Maguire Doing Well

An under-the-gun player limped and Clay Maguire limped on the button. Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck checked in the big blind and the three players took a flop of {9-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {8-Spades}.

Action checked to Maguire and he bet 4,200. Only the under-the-gun player called.

The turn brought the {2-Clubs}. Maguire fired 11,400 after the player checked to him and would win the pot. He now has 185,000 chips and is seated to the immediate left of Steven Merrifield who has 193,000.

Riding the Roller Coaster with JC Alvarado

Team PokerStars' JC Alvarado
Team PokerStars' JC Alvarado
JC Alvarado raised to 3,400 from the cutoff and was called by the player in the big blind. The flop came down {J-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {2-Hearts} and action was checked by both players.

The turn brought the {A-Diamonds}. Alvarado fired 4,800 after his opponent checked. The player made the call and the {K-Hearts} was then placed on the river. The big blind checked and Alvarado fired 12,800. The big blind tanked, but eventually made the call. Alvarado tabled {Q-Hearts} {10-Spades} for a broadway straight and scooped the pot. He moved to 125,000 chips after that hand.

On the very next hand, Alvarado raised to 3,400. The next player to act reraised to 8,500. When action fell back on Alvarado, he moved all in and his opponent called.

Alvarado held {A-Hearts} {K-Spades} and his opponent {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {J-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {4-Spades} {6-Diamonds}, forcing Alvarado to send over 56,000 chips to his opponent. He's now back down to 69,000.

Merry Christmas in Movember

...and no, that's not a typo. We here in the PokerNews live reporting booth (all four of us) officially began recognizing the month formerly known as "November" by it's true name, 'Movember,' about three weeks ago.

In any case, over on Table 1, Steven Merrifield is continuing to add to his stack with the recent elimination of short-stack Michael Malone.

Malone opened shoved holding {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades} and was called by Merrifield who tabled a pocket pair of kings.

The board then filled out {8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{9-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Merrifield took down the pot with kings full, to move to 213,000 in chips.

Fernandez Finished

Leo Fernandez
Leo Fernandez
Short-stacked, Leo Fernandez moved all in holding a mere {Q-?} {9-?} and was given action by Ivan Freitez who looked him up with {K-?} {Q-?}.

No drama here, as Freitez spiked a king on the flop to end Fernandez's run.

"You could always make up something more exciting," joked Rory Graham, who had been sitting next to Fernandez all day.

"The hand that actually happened was pretty boring."

The tournament clock has been paused while the players go on their first 15-minute break of the day.

Williams Over the Century Mark

Dan Williams raised from the hijack seat to 3,200 and then Alexandre Gomes reraised from the cutoff to 8,500. Williams made the call and the two players took a flop of {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {J-Spades}.

Williams checked and Gomes fired 6,800. Williams made the call.

The turn brought the {4-Hearts} and both players checked. The river was the {5-Hearts} and Williams led with a bet of 12,300. Gomes took about a minute to fold, dropping to 23,000 chips. Williams is now over the century mark, sitting on about 103,000 chips.
