of his chips, which amounted to 11,500. Andy's flush was good and he is now sitting on approximately 35,000 in chips.

Seidel Doubles Up

Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel
A short-stacked Erik Seidel moved all in from the button for 3,225. He was called by a single opponent in the big blind. At the showdown, Seidel revealed pocket Queens and was in excellent shape against his opponent's K-10.

"How much does he have?" Seidel's opponent asked, seemingly ready to forfeit the hand before a single community card was dealt. "Let's not worry about that just yet," Seidel replied, speaking from experience.

The board was friendly to Seidel, as it came: {A-Hearts}{2-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts} and he doubled through to 6,525 in chips.

Scoreboard Update

There are currently 79 players remaining and the average chip stack is now 16,900.

The tournament staff has modified the official player tally for Day 1a from 91 to 89 to account for Steve Billirakis and last year's EPT Dublin champ Roland de Wolfe. Both players were scheduled to play today, but their chip stacks have been removed from play. Pending their arrival, both will join the Day 1b field instead.

...and the Poor Keep Getting Poorer.

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier has got his back against the wall, currently sitting with just 3,700 in chips after the following hand:

From under the gun, ElkY made it 450 to go and was called by the button. The flop came {K-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{5-Spades} and both players checked. The {Q-Hearts} fell on the turn and ElkY led out with a 700 chip bet; his opponent called.

The {J-Spades} fell on the river and ElkY checked to the button, who fired a 1,700 chip bet. ElkY quickly folded, leaving him even more short-stacked than before.

Dario Minieri Ousted

A short-stacked Dario Minieri moved all in over the top of Jan Sjavik's 400 chip pre-flop raise. Sjavik made the call and a third opponent who'd called the first raise folded.

Before the cards were turned up, Dario asked, "Have you got an ace?" "Yes," was Jan's reply as he turned over the {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. Dario, visibly disappointed, revealed the {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

The board filled out {Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades}, and on the turn Dario reached across the table and extended his hand to Sjavik before bidding adieu to his table.

Down But Not Out

Many of the high profile players in today's field have found themselves short-stacked midway through Day 1a. Currently, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Erik Seidel and Dario Minieri are all below 5,000 in chips.
