Andrew Chen Wins EPT London £10,300 High Roller Event for £394,200!

Level 27 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

Former European Poker Tour runner-up Andrew Chen battled back several times from a short stack to win the £10,300 High Roller event at the 2014 stop in London for £394,200. Chen, who finished second to Davidi Kitai at EPT Berlin back in 2012, secured victory after an incredibly brief heads-up battle against Lebanese player Fady Kamar.

Ten players had come back at the start of the day and it did not take long for lots of action to take place. Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden was first to be knocked out, pushing his last 11 big blinds into the middle with the {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, but running into Craig McCorkell's {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Lodden flopped a five, but the Englishman rivered a nine to leave the tournament with just a single table of nine players.

Niall Farrell had doubled up on the very last hand of Day 2, but he had still been one of the shorter stacks going into the final day. Farrell made a stand with jacks against start-of-the-day chip leader Leonid Markin. The Russian called with the {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and spiked an ace on the flop to increase his lead even further.

With the official final table now set, Salman Behbehani survived with two double ups in succession. First with aces against Markin's ace-king, then with two pair all in on the turn against Martin Quack's straight draw.

Jorryt van Hoof, the 2014 World Series of Poker November Nine chip leader, had started the day second in chips, but he went out in some very cold hands against the seemingly unbeatable Markin. Van Hoof flopped top set with the {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} on a {4-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} board, but Markin had the {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for the flopped nut straight. The Dutchman couldn't pair the board and went out in a surprising seventh place. Not that he was too concerned, because he immediately jumped into the £5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Turbo event and managed to make his second final table in the space of just a few hours.

At this point, Philippe D'Auteuil was the shortest stack, and he pushed with the {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Fady Kamar isolated with the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, and there was no king on the board nor enough hearts when it came {6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}. Kamar increased his stack while D'Auteuil was eliminated.

Andrew Chen, Salman Behbehani, and Martin Quack were all under 20 big blinds, and a crucial pot went the way of Chen when he raise-called for his entire stack against Quack. Chen showed a dominating {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} to Quack's {A-Spades}{2-Clubs} and neither player improved.

Quack was crippled, but managed two double ups before he eventually lost with the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts} to Kamar's {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} on a {9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} board. Salman Behbehani follwed the German out of the door in fifth place after getting unlucky. Behbehani shoved with the {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}, but Kamar's {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} spiked a jack on the turn to leave the tournament with just four.

At this point, first McCorkell then Kamar began to assert themselves as Markin suffered several beats. He was first crippled when Chen shoved with the nut flush draw against the Russian's top pair, and then Markin finished in fourth after pushing the {K-Spades}{3-Spades} into McCorkell's {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}.

Three-handed play saw McCorkell immediately double with tens against Chen's nines before the Canadian recevied his own double up in return with the {A-Clubs}{9-Spades} against McCorkell's {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. Following this, McCorkell pushed his last 22 big blinds in the middle with the {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}, but Chen called with the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} and held firm on an {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds} board.

The heads-up battle between Kamar and Chen saw Kamar start with a slight chip advantage. That was quickly wiped away in a cooler, though. Both players had two pair by the turn of a {Q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs} board but Chen's {Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts} was better than Kamar's {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} when all the chips went in. The {3-Hearts} on the river left Kamar with just two big blinds and he was knocked out the very next hand. Chen had the {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, once again with pocket eights, and this time he was against Kamar's {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Neither player hit on the {6-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} board, and that was enough to secure Chen the 2014 EPT London High Roller title.

Fady Kamar Eliminated In 2nd Place (£267,000)

Level 27 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Fady Kamar - 2nd Place
Fady Kamar - 2nd Place

Andrew Chen opened the action for 160,000 from the button and Fady Kamar three-bet to 260,000. Chen made the call.

The flop was {q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Kamar check-called a bet of 400,000 to see the turn card come the {7-Clubs}.

Kamar checked again and Chen announced a bet of 875,000 before sliding out the chips. Kamar check-raised all in and Chen quickly made the call.

Kamar had turned two pair with {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} but Chen had flopped the better two pair {q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}.

A river {3-Hearts} finished off the board and the dealer counted down the stacks to find Kamar was left with just two big blinds.

“Sick turn.” Chen remarked and there was no argument from Kamar.

Kamar was all in next hand and had found a decent {a-Clubs}{9-Spades} but Chen turned over {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. A final board of {6-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Chen said, “That’s one way to do it.” He was the champion and a quiet but dignified Kamar was left to reflect on a close finish.

Craig McCorkell open-shoved from the small blind and Andrew Chen checked his cards and then announced "Call".

McCorkell: {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}
Chen: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

The flop came {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and McCorkell needed a king or queen, the {10-Spades} came on the turn meaning any paint was a winner but the river was the {2-Diamonds} and Chen won the hand.

There was a countdown, McCorkell's shove was for 1,745,000 but Chen had over 1,900,000 and the Englishman went out in third place.

Level 26 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Craig McCorkell
Craig McCorkell

Just as some of the chips were being coloured up and the 100k black/red chip was being introduced, Craig McCorkell just played out one of the biggest pots of the tournament.

McCorkell opened to 125,000 preflop on the button and Chen made it 330,000 in the small blind. Fady Kamar got out of the way and McCorkell moved all in, Chen quickly called.

McCorkell: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Chen: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}

"Suits covered as well?" sighed Chen.

The board came {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{K-Spades}{5-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and McCorkell doubled up into the chip lead.

Level 25 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Leonid Markin - 4th Place
Leonid Markin - 4th Place

Andrew Chen opened for 100,000 and small blind Leonid Markin moved all in. Craig McCorkell in the big blind re-shoved and Chen got out of the way.

Markin showed {k-Spades}{3-Spades} and McCorkell the {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}.

The cards ran out {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. Markin couldn’t hit and after a tough couple of levels where nothing went right he was finally felted.

Salman Behbehani
Salman Behbehani

Salman Behbehani moved all in from second position for around 300,000 and it was passed to Fady Kamar in the big blind who tanked for a moment then made the call.

"Do you have ace-six?" asked Behbehani, quite specifically.

Kamar: {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Behbehani: {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The board came {3-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Kamar spiked a jack on the turn to knock out Behbehani in fifth place. The latter will receive £117,000 as compensation.

Fady Kamar opened to 65,000 preflop and it was passed around to Martin Quack who shoved for 425,000. Kamar got a count and then made the call.

Kamar: {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Quack: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

There was no help on the {9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{A-Spades} flop for Quack but the {A-Hearts} turn gave him two overs, a flush draw and a counterfeit pair draw to hit. Somehow he missed all of these on the {7-Diamonds} river and was knocked out in 6th place.

Andrew Chen open-shoved for 588,000 in second position. It was passed to Salman Behbehani in the big blind who checked his cards, gave Chen's stack a resigned look and then reluctantly made the call.

Behbehani: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Chen: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

The board came {3-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{J-Hearts} and Chen doubled up to leave Behbehani the second shortest stack remaining.

Philippe D'Auteuil was getting low on chips and when it folded to him he moved all in for 200,000. Fady Kamar asked for a count and raised to isolate. No one else wanted to get involved so it was cards on their backs time.

D'Auteuil {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts} Versus Kamar {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

A final board of {6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} saw Kamars hand hold up to bust D'Auteuil.

Jorryt van Hoof Eliminated In 8th Place (£49,400)

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Jorryt van Hoof
Jorryt van Hoof

Jorryt van Hoof opened the pot for 55,000 and Leonid Markin called from the small blind.

They saw a heads-up flop of {4-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Markin decided to lead for 60,000. Van Hoof pondered for a short while before splashing out a chunk of red T25000 chips for a big raise. Markin announced all in and van Hoof called instantly.

Van Hoof had flopped top set {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} but he was in for a nasty surprise as Markin tabled the {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} straight. The turn card {8-Diamonds} and river {k-Spades} couldn’t pair the board for the November Niner and his chips were pushed to Markin who hit the 3,000,000 mark.
